This book was amazing from the beginning until the very end. I've read all of Ms Slater's books and can't wait for the next one! Highly recommended. TB |
Oh dear!! My head is still spinning, and I blame the author K. L. Slater for the way she kept me twirling like a leaf in the storm. I have to admit that I was arrogant enough to think I had the story all figured out and felt so proud of myself until the author took the sharp edge of her pen and hacked all my theories. This was one time where I was so happy losing. 2 sisters, Alexa with a family and child Florence, and Carrie who was a nurse down on her luck and was staying with Alexa to tide things over. A whistle-blower at work, after the deaths of a couple of patients, led to a police investigation. Carrie was in the center of it. Secrets were everywhere. Alexa was determined to help her sister and be there for her. WHAT A THRILL!! Kim has done it again, written a book so filled with uncertainties that I didn’t know which was the right way. Everything I thought I knew about the characters was cleaved to pieces. It was a thrill-a-minute, and it was done so subtly that I couldn’t help but bow down to the sheer brilliance. This was one heck of a different story, unlike any thriller I have read so far. The usual formula was left far behind. I never knew a new approach like this would work. But damn. It did so brilliantly. Full credit to the author. The story was told in multiple POV, but fear not, there was never any confusion. The story hid more secrets than I knew, and each one felt apt. The story went in so many directions, but it was still cohesive in all aspects. The characters were friendly enough but kept to the edge of unlikable, but they didn’t alienate me. Every character was turned inside out, but they still made sense. How was it possible? I kept thinking about the story long after I finished it and realized only a genius puppeteer with well-outlined plotlines could fool me like this. Wow!! Well played, Ms. Slater. We’ll meet again in the next book. |
I've read most of K L Slater's novels and this one was as solid at the rest. The story is told from the perspective of many different characters which added depth to it's development, lots of intrigue, suspicion and suspense with a well thought out plot with an ending that I didn't see coming! |
Omg......... this book was amazing I flew threw the pages with Olympic speed I can't get enough of k l slater books I think she's a fantastic writer one of my favourite authors of all time. I've read so many of her books, they are amazing reads and this was no exception I was hooked from the very first page. I found it like all her stories full of twists and turns threw out and it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way threw I would defiantly recommend this book if you like a good thriller to keep you reading threw the night hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did. |
A gripping thrilling psychological thriller! Lots of twists and suspense. Addictive! Carrie and Alexa are sisters, Carrie lives with Alexa and her family after getting divorced. The sisters are close. Told in many different perspectives which creates the constant question of whodunnit. Carrie is accused of some things at her job which is the hospital and Alexa thinks she couldn't possibly do these harmful things until something happens. Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy. |
Two unusual death's at the hospital where Carrie works. The evidence suggests she is guilty but does her sister Alexa believe she could do something like that. Carrie has always been there for Alexa. Alexa's husband doesn't trust Carrie is right to not trust her. The ending is worth reading this book for. Thanks NetGalley |
Being a huge fan of K.L.Slater I was super excited to get a chance to read her newest book. The author does a wonderful job of emersing the reader into the characters lives and I especially loved the medical aspect of it being in the medical field myself. The reader knows from the start that something just isn't right with the main character but I never guessed how this book ended. The change of points of views got a little confusing at first but it didn't take away from the storyline. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book. |
Another amazing read by K L Slater, The Girl She Wanted was such an addictive read, with a twist that had me shocked!! Definitely highly recommended. |
Carrie & Alexa have always been close. Carrie is a senior nurse working in the A& E dept., having recently broken up with her husband she is staying with Alexa & her husband Perry. Carrie adores Florence her niece & Alexa knows the feeling is mutual. Perry however is fed up with Carrie being there & keeps on at Alexa to ask Carrie to find somewhere else. When a junior doctor informs the authorities of the suspicious deaths of two patients in the A& E dept. suspicion falls on Carrie. Perry is even more determined that Carrie should go & after Florence is hurt whilst Carrie is looking after her Alexa feels totally torn. But is Carrie all she seems to be? KL Slater always provides a tense read with interesting characters. I don't think it is one of her best, but it is well worth reading. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. |

I really like K L Slater as an author and she writes a great thriller - this one didn't let up on the pace one bit and I literally read it in 2 sittings. It definitely didn't go the way I expected, so many twists! Very enjoyable read. |

Another excellent psychological thriller by this author whose books never disappoint. I found it gripping from the very beginning with so many twists. I had no idea how all of the ends would be tied up. Highly recommended. |
Genre: New adult thriller Plot: I trust my sister Carrie with my daughter’s life. But then she’s accused of a terrible crime. Carrie lives under our roof, she pushes my daughter on the swings, she takes her out for ice cream. You might ask, why do I let her? Why would I risk my darling baby? How could I let my sister stay? Because I have a dangerous secret too. One that only Carrie knows about. And if that secret gets out, I could lose my little girl… Rating: 5/5 My verdict: Firstly thank you to Netgalley for letting me read this amazing arc and I am for sure going to add KL to my favourite authors list. This book has it all; domineering relationships, tackles post natal depression, loyalty and even a god like complex as well as a need for bitter twisted revenge due to an incident that happened years ago. The writing is sharp and does what every thriller should do: give you goosebumps, it should have such believable characters that spring from the page and with each red herring at the end of each chapter will have you question your loyalty to each and everyone and second guess what we’ve all been told. This book isn’t about medical malpractice but deceit, revenge, back stabbing and domestic abuse allegations all whilst this nurse is to clear her name and teamed with her sister will do whatever it takes. I could easily see this being turned into a BBC drama. I loved how each chapter was an alternative point of view and how quickly secrets between friends can come out and how passed trauma can come back to haunt you. An excellent thriller about loyalty and honesty from an author who saw to write about a subject that is certainly outside of the norm. Major props to K.L Slater for keeping the readers on their toes and never to accept things on face value alone. |
This is my first book written by K.L Slater and it was great. I loved the characters ( Alexa, especially), the plot, and so many secrets. It was fast, no time to get bored. Thank you Netgalley for this book. |

