It was another amazing read with wonderful characters. Rhys and Dallas were a wonderful couple with great chemistry. Rhys set out to kill a witch and avenge his sister. What he hadn't planned on was falling for a witch along the way. This captivating story pulled me in and kept me riveted until the end. I can't wait to read the next book in this amazing series. |

I received a copy of the book to review from Netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity. A fast paced action packed roller-coaster of a book. The ideas are fascinating and I would love to learn more about this world. A sweet romance adds to the appeal of this story, between the 2 engaging MCs. At times, the storyline was a bit tropey but it didn't interfere with the story so it was OK. |
What imagination!!!! I read Katie Rues all the time, and every genre that she writes is just pure reading pleasure. This new series of hers is even more entertaining and her imagination of a paranormal world along with humans and a plot that is interesting as well only adds more spice to her books. Another great read, and readers who love paranormal are in for a treat! |

I loved it! Rhys & Dallas are wonderful, but Willow won my heart. She is adorable & I hope she makes appearances throughout the series. Rhys & Dallas’ chemistry and banter cracked me up. I found them both endearing and exciting. As usual the suspense was filled with twists and turns & the romance with lots of steam. I cannot wait for the next book! |
If you like the first one, you for sure are going to love the second because who can resist a baby dragonling named Willow? Well, Rhys can't ;) ** I did start reading Ancient Enemy right after I've finished book 1 and I was really looking forward to see how the story progresses. And even though in the beginning I was missing Star, some of her crew and Lachlan, I have to admit that Rhys and Dallas, but especially Willow made up for it. As in book 1 the story progresses and there is still a lot of work to do after The Fall. I love how the author kept the story going. And yes, you can read it as stand-alone, but if you've read book 1, don't worry, there are not too many repetitions of the past. All good :) What I did really enjoy is that we also still get to read King's and Aurora's story. Not sure if they will get an own book and to be honest I wouldn't mind if they don't because I really do enjoy those chapters with different people and pov. I just hope that book 3 continues with this. Speaking of which, you already get to meet the next "couple" and oh, this is going to be interesting :D Can't wait. So for all you shifters, witches, magic-lovers out there, go and meet Rhys, Dallas and their Willow.
Ancient Enemy is the second book in the Ancients Rising series. Katie Reus does a great job of pulling the reader into the supernatural world filled with shifters, witches and vampires. Loved the chemistry between Rhys and Dallas and it was great to see all the characters from the first book. Lots of action and intrigue made this book a page turner. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. |

