This book was so good! Creepy and twisty and I will never ever date again! lol. Good writing and not so good characters, which is how I like it! |
Hannah, age 36, is a social worker who grew up in foster care. After a two-year relationship with Tom who simply moved into her flat and led his own life, she finally booted him out. Now, she is being encouraged by her friend, Jas, to get on a dating site and try her luck. Nervous about doing that, she finally clicks on a man named Alex, who is a solicitor. He gets in touch with her and they arrange to meet at a wine bar for a date. They are both pleasantly surprised that they have so many things in common and have a wonderful evening together. Wondering if he will call her again, he finally does after a few days and they go out again. Now they are together every night and she finds herself staying in his lovely and pristine house. But Jas is not sure about him and feels that he might be too good to be true. While he is loving and generous, he’s also borderline possessive. This distrust becomes hard on their friendship and working relationship as Jas is her boss. Some strange things start to happen and Hannah is convinced that Tom is getting back at her for breaking up with him all of which he denies. Is Alex as perfect as he seems? Is there truly reason for doubt about the man he claims to be? In my opinion, Hannah is a twit. While she appears to sincerely care about her teenage cases she works with, her inability to stand up for herself is pathetic. In addition, her drinking is insane. The plot is good but Alex had me questioning him all the way to the end of the book. Ah, but never fear, the author has a big surprise for us that no one is expecting. Never underestimate author Sue Watson because her books are never cut and dried. Expect the unexpected. Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. |

This book is an absolute rollercoaster of a book! Right from the first page it had me totally gripped. Obviously I knew from the blurb that Alex wasn’t going to be quite the dream date that Hannah thought he was, but it didn’t stop me feeling like wishing that I could just climb into the book and warn her to steer clear! The tension is almost unbearable in this book, I really couldn’t put it down. It’s got a fast pace, and a really well layered plot. I had no idea of how it was all going to end. When the book reached the end, I have to admit that I was a bit surprised, it wasn’t quite as dramatic as it was building up to be. But then, more fool me, along comes a jaw-dropping twist. A superb ending to a superb book. If you like psychological thrillers that are all-consuming and gripping, you will love this. |

I liked the idea of this novel. Lonely, hard-working social worker Hannah tries internet dating and meets her perfect man who turns out not to be so perfect I was irritated with the character of Hannah and her colleagues, tighter writing would have made it a better thriller. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the w c. |
This is an author I enjoy reading and so I was thrilled to be given the chance to read this book via Netgalley. From the very beginning I was caught up in the unfolding love life of Hannah and her dreams to find The One. She is at times annoyingly naive to the point of wanting to scream at her to open her eyes to what First Date Alex is up to. And yet even when I felt things were predictable, that Alex was insanely jealous, pretty crazy, hiding darker secrets and a master manipulator, I too had suspicious thoughts about someone else in Hannah's life, namely boss and fellow social worker Jas. Hannah is obsessed with finding her forever home and perfect life and you can hardly blame her given the start in life she had. A mother who died of an overdose and a childhood spent in one foster home, then another and then another. Desperate to help and make a difference in the lives of troubled young people Hannah is not only caught up in her intense relationship with Alex but she is keen to solve Chloe's problems. The teenager has a mother who is a drug addict and when Chloe suggests she is having a sexual relationship with an older man, Hannah is rightly concerned and suspects the mother's boyfriend. Yet what Hannah cannot see is how similar Chloe's choices are to her own. I was going to award the book 4 stars for being gripping and a well told psychological thriller but given the remarkable turn of events in the very latter stages I have to award this book 5 stars. I thought I had guessed the ending but was genuinely shocked and taken aback by the explosive ending which was jaw dropping enough. Please then enter the final big bang with a terrific cliffhanger in the last paragraph. Makes you wonder just what lengths people can go to if they decide you are The One! |
Thanks to NetGalley, publisher and author for allowing me to read for free this fantastic book. I loved this story from beginning to end. It kept me interested, it was full of great and unexpected twists and the ending was super shocking. I love the author's narration style. I hope the author had as much fun writing this story as I had reading it. The only downside is, having to wait for her next book! |

Hannah is ready to tip her toe into the water again after another disastrous relationship. She meets the gorgeous and wealthy Alex through a dating app and cannot believe how much they have in common, they appreciate the same music, food and holiday destinations. Best of all, he also wants kids and a dog. Before long she is head over heels in love and ready to move in with him, even though her friends are telling her to not rush into things. Does Hannah really know Alex? Why is he always turning up when she is out with her friends? Is he controlling or just wanting to take care of her? I really enjoyed this story and practically read it in one sitting. Although I found Hannah quite gullible, I loved how she also stuck up for herself. Sue Watson, I am in awe of how I had to re-think the whole book after that ending! |
