The art is good, the story is interesting, but I'd like to know more about the characters. I will be reading the second volume to hopefully find out more about the racers and whatever life choices brought them to this contest. |

3 Stars ( I received an e-arc from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review) This was an interesting read, the premise is intriguing but some of the characters got on my nerves (like the spoiled rich woman who has her own driver). The art style wasn’t really something that grabbed my attention and was kind of messy/loose. My favourite aspect of the story is where the riders go in the race and how there is a check point where they can rest while waiting for the next leg. I still am curious to see how the race will play out so I may pick up the next volume when it comes out. |
I don’t read a lot of comics/graphic novels however when I sweep the words race through time of course I’m interested. How could anyone say no to such a premise? It was definitely interesting looking for to volume 2. |

Very entertaining read; It starts out with loads of question marks, urging you to read on, and then the story explodes and you. just. can't. stop. reading. Rough artwork, but it fits with the story. I appreciated the non-english conversations, but for the German part, a new editor is needed. Several misspellings, and odd sentence construction. |

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to e-read this in advance. This book presents a very unique storyline. It feels like an early 2000s action movie in all the right ways. It definitely has some Fast and Furious vibes. I read this in the span of 2 days. It is a nice short read, although I do wish we were able to experience and see a little more on the backstory of the characters. I also found it difficult to keep up with the characters since there are so many. I read this as an e-book but I imagine reading the physical book would be a much better experience. The illustrations are very well thought out and drawn. I enjoyed that the cover art, character art and unofficial soundtrack included at the end of the book. |
The fast/furious mix with mad max was really cool! I found myself enjoying the book and beginning to understand the characters. The idea of time travel was a bit confusing and I would like to see this more fleshed out in future volumes, but it definitely caught my eye and my interest! Thanks to Netgalley for this book! |

Super interesting concept but needs a bit more fleshing out! Couldn’t put it down once I started but I want more from it. Will probably read the next one to see if it develops further. |

I saw this comic compared to Mad Max and the Fast and the Furious and I totally agree I love the fast-paced action and not knowing what was coming next in the stories. The characters were unique and fun to learn more about I am looking forward to future comics to see them develop and learn more about their backstories. I loved the concept of time travel in it but I wished the mechanics of it were discussed more, this may be elaborated on in further volumes though. The art style took a little while to grow on me but by the end of the volume, I was loving all the detail and the colours. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this comic and am so excited for further volumes to see the story progress! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to enjoy this comic early! https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3569709333 |
So I started this thinking that I’d read this for a few minutes before switching to something else, but I couldn’t stop once I started. This was really exciting and I was seriously into the plot of racing to erase a mistake you made in the past. These characters are desperate and crazy and so interesting. Reading this was literally like watching a car accident unfold in front of me and I couldn’t look away. The cover art is phenomenal, which is why I think I was a little disappointed with the art in the comic itself. It wasn’t terrible by any means, but the cover looks sooooo great that I was expecting a little more as I was reading it. But that didn’t stop me from absolutely inhaling this one. The action is nonstop and Levy is a great main character. I couldn’t wait to see where they ended up next. And I cannot wait to continue the story! I hope it won’t be long before Volume 2 is released!!! This one is easy to recommend, but watch out, it’s serious, violent, and any humor is shrouded in darkness. Which I personally loved!! Thanks so much to NetGalley and Oni Press for allowing me to read this for my honest and unbiased opinion. Amazon review pending publication. |
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this book in return for an honest review. The art is really good and the colours are beautiful and vibrant which compliments the story a lot. This is an action packed graphic novel about a bunch of people who are brought together to take part in a huge, bizarre race. The race is very life or death and people have seemed to only be in the race so they can get a personal grand prize. The story does focus more on Alyson and her backstory which is interesting and slightly vague, which is probably in order to give the readers more in future volumes. It was pretty good and a nice, short read. Rating: 3⭐ Would I Read It Again? No, but I would read future volumes Would I Recommend it? Yes, especially to those who like action-packed graphic novels |
I. Want. Volume. Two!!!!!! The graphics. The coloring and shading. The story-line. Phenomenal! Anyone out there in graphic novel land looking for an action packed science fiction./fantasy thrill ride, check this out ASAP! Thanks to NetGalley, Oni Press, and Brian Joines for an ARC in return for an honest review. |
Fast cars! Female protagonist! Time travel! One of the above would have probably been enough to grab my attention but all three guaranteed I was going to pick this up. Alyson Levy is invited to take part in a race, point A to point B, for which the winner gets the chance to go back in time and correct a mistake they’ve made. The problem is that there are checkpoints between point A and point B, and the segment of the race between each is in a different point in time. The action kicks off from the get go, there’s no filler or waiting around for something to happen. Levy’s backstory and her motivation for taking part are told in snippets through flashback so the current storyline is never far from the page. The art is great and the covers are amazing! I love the fact that the artist and creator included a playlist for volume 1, a great little extra. The only minor complaint is that I sometimes found it difficult to differentiate between some of the characters and it could be confusing in the race scenes to follow who was in which car and therefore who was where. This is an entertaining collection of a comic with striking art and a fun premise. I’ll be looking out for the next volume. |
I loved this so much!!! This is such a unique, fun comic! It's got a totally original premise and a pulpy vibe that I just adored. It manages to really balance the excitement of the adventure with a more serious tone when things go south. Every issue brought new twists and surprises. I just couldn't get enough. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series as it come out! |
Creative, fun, action-packed. It's a coming book about a race happening throughout time. A group of misfits and degenerates is thrown into different important events in history in order to win the prize: the opportunity to change something in their past. It was honestly unlike any other comic book I have read recently. It was crazy but not too crazy, it was easy to follow and the characters were a group of diverse personalities and all had their own motivations. Their backstories and the secrets they hide slowly unfold throughout the story to present a more complete picture. Even though the graphic novel included some deeper moments, like the characters considering helping people they knew were bound to die in a catastrophe, it was generally very light and reminded me of an action film. Of course it was much more creative and interesting than an actual movie. The comic book followed the same logic an action film normally would. Unfortunately it also included some not-so-smart tropes also often present in popular movies (like portraying a Stasi officer very much like an SS officer). I'm looking forward to reading the next volumes. |
Interesting characters and interesting premise. The artwork was amazing and the plot was compelling enough that I didn't want to stop reading. |