Amazing new story from Katie Reus, lot's of action, romance, humour and interaction between the characters. Good storyline and interesting characters make this another success for this author. Rhys cares only for revenge. Dallas has lived with hate all her life. As they collide Reus creates a humorous, sexy, charismatic story that will draw you in and wish you were part of the world. I highly recommend this book. |
Ancient Enemy by Katie Reus is book Two in the Ancients Rising Series. This is the story of Dallas and Rhys. I have read the previous book, so that did add to my enjoyment of this one. I do think you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so. Dallas is a witch who is used to having people hate her just because she is a witch. Rhys's is a dragon shifter who went into hibernation after his sister was killed by a witch. So when he awakes he of course wishes to seek revenge for her death. Rhys ends up meeting Dallas and he tries to hate her for being a witch but he can't stop his feelings of being protective of her and of course wanting more from her. I really enjoy Ms. Reus's writing and I do recommend her books and of course this series. |
Rhys has awoken after 1000 years of hibernation seeking revenge on the witch who killed his sister all those years ago. Rhys meets Dallas and is instantly attracted to her but can’t get past his hatred for witches (Dallas is a witch). They team up and look for the witch who is causing a lot of trouble in New Orleans. Rhys fights himself over his increasing protective instincts towards Dallas and her being a witch. He comes to the realisation that he shouldn’t judge all witches based on one’s behaviour. this is an enemy to lovers / fated mates story which I totally loved. I was in all the way. If you are looking for a sexy Scottish (grumpy) dragon hero, some sassy lions, alpha wolves and feisty tigers this is the book for you. 3 THINGS I LOVED: 1. DRAGONS and a sexy Scottish man? HELLO! This grumpy hero is a delight to read and ultimately a cinnamon roll. 2. The primal need to love and care for Dallas that Rhys can not deny is lovely to see, I love his inner dragon dialogue. 3. WILLOW!!! OMG Willow is so gosh darn cute. Imagine a toddler dragon who just wants to play and learn and please you. So so cute. 👌🏻 3 THINGS I DIDN’T LOVE: 1. I realise they are “mates” but they were continually referred to as “his mate or her mate”. It just got a bit annoying after a while. 2. There isn’t one 3. There still isn’t one. OVERALL THOUGHTS I enjoyed the inner conflict Rhys had trusting Dallas and how he could see that not everyone is the same. I think this was a fantastic book and was glad to pick it up. I think I liked the first book better but this one was still up there. I’m very glad I received this book (& book 1) on Netgalley, otherwise, I don’t think I would have picked them up. I can not wait for the 3rd instalment. I have since purchased my own copy of this book. 🐲 |
Rhys, an Ancient dragon shifter who has been awake and living in the U.S. for about a year, is hunting the witch who murdered his sister hundreds of years ago. He finds help from the most unlikely ally, Dallas, a witch with an affinity for nature. Dallas is used to being considered a pariah in the supernatural world, so she keeps mostly to herself, farming the land and raising her newly adopted pet dragon, Willow. She agrees to help King and Rhys find suitable land for farming and gardens, helping humans and supernaturals with food supplies. Ancient Enemy is the second title in Ms. Reus’s series about dragon shifters and the rebuilding of New Orleans after the Fall, when supernaturals were forced out into the open and millions of people died. It is a standalone romance, and can be read without knowledge of the previous book; however, there are crossover characters, themes, and world-building that was established in the first book. I enjoyed Dallas’s character a lot. Her pet dragon Willow is simply adorable. As a witch, Dallas grew up knowing hatred for what she is, but she’s made a home for herself, and she’s learning that she does have friends. King respects her and her talents, bringing her into the fold of his “inner circle.” I enjoyed watching Dallas grow to accept herself and being part of a team. I like that when Rhys immediately feels a connection with Dallas, he doesn’t hold the fact she’s a witch against her, and instead, opens up to her suggestions and kindness. He confides in her right away, asking for her help (and she offers) to find the witch who killed his sister. That said, and although the pair goes on to work together, professing feelings and exploring intimacy, they continue to hide truths from one another. They build their relationship on half-truths, which frustrated me. It doesn’t prevent their HEA, but I found the constant “but she couldn’t tell him the whole truth” vibe wore on me after a while. Ancient Enemy is another good story in the Ancients Rising series. I like the world, but I think I’m tiring of the fated mates, PNR genre. I would get lost in the story and then something would always pull me out. And I still struggle with the fact that we don’t see the human side of things - how they just let the “big bad scary” take over and run the world. Maybe it’s the current state of the world, but I can’t imagine humans going into the quiet so easily. Rating: B- Liked It -- But I had a few small issues |
Sorry for the late review. my phone was broken and it is hard to type using the laptop due to internal struggles Anyway, book two of Ms. Reus new series. I must say, it is getting better and better, Each book has its own twist, and waiting for every shoe to drop is making me crave this series more. King's book? that is what I am looking forward to. I was so sad to hear what happened to Rhys' sister, and he had to suffer so much guilt with it. However, this book was sooo good that the pairing was not something I expected from the author. I await the other books in this series... Will Cody be next? or someone from Star's group? Can't wait to find out! |
Loved it! Another fabulous read by Ms. Reus. In this story we have Rhys, Lachlan's brother, from the previous book , who falls in love with a witch. In Rhy's mind all witches are bad and he is currently hunting down the very witch, who killed his sister, thousands of years ago. Dallas is a good witch, an earth witch, and Rhys realizes he may have made a mistake in grouping that all witches are bad. In this book we are met with past characters, a look into who's book might be next, and King and Aurora' s future relationship. They are friends for now, but how long will it last? Can't wait for that one. Oh! Arthur and Prima, those two need to just mate already, lol. The best part of this book is Willow, the beautiful dragon, who belongs to Dallas. I fell in love with her, lol. Great story and an awesome read. 4.5 stars***** ****I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book provided by NetGalley***** |
Action packed, sexy, fun and heart racing adventure filled with dangerous charters, heart breaking secrets, emotionally thrilling twists and undeniable passion. Was a great read that was so hard to put down. |
A well paced, compelling read! Ancient Enemy is the second book in the Ancients Rising series. Vengeance, love and betrayal, the character interaction was engaging and the storyline dynamic. I will be recommending this one and looking to read more |
With a hot broody dragon on a quest for revenge, a sweet but surprisingly badass little witch with secrets, and the most adorable baby dragon, Ancient Enemy was just a huge helping of amazeballs topped with awesome sauce. Dallas and Rhys were everything I’d hoped they’d be. I felt for Rhys and his struggle between being drawn to Dallas and fulfilling his need to take out the evil witch. Dallas definitely had the Mary Sue thing going on which is usually a huge no for me, but there was so much more to her than all that sweetness, I didn’t care. Together these two were dynamite and when they finally combusted, it was freaking awesome. But as badass and amazing as they were, it’s Willow who stole the show. Everyone needs their own little baby wild dragon. And if that was enough awesomeness, when you add in all the cameos from some of my favorite couples from the Darkness series, I found myself having all kinds of fun in my paranormal happy place. And believe you me, I did not want to leave it when I read that last sentence. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series! Rating: 5 Dragons Have All The Fun Stars |
3.75⭐️ Katie Reus’s books are reliably steamy & entertaining & I really like this paranormal world she’s created. The latest release Ancient Enemy is an enemies to lovers (at least on one side), fated mates romance & this was me reading it 👀. Rhys, a dragon shifter, has come out of a long hibernation determined to avenge his sister’s brutal murder. He blames all witches for what his sister’s murderer did & he’s immediately suspicious of witch Dallas Kinley, the woman he’s been temporarily assigned as bodyguard to as she creates gardens around the city. But working with her can indirectly help him get his vengeance, if only his attraction for her doesn’t get in the way. I love how imaginative this book is, how strong the chemistry between leads is, how Reus portrays Rhys’s discrimination toward witches, his growing awareness of it, & how he comes to see how wrong he's been. One of the last scenes is really heartwarming because of the trust he shows & you can see he’s done the work. In terms of structure, I get that this book is likely setting up future books but some of the interludes aren’t clearly connected, & I was struck by the sense that some of the language used felt repetitive at times. Overall this is an engaging read & I’m really excited to see where the series goes next! Thanks to the publisher & Netgalley for my complimentary ARC. All opinions provided are my own. |
These books are great! While it's wonderful to see all the worlds connecting, you can certainly dive right in wherever you want. There is a bit of building toward King's inevitable mating, but other than that, they'd probably read great as standalone novels. We head back to New Orleans, this time with a witch and a real dragon (a really young real dragon) in tow. Oh, and we join the mystery missing dragon shifter from the first book, Rhys, too! Dallas (the witch) is just trying to live her life, take care of her pet dragon (not Rhys), and grow pretty things. Sure, she's powerful, but she just wants to do good and possibly balance the scales against some bad folks from her old coven (cough*secrets*cough). Rhys, however, is on a nonstop path to vengeance. A witch murdered his sister a really long time ago and he is out for blood! This somehow magically (haha) resolves itself quickly. Rhys falls for Dallas, who teaches him that witches aren't evil. There's evil happening in the city, which pretty much puts out the bat signal (or equivalent) for all the supernatural powerhouses. Together, there's really no stopping them. Oh, and romance! There's always time for that, right? I was glad we didn't have to mess around with your formulaic misunderstanding/martyr storyline. This was a refreshing change and left me wishing for more books in this series. |
Dallas and Rhys' story has all the feels a reader would expect from a Katie Reus book. Dallas is a witch that is tasked by King with producing food to help in the rebuilding of New Orleans. She also has the cutest young pet dragon named Willow, that is so precocious that you can't help but fall in love with her. Rhys, a dragon shifter, has awakened, and has only one agenda, to find and kill the witch that murdered his sister. He is also been tasked by King to protect Dallas from harm. Her being a witch is unknown to Rhys, and Dallas does not enlighten him due to his hatred of witches. The page turning action and secrets help drive this story with romance and drama for Rhys and Dallas as they find their HEA along with Willow. **I was gifted "Ancient Enemy" via NetGalley and leave my review based on my reading** 5 Stars! |