This has to be one of my favourites by Kat Slater, with relatable characters, each with their own secrets, and a story so cleverly crafted it will really keep you guessing right until the dramatic conclusion. The psychological thriller genre was created with this book in mind! This is a must read for anyone who likes to get fully immersed in a gripping story |
The twelfth thriller by KL Slater! Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read an advance copy. |

Alexa's life is torn apart when her sister is accused of murdering patients at the hospital where she works as a nurse. Carrie is living with Alexa and husband Perry folowing the break down of her marriage and Alexa's mental health concerns. She helps out with childcare for Alexa's one year old Florence. But with one of the victims being a baby, can Alexa still trust her own sister around her precious daugher...? I found myself absolutely gripped by the plot of The Girl She Wanted. Alexa's dilemma and fears for her child are realistic and I think most readers would identify with her battle to trust her sister in light of the unfolding events at the hospital. Alexa and her husband are already at odds as he feels Carries has outstayed her welcome. But Alexa relies on her sister and is afraid to leave the house without her sister to support her. We don't find out about the cause of Alexa's anxiety until two thirds of the way through the book and it is heartbreaking. The style of writing is interesting as we have chapters from Alexa's first person perspective so see the effect of the accusations on her family and emotions. Other chapters are written in the third person to show the police investigation and the other family members and witnesses. This led me to be completely unsure about who Alexa could trust. The Girl She Wanted is a great psychological thriller. |
This was a light and easy read. It wasn’t majorly spectacular but had enough intrigue and twists to keep you reading and interested. it was, a straightforward PT, that has lots of hooks, excitement and characters that pique your interest. I didn’t know what the ending of this book would be and I certainly didn’t expect the outcome. I think as another reviewer has said, it is because it didn’t fit the narrative that we had been presented with earlier on in the book. The title is a little befuddling, also. Who is the girl, and who is she? I know a lot of titles are only sometimes on the periphery of the story, but this one had no bearing on the plot at all. |
I trust my sister Carrie with my daughter’s life. But then she’s accused of a terrible crime. Carrie lives under our roof, she pushes my daughter on the swings, she takes her out for ice cream. She swears she’s innocent, but can I believe her? I must put my darling Florence first. But I can’t just throw my sister out. This has a very strong start and I was surprised at how invested I was. The premise sounded okay but in reality, Slater has written a gripping, engaging read. The action begins quite early on and from the beginning Slater throws doubt and red herrings at every opportunity. Just when I thought I began to see the end another twist would enter and spin everything on its head. Then we get to the end and what a disappointing and ridiculous ending. The whole way through this, Slater ensures the plot feels slick and clever only to throw it all away for a cheap ending. I am sorry to be harsh but the ending completely ruins what was an intriguing read up until that point. Slater could have ensured this was a complex thriller but instead cheapens it with an unbelievable ending. Despite the ending seriously letting the read down I did still enjoy this read and that is a lot to do with Alexa. She is such a strong character and one who is very likeable as well. I hate to use this phrase but Alexa really goes on a journey in this read, the character she is at the beginning is very different to where she ends and I loved following her. The other characters are good but definitely supporting characters and you do not get such a good feel for them. 'The Girl She Wanted' starts off promising and slick and transcends into ridiculousness. What a disappointment. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance copy. |
A nurse is accused of killing two of her patients, one of whom was a baby. She lives with her married sister and her sister's baby daughter. The question is whether the nurse is safe to be around her niece. The story is set in Nottingham, as are many of K.L. Slater's books, and this is something I like as I know the place so well. It follows the process of a medical professional accused of misconduct and includes perspectives of a doctor, police officer, social worker as well as from the suspect, her sister and her sister's husband. All of these points of view expand the story and the tension as we don't know whose side to take. This is a fairly fast-paced story that is difficult to second-guess as characters have their own personality traits and hang-ups. It considers how secrecy is used as a way of control and disguised as being protective, as well as looking at a couple of other mental health issues. So definitely a psychological thriller. In all, this is a well-plotted book that looks at the fragility of family dynamics and instinctive trust. I have read a few of Slater's books and can say that they are getting better. A good read, recommended. |
I’ve read a couple books by this author before and really enjoyed them so I was very excited to start this one. Overall, I thought it was a great read! It kept me guessing the entire time and I couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to see how it all played out. It was one of those stories where you really don’t know who to trust and find yourself looking at everyone as though they’ve got something sinister going on. I really loved Alexa as a main character and it was great to see her growth over the course of the story. Would definitely recommend! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! |