BACKTRACK VOL 1: Second chances. We all want that. But our actions, consequences, regrets add pain to our lives, as a result, we live with it. As a part of our lives, that pain becomes elemental to what we are, what we do, and who we are. Why would we want to alter it? What if we could change it? This story brings that want to realization. Given a chance to alter some event in her life, the main character feels she must take it. To confront risks known and unknown as possibilities, should she? What does she have to lose? What is there to gain? The story is compelling. The characters living the story are complex. You will want to read what happens next. #BacktrackVol1 #NetGalley |
Interesting premise about a car race that goes through multiple timelines. Reminds me a bit of the Great Race cartoons that used to run on Saturdays when I was a kid, or something out of a Cannonball Run movie. There's a variety of characters, each with their own secret. The winner has been promised the chance to go back in time and fix their greatest mistake, so at first, it's dog-eat-dog. But fairly soon, the survivors realize they're going to have to work together to get through some of the bigger challenges. Nice, fast-paced story with art that really suits the tone of things well. This might make for a good television series. I could use a bit more depth and maybe there's more coming, as peoples' backstories get filled-in, etc. But I've certainly read worse comics. |
Thank you to *I received an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.* Very interesting plot. I really enjoyed seeing the different time periods and the specific dangerous that each one brought. The maine character, Alyson, definitely gives off some Jessica Jones vibes. I want to read the next volume for sure. |
Like lots of comic ideas, take a bit from column a and a bit of column b and smush it all together to get yourself a premise. Here - what if Death Race 2000 but travelling in time. So here we are with our lead character, Alyson, a getaway driver with serious regrets offer a chance to wipe out that moment. The hint that time travel is involved comes there, but certainly when the race starts and suddenly they are careening across the jurassic period being chased by dinosaurs. This is not a book where innovation comes in the plotting. As they speed through the Roman empire, or East Berlin in the seventies, writer Brian Joines is happy to tick a lot of genre boxes (each deadly leg kills off at least one racer, the personalities of which are one dimensional to a fault). But using genre saviness to speed the story on is not necessarily a bad thing. Each of the episodes has a flashback to try and explain Alyson's motivation, even though the minute we are aware of a brother and a job gone wrong its pretty obvious. On the other hand the choices of epoch to race through are a little less obvious. Dinosaurs fine, but China before and earthquake and the East Berlin capper is inspired. Elphick's art is extremely kinetic which is what you want if you are trying to draw this much racing, though the difficulty of showing the key moves often boxes him into a corner (there are only so many times he can plausibly show a car soaring through the air to emphasise speed). The character work is good too broadly, there is a very impressionistic line style for facial expressions and he is lucky that drawing Alyson being grumpy and moody comes to him so easily, If it were a movie though it would be a midnight schlocky guilty pleasure - there aren't many depths here and the last minute reveal (this is halfway through the book) whilst not foreshadowed, comes straight from the textbook of what to do when everyone starts trusting each other. I am assuming it will be wrapped up in one more volume, and I am looking forward to seeing how we get to the finish line without at any second believing the identity of the winner of the race will surprise me at all... This was definitely a great read for me! Gorgeous artwork, an interesting story and a great collection of characters. The comic throws you straight into the action and then (heh) backtracks to provide your with the reasoning. I will say the pacing is a little fast at times to get used to who is called what at first but you pick it up easily and don’t waste time with characters you don’t need to know about. Great story telling and a comic to keep at eye on! |
