I thought the first half of this book is intriguing, particularly the question mark about the husband, Sam. He's hiding secrets from his wife but he might not be the only one with a secret. I liked the arrays of different characters in the therapy sessions and I was looking forward to figuring out who they are. I wasn't entirely surprised by the narrator switcheroo reveal but it's done well. It made me reconsider the previous conversations so that was fun to read!

However, the second half is a huge letdown. It basically follows the plot of a certain Stephen King novel and not as a creative homage either but pretty much a replica. The plotting derails off track and the characters behave in ways that don't make sense. The characters mentioned in the first half of the book disappear and there's no suspense in the missing person case because the reader is fully aware of the fate of the character. There's a major storyline about money as a source of conflict but it's explained away in a sentence in the epilogue which made me feel cheated. This could have gone so many ways from the promising start and the addictive writing, but it fails to stick to the landing.

Wow. What a rollercoaster. As soon as I started reading I was hooked, I loved how it was written and the different points of view. It was fast paced and so much was happening and moments I was so shocked I couldn’t put it down. I really like Annie and Sam but it took a good few chapters to warm to them.

At one point I did get abit lost, and I wasn’t as hooked as I was before but it did soon pick up and I was hooked again. 😂

Such a good, fast paced read and I’d definitely recommend it!

Goodnight Beautiful by Aimee Molloy. Wow, this book is so deserving of all the five star reviews!!

Drop dead gorgeous newlywed and therapist Sam Statler goes missing. His wife Annie is out of her mind with worry and is clueless as to what happened. The couple had moved from New York to upstate Chestnut Hill where Sam grew up, mainly to be closer to his mother who is in a nursing home. When they arrived, he opened up his new practice where his clients were mainly female and Annie worried that even though Sam was besotted with her that his head would be turned.

The author takes the reader on a roller coaster ride with red herrings galore and a lot of thrills and spills to be had! Highly recommend this book. Five stars!!

At first I was really into this book. The twists and turns are surprising. I like the narrative style and multiple points of view. Halfway through I felt less interested in how the story was developing. The tension weakened and it somehow became a little too familiar. Still enjoyed reading.

There's something about Aimee Molloy's writing that pulls me in. Her debut novel The Perfect Mother is about a subject that does not appeal to me in the slightest. Yet, I found the story to be incredibly enjoyable, though not thrilling enough to label it a thriller.

I did really feel the thrill in her latest novel. Again, there are elements to this book that don't appeal to me. I don't like the main character for example, because I don't like protagonists who lie and deceive. However, overall this book is a wild ride with so many real surprises, it's crazy.

Goodnight Beautiful is about newlyweds Sam and Annie who move from the big city to Sam's old hometown in upstate New York. Sam is a therapist. What he doesn't know is that his conversations with clients can be heard from the room above. This is all fine, until a French girl shows up in his office and Sam disappears.

As I said, there are so many elements that surprised me in this novel. They're not necessarily shockers, but some of them are. Molloy seems to understand where the readers' minds are going and she tries her best to put us off track every now and then. I like that.

There are time I dislike what is happening or how it is happening, but it takes a good writer to still give me the feeling of a thrill when events are unfolding.

I can't wait to see what novel Molloy comes up with next, because I'm here for it.

Just as good as I had hoped.
Such an intriguing read, and I do love an unreliable narrator!
The twist I read last night made me squeal, so loud my fiance's friends heard it over his headset!
So clever and gripping, I couldn't put it down!
The characters were so well defined and I was constantly trying to figure out the ending, but I never imagined the outcome!
Fantastic!
Thank NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC to review.

This was a fabulously fast and fun thriller that I picked up late this afternoon and found impossible to put down. It's best if you don't read too much beforehand and just go in without any preconceived notions as to what this is really about.

Dr. Sam Statler, a psychologist, is newly married to Annie Potter when they leave New York City to move to Chestnut Hill where Sam grew up. His mother is in a nursing home and they want to be close to her as her dementia has worsened. Sam creates a lovely office in the downstairs area of the mansion and soon starts treating patients. He does not know, however, that there is a vent that transmits his patient sessions to a room upstairs where every word can be heard. Of course it's impossible not to listen in to all the juicy details. Everything is going along great until the day that Sam goes missing. NO SPOILERS.