5 Stars Intense, powerful and sweet! Rhys and Dallas will have you on the edge of your seat! A dragon shifter, determined to avenge the death of his sister, crosses paths with a woman he cannot resist, but Dallas has secrets of her own. A witch, living peacefully in New Orleans, Dallas and Rhys are paired up to help King find the murderers of vampires and humans in the city. All of the suspense in this story is mixed with sweetness courtesy of not only our main characters’ budding relationships, but also Dallas’s adorable pet dragonling, Willow. You will fall in love with Rhys and Dallas, as well as supernaturals we have met already in the series. Another phenomenal book in the Ancients Rising series that will be sure to make your heart race! Cara - Alphas Do It Better Book Blog |

4.5 stars-- ANCIENT ENEMY is the second instalment in Katie Reus’ contemporary, adult ANCIENTS RISING erotic, paranormal romance series. This is ancient dragon shifter Rhys of the Donnachaidh clan in Scotland, and witch Dallas Kinley’s story line. ANCIENTS RISING is a spin off from the author’s DARKNESS but you do not have to have read the original series to follow the current time line. Told from several third person perspectives including Rhys and Dallas ANCIENT ENEMY follows in the aftermath of The Fall in which a group of dragons made an attempt to destroy the world but in doing so revealed the existence of the supernatural to humankind. Following a thousand years in hibernation, ancient dragon shifter awakens and goes in search of the witch who killed his sister thousands of years earlier only to discover his attraction to a woman who should be his mortal enemy. Enter powerful with Dallas Kinley, and the woman with whom Rhys will fall in love. When a number of vampires and humans go missing, Dallas and Rhys go in search of the truth only to discover the truth hits too close to home. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Dallas and Rhys, and the potential fall-out as the witch Rhys seeks continues to wreak havoc on the world of the paranormal. The relationship between Rhy and Dallas is one of immediate attraction but Dallas has no idea that Rhys’ dragon has found his mate. Unable to stay away, Rhys becomes guardian and protector of the witch he has sworn to hate, a witch whose own past is has been marred by dark power and hate. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text. There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and supernatural secondary and supporting characters including New Orlean’s alpha wolf King, and the phoenix Aurora; wolf Darius, snow leopard Bella, lion shifter Axel, tiger Harlow, Lola, and tiger Brielle; half demon Cynara; Rhys’ brothers Lachlan (and Star) and Cody, and of course Dallas’ ‘pet’ Willow. ANCIENT ENEMY is a story of betrayal and vengeance; power and control; family, friendships, relationships and love. The fast paced premise is energetic and entertaining; the characters are dynamic and powerful; the romance is sexy and sweet. ANCIENT ENEMY is a wonderfully, exciting story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