The first few chapters plodded along — I thought I was not going to continue reading — but then it picks up speed and the characters are developed. Lots of background info is dished out, which seemed thick to get through, but once the foundation was layer the book took off. I enjoyed the pacing of the book and the constant mystery and wondering. There weren’t slow parts (other than the beginning) and it was easy and fun to read. I wanted to keep reading and was invested in finding out the “who” and “why”. |

This is my first book by Sue Watson. Now I want to read all of her psychological thrillers. The story starts like any romantic novel: girl meets boy, there's chemistry, girl has had bad experiences so she's very vigilant. But this one is spooky because boy seems way too perfect and boy may not be who we think he is. This tension kept me reading. Who is Alex? Is he evil? What is actually going on here? The end was completely unexpected. I recommend this book to fans of romantic novels with a dark twist. With thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for the digital ARC. |
This was a deliciously dark, creepy book with so much going on, in a good way. Hannah ends a relationship that is going with nowhere after two years, and turns to online dating and her best friend and boss, Jas encourages her. She meets the handsome Alex and they immediately click. Hannah and Alex agree they were meant to be... Seems too good to be true? You will meet other characters in this book that make you question everything just like Hannah. The other scary thing about this book is that is so believable! To think this happens in the dating world is scary AF. And the ending... OMG!!! I did not see that coming, at all! So happy this was not predictable. One of the best suspense thriller books I have read all year and highly recommended. 5 stars for sure!! Thanks to Netgalley, Sue Watson and Boookouture for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. After a bit of a shaky start, this book develops into something utterly compelling. Overwritten in some parts, could do with some editing - but the ending makes up for it. Brilliant. |
Book Description: She’s been waiting her whole life to meet a man like Alex. But he’s been waiting too. And once he has her, he’ll never let her go… Hannah has done everything to make sure her life is safe and secure. A long way from her unstable childhood growing up in foster care, she’s content with her sweet, little, messy apartment and her satisfying job as a social worker. She quietly worries that, aged 36, she might never fall in love. But otherwise her life is where she wants it to be. Until, encouraged by her best friend to join a dating app, she meets Alex. He’s irresistibly handsome. He loves the same music as her. The same food as well. They both dream of travelling the world but agree they’d be equally happy escaping to a cottage by the beach in Devon. Both of them would love to own a Labrador one day. It’s like he’s made for her. It’s like he’s too good to be true. Hannah’s friends aren’t so sure about him. But Hannah thinks he’s perfect. Which is good. Because Alex knows she’s perfect for him too. In fact, she’s exactly the girl he’s been looking for… And nothing Hannah’s done to make her life safe will ever be enough. A gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller about dark obsession and internet dating. Fans of The Wife Between Us, Friend Request and Gone Girl will adore this unputdownable twisted love story. BLOG TOUR REVIEW Review for 'First Date' by Sue Watson. Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous Publication date 16th October 2020 This is the first book that I have read by this author. It most definitely will not be my last!! I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful and colourful cover and intriguing sounding blurb. The write up also stated that 'fans of Gone Girl will adore this unputdownable twisted love story' . I am a big fan of 'Gone Girl' so I am interested to see if this book lives up to it's standard. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book). This novel consists of 40 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case! This book is set in the Midlands, UK 🇬🇧. I always seem to get on with books that are set in the UK better as I am from Wales and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book. I have in fact visited the Midlands several times so hopefully it will make it easier to picture the settings. This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Hannah. I enjoy books written in first person as it gives you more of a feel for the character and it feels like you are bonding over a cup of tea. Well, well, well Wow!!! What an absolute cracker of a book!!! This book sucked me straight in from beginning to the explosive ending. It was very well written with excellent descriptions which put me straight into the storyline. The blog and the cover suited the book perfectly. The storyline was fast paced and filled with drama and suspense. A very believable storyline which kept me on edge throughout. I loved all the twists and turns and throughout it kept me guessing what was going on and who was doing what. I would NEVER have guessed at the ending so a MASSIVE WELL DONE to Sue Watson. I have read many thrillers and it's getting harder and harder for me to be surprised so great job there. I loved the storyline and just loved everything about it. It was all done perfectly!! THE characters were fantastic, solid and completely believable, or are they?? You just have no idea who to trust and wow was I blindsighted!! Even reading the revealing chapter I still wasn't sure who it was that was speaking. They all had such different and strong personalities and all suited the storyline perfectly. Overall a compelling, page turning, mind blowing psychological thriller that will keep you up late at night. Genres covered include Mystery and Psychological Thriller I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of good books and also fans of Carol Wyer and CL Taylor. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review. I've struggle with this book in many ways, both positive and negative. The main character is quite a.... if you know what I mean lol but the ending.... made me think about it for days, so you decide if it's worth it |
This was such a page-turner! Sue Watson is new to me and I will definitely be reading more from her. The twists were great and I didn't predict it at all. I definitely recommend this one! |
A thrilling read! Gets 5 stars from me. I didnt see it coming yet again! Great twists and very good ending. A gripping who dunnit. |
Just when you think you know what’s going on, there’s a twist at the end. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 star rating from me. Thank you Bookouture, Sue Watson, and Netgalley for this book in exchange for an honest review. |
Favorite Quotes: ‘I thought we were getting somewhere, until he sent me his photo,’ she says. ‘Oh, not a pretty face?’ I ask. ‘I don’t know, didn’t see his face.’ ‘Oh gross.’ My Review: I am a bit concerned about the British system as this office was staffed with social workers that were so poorly trained they should petition their universities for a refund on their educations. I waffled over how to rate this book, but as the writer kept me reading and second and third guessing and shrewdly included several unpredictable twists and curveballs near the end that livened up the tale, I felt generous. The storylines progressed slowly with questionable characters and red herrings tucked in all the way through. I seriously wanted to give the main protagonist several swats to the head to hopefully wake up or jar loose a few working brain cells, but alas, it would have been a waste of my energy as she was truly entrenched and a lost cause. |
Hannah has been single for a year after she left her boyfriend, who then went on a little stalking rampage after they broke up. Her friend decided it was time she needed to start dating again and signed her up on a dating website. Lucky her she hit gold on the first match she made and her friend quickly encourages her to go on a date! The first date is a match made in heaven! Hannah and Alex have so much in common it’s unreal, almost to good to be true! Hannah being the good natured person she is, has already fell in love and know they are perfect together. Alex is truly a prince and spoils Hannah, but when weird things start happening to Hannah again, her friends begin to wonder if Alex is truly the Prince Hannah takes him for or if this is too good to be true? My take: This was a cute, fast easy read. When something is too good to be true, it usually is! There is twist at the end you won’t see coming so stay tuned! Thank you for allowing me to review this book, for my honest feedback @netgalley @bookoutre. |
Sometimes I don’t read the back of the book when I start reading because I want to discover the plot on my own. When I picked up this book and read the first few chapters I thought this book was about a girls experiences with first dates. The cover shows her glass of wine with a few spills.....duh that’s blood! I loved this book and once I figured out this was a thriller I was hunkered down and addicted. It’s been a long time that I’ve read a book that kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when you think the shoe will drop the author slowly draws out the scene so deliciously. Perfection Hannah was finally moving on from her ex and ready to start dating again. Her ex Tom had been a terrible boyfriend and turned into a crazy stalker after the two broke up. With the encouragement of her best friend and coworkers Hannah decided to get back out there and find someone new. By a stroke of luck her very first connection was with a sexy man she met on a dating site. Alex was not only handsome but they both wanted the same amount of kids, the same kind of dog, wanted to vacation to the same town. He was charming and funny and caring, and Hannah just knew right away Alex could be her forever. Of course her friends were very concerned and told Hannah she was moving too fast. What she perceived as caring they saw as controlling. Everything seemed perfect. He was a lawyer with an amazing home, nice car, very clean and an amazing chef. Hannah wanted to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming! Little things started happening that caused Hannah to pause and wonder if she was moving too fast. Alex seemed to appear wherever Hannah was even when she asked him not to. He could be a little too much at times but when Hannah tried to back away he swooped in and convinced her to come right back to him. Little by little Hannah will find out the truth and realize that man on her first date is not who he says he was. Can she get away from him alive? |
I really enjoyed this novel. I did find it to be longer than it needed to be. There were lots of twists and turns. Throughout the novel I didn't know who to trust. Do i trust Hannah or is she being naive? Is alex as psycho as he seems and what was up with Jazz? Sue Watson did a great job of charaterization. The ending was totally unpredictale and completely caught me offguard. |