I really loved the twists and turns this novel took and the narrative style. It's unusual for books like this to surprise me, so imagine my delight when it did. This is excellent psychological drama and domestic suspense and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characterization was well done and the deft plotting kept me guessing as I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see how everything turned out. Great writing and this is an author whose work I look forward to reading again.

Thank you to Hodder and Stoughton for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.

Hmmmm.

This is a toughie to rate! It's also quite hard to talk about sans spoilers...so beware for any hint of spoiler.

The first part is BRILLIANT, 5 stars...ends with a twist that got me (especially when I had listened to some of the book via audio). The second part very good but with a couple of slightly guessable twists/turns that could take you by surprise if you weren't looking at things differently but also will make you kick yourself for not thinking so. It's unsettling and uncomfortable to read but that's all a part of the atmosphere Molloy

Then part 3....after the meta in story of analysis of thrillers this falls flat. I was expecting subversion of tropes or a commentary on the inspiration of this part, just something more than what we got. The antagonist does things and acts certain ways that...do not make sense given the context of why they are doing what they are doing, and it's very hard to ignore that. But is it really fair to blame the book for not doing something it didn't say it was going to do? There were still problems with it even ignoring the expectations I put on it (but these expectations were just given the context of the earlier parts of the book...).

Overall, I did enjoy myself and the characters/atmosphere were brilliant and the plot was also good, Solidly a 7/10 - so 3.5 and decided to round up because why not.....

Goodnight, beautiful was a brilliant, brilliant book. Sam and Annie haven’t been married long when Sam goes missing, has Sam moved on or is there something more to the story?

I read this book in one day, I could not put it down, it took me by surprise a good few times and I was rooting for the characters so hard! I can’t recommend Goodnight, beautiful enough!

This was, without a doubt, one of the most gripping psychological thrillers I have read. There were so many twists and turns that I literally couldn’t put it down and was finished in one sitting.

The story is centered around Sam and his wife Annie, who have recently relocated to Sam’s hometown in upstate New York in search of a quieter pace of life and to be closer to Sam’s dementia suffering mother.

Sam quickly settles into his new practice and works on building up new clients, unbeknown to him that someone is eavesdropping on his private therapy sessions.

When Sam doesn’t return home from work the whole town comes out in force to search for him. At this point the writing changes gear, leaving the reader desperate to uncover the truth behind his disappearance.
I highly recommend this title to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers – it’s certainly up there in my
top ten.
Many thanks to Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for the review copy.

This is a very interesting book, and hard to review without spoilers, so I will avoid getting into the plot.

Fans of Aimee Molloy will be familiar with the twists and turns in her novels, but this was completely new to me: I had never heard of her and all the reviews I saw kept saying "Don't read reviews and go straight into it". Which I guess is a kind of spoiler, because you're expecting lots of twists along the way.

And still... I had to re-read a specific chapter (and thought about re-starting the book) thinking that I was misinterpreting everything. After the first 2 plot twists, though, I saw the rest of the story developing and wasn't surprised by the others anymore, which I'm not claiming is bad. The issue (for me, and it's not really that big of a deal) was that I wanted to keep being surprised and rethinking everything, and at that point there wasn't much more to rethink. My expectations for the rest of the book were very very high, and I was a bit disappointed that I had gotten it right.

This is my first book from Aimee Molloy, and I will definitely be picking up her debut 'The perfect mother' soon.

I would have given 3.5 stars, but decided to round it down to 3.

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book kept my attention throughout and was intriguing but there were no stakes, the mystery wasn’t impressive, not a lot of tension and the end was just plain disappointing. A rip off of Misery.

Such an interesting and unexpected story!
I was intrigued by so many reviews and I finally found the time to read it.
I must admit that I’ve read it in one sitting because it kept my interest from the first chapter and wanted to know what’s going to happen with the newlyweds and what life’s going to bring in for them.
I loved the medical research and how the author has included it here, so many psychological aspects and I wanted to know more why Sam was acting like that and what actually happened with his mother. I loved her letters . There were a few things that didn’t work for me as in why Annie didn’t do more to look him up but that hasn’t stopped me from enjoying the story overall.
And that ending was very unexpected, to be honest.
I can easily see why it’s a must read story and I highly recommend it.

EXCERPT: October 20

I look up as a man with ruddy cheeks walks into the restaurant, shaking rain from his baseball cap. 'Hey, sweetheart,' he calls to the pink-haired girl mixing drinks behind the bar. 'Any chance you can hang this in the window?'

'Sure thing,' she says, nodding toward the piece of paper in his hand. 'Another fundraiser for the fire department?'

'No, someone's gone missing,' he says.

'Missing? What happened to her?'

'Not her. Him.'

'Him? Well that's not something you hear every day.'

'Disappeared the night of the storm. Trying to get the word out.'

The door closes behind him as she walks to the end of the bar and picks up the flyer, reading aloud to the woman eating lunch at the corner seat. 'Dr. Sam Statler, a local therapist, is six foot one, with black hair and green eyes. He's believed to be driving a 2019 Lexus RX350.' Whistling, she holds up the piece of paper. 'Whoever he's gone missing with is a lucky lady.' I steal a glance at Sam's photograph - those eyes, that dimple, the word MISSING in seventy-two-point font above his head.

'I saw the story in the paper this morning,' the woman at the bar says. 'He went to work and never came home. His wife reported him missing.'

The pink-haired girl goes to the window. 'Wife, huh? Sure hope she has a good alibi. You know the old saying: 'When a man goes missing, it's always the wife.' '

ABOUT 'GOODNIGHT BEAUTIFUL': Newlyweds Sam Statler and Annie Potter are head over heels, and excited to say good-bye to New York and start a life together in Sam's sleepy hometown in upstate New York. Or, it turns out, a life where Annie spends most of her time alone while Sam, her therapist husband, works long hours in his downstairs office, tending to the egos of his (mostly female) clientele.

Little does Sam know that through a vent in his ceiling, every word of his sessions can be heard from the room upstairs. The pharmacist's wife, contemplating a divorce. The well-known painter whose boyfriend doesn’t satisfy her in bed. Who could resist listening? Everything is fine until the French girl in the green mini Cooper shows up, and Sam decides to go to work and not come home, throwing a wrench into Sam and Annie's happily ever after.

MY THOUGHTS: I made this comment when I was 38% through Goodnight Beautiful by Aimee Molloy, 'OMG! This is like a packet of chocolate biscuits. You just can't stop at one!'

I read Goodnight Beautiful voraciously. I devoured it, and licked my fingers afterwards. This is a cleverly plotted and addictive read. I read it every moment I could, and many when I shouldn't have.

Goodnight Beautiful is a true psychological thriller. I am not going to recap the plot, or talk about the characters. I read the synopsis back in September 2020 when I requested the ARC. I didn't reread it before I started reading, and I recommend you do the same. The twists and turns will knock you for six, so clear your day and settle down to read this in one session.

Loved this one! So easy to read and lots of twists and turns along the way. Definitely a quick read and one I recommend.

This book was a whirlwind and I think that's putting it very lightly. I don't know if it was just me but there were so many parts of this book that confused me. The main one being after part 2 and even after coming to the end of the book, it still doesn't quite make sense to me.

Honestly, I got what the book was about in general and I understood where it was going (eventually) but overall, it was just... okay. It wasn't absolutely amazing but it wasn't terrible either. I liked it for what it was but thinking back on the confusion and the storyline as a whole, it definitely isn't my favourite book.

There were just a lot of things that annoyed me with this book and as I neared the end, I even managed to predict what was going to happen and because of that, it just made the whole thing anticlimactic. If that was supposed to be the big reveal, I was highly disappointed because I felt like I read through the whole book and basically got nothing at the end of it. It was just really underwhelming for me.

That's not to say however, that the writing style wasn't good because it was. There definitely were certain points that I did enjoy reading and there were times where I really did like the characters. They had a uniqueness about them, to a certain extent but then there were other times where I would just get annoyed reading them due to some of the things they did, which is a shame because I do think this had the potential to be something amazing but unfortunately, for me, it was far from that.

Overall, it was an okay book. Not terrible, not great. Just okay.
