I enjoyed the build up of this story and the little twists up until about 75%, but the “tell” was really anti-climatic. It didn’t match up with any of the rest of the story, and then I felt that the book went on too long afterward. I care about Alexa regaining her independence, but not enough to read so many more chapters about it. Still a fun read though and I’ll look for this author again!

I love Kim Slater’s writing style and always look forward to reading her books. I liked the characters and there were definitely sone jaw-droppers that I did not see coming! This one was a bit of a slow burn and it took me several days to read. It didn’t really grab me until the last 20% or so of the book. I totally loved the ending although parts of it were bittersweet. All of the storylines tied up and were explored and explained. Slater’s books are always ones I will buy without even reading the description because I know they’ll be great!

There are authors that you know will always give you a gripping book. You see the name, you don't even read the blurb, you just grab it because you know you won't be dissapointed.

K.L Slater is deffinitely one of these authors for me. She always has this storyline, with minimal characters so it is easy to follow, but just with them few characters she is able to construct these massive webs of lies and deceit. But the way she so artfully divulges all of the secrets, the twists, the turns and the constant doubt of your own guesses is brilliant.

I was hooked on Carrie and Alexa's story right from the start. Because that is where the suspicion and questions begin and they don't stop. I cant wait to read more K.L Slater in the future and to continue to love her writing.

Book Description:

What if my sister is unstable and everyone can see it but me? What was she really doing standing over Florence’s cot in the middle of the night?

Alexa has always looked up to her older sister Carrie. Carrie lives in Alexa’s family home, and adores her one-year-old niece Florence. Alexa doesn’t know how they would cope without her. So when Carrie is suspended from her job as a senior nurse, accused of the most terrible crime, Alexa reels in disbelief. Alexa knows how caring Carrie is, and as she watches Florence gurgling and cooing whenever Carrie is around, she knows her little girl is in safe hands.

Alexa’s husband doesn’t trust Carrie. He wants her out of the house, unable to ignore what people are saying about her. But when he suggests that Carrie could be a danger to their daughter, Alexa shuts him out. Nobody will ever come between her and her sister.

Then Florence is hurt while in Carrie’s care and Alexa at last starts to wonder. Alexa has always wanted to protect Carrie from the past they have hidden. But does Alexa know what Carrie wants? And will the secret that has kept the sisters together now destroy her little girl?

A completely gripping rollercoaster of a read about the darkness families hide behind closed doors. Fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train will be hooked on The Girl She Wanted.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Girl She Wanted' by K. L Slater.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 22nd October 2020

This is the first book that I have read by this author. It lost definitely won't be my last!!

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful and colourful cover and intriguing sounding blurb. The write up also stated that 'fans of Gone Girl will be hooked' . I am a big fan of 'Gone Girl' so I am interested to see if this book lives up to it's standard. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue and 61 chapters. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is set in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 UK 🇬🇧. I always seem to get on with books that are set in the UK better as I am from Wales and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book.

This book is written in a mix of first and third person perspective and the main protagonists are Alexa and Carrie. I tend to really enjoy books written with a mix of perspectives as it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters while also bonding with the protagonists more. There are also inputs from Perry (Alex's husband) Amanda from child protection services and Adam from the police investigating.

A fantastically written and very descriptive compelling novel by one of my new favourite authors!! Well done K. L Slater you made the list!! I loved the fact that there are many characters that you see their perspectives from without being too many and making it confusing.

The storyline was captivating from page one and kept me turning the pages as quick as I could until the shocking finalé, I most definitely did not see that one coming so a huge congratulations for that!! I have read many psychological thrillers and it's getting harder and harder to surprise me but you managed to do it!! There's nothing worse than working out what's going to happen when your not even half way through the book but I was wrong about who did what on all points!! This book has a unique storyline and packed with suspense, tension, drama, red herrings and many surprises to keep you hooked!!

THE characters were portrayed perfectly and suited the storyline. I was very wrong in thinking certain things about certain characters but can't say any more as not to spoil the storyline for future readers. Each of the characters were well defined with their own individual personalities which all worked well within the storyline.

Overall an explosive psychological thriller that will shock and surprise you throughout. A true page turner!!

Genres covered include Psychological Thriller, Suspense, Thriller, Crime Fiction and Psychological Fiction.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as EVERYONE looking for a good read.

357 pages.

This book is £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

As always I thoroughly enjoyed this book by KL Slater. A great storyline with interesting shady characters.

It had a great mix of people to suspect and all with interesting back stories. This is one of the things I love about KL Slaters novels. You can really connect and feel the emotions they are going through.

The end had me welling up too. This was a little unexpected so great conclusion to the story and really gave me the feels.

For me another great novel!

Favorite Quote:

He was dog-tired most of the time these days, even on his day off. Exhaustion was like a fusty smell that clung to his clothes no matter how often he washed them. It was always there.

My Review:

I rarely write negative reviews as I generally stop reading, so keep in mind, this is just my highly unqualified opinion. But I felt all itchy and prickly reading this one - it just wasn’t doing it for me. The storylines were all over the place and were extremely far-fetched and didn’t hold water while cast with characters who were too annoying for words, or maybe I can’t seem to find the right words to express my discontent.

The main character was painfully exasperating and working my last nerve as she was terminally naïve and living in a death spiral of gullibility while suffering a stubbornly fatal case of denial. Yet the author kept me reading, damn my insatiable curiosity and need for closure, they are a plague and will most likely be the death of me!

My friend Shalini has niggles, I have moanings, carpings, grumbles, grousings, and with this tale, I dare say I’ll go all fancy pants with remonstrances. Yet I kept reading, and I will confess - I never saw this ending coming, at all! So I was glad I hung in there, but again, this is just my highly unqualified opinion.

My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Good writing, but a fair amount of showing and not telling. The undertone of the writing style starts off cheerfully, almost as if you are reading a fairy tale: Easter bunnies and chocolate egg hunts - how pleasant!

But then all hell breaks loose and patients start to die at a local hospital. Alexa's sister Carrie is suspected of wrongdoing and then later gets into more trouble. Reputations are ruined by all the allegations flying around in the press and among the hospital staff.. Carrie is a domineering pain, but did she really do it? Is the press and Carrie's employers/co-workers being fair to her?

Trouble abounds in this domestic thriller. In the end, you realize there were red herrings all over the place. Not such a huge surprise in the end, but the writing style leads you to believe the author has told you what is going on in a specific character's mind, when in fact she had obviously withheld other, more sinister thoughts and motives.

I am not fond of the breezy writing style the author employed here. In fact, I find many British novels are being written in this style these days. Dialogue makes the characters more present and real to the reader. We are able to observe action in play, instead of reacting to it as if we were listening to a newscaster reading from a teleprompter:. "In today's news......"
I think you get why I am not blown away by this book like all the other reviewers are, but good grammar always gets high marks from me, so I'm going to rate this one a 3.7 out of 5.

I am a big fan of K L Slater’s books and I am delighted to share my review for yet another gripping psychological thriller.

This is a complex stories which makes you question many of the character’s actions and motives. Carrie is being investigated following the two sudden deaths of patients on her ward. She maintains her innocence and that she is being framed, but is she telling the truth? And who could be framing her, and why? What happened during the tragic death of Daisy Mae? And is Perry really spending all his away time working, or is there something else going on?

This was a book that really kept me hooked and guessing. I struggled to identify with the character of Alexa, and saw her as quite weak and a little frustrating. I ended up questioning her actions and motives too!

The author uses cliffhanger endings to chapters and intriguing statements that tell you something but confuse you even further, at the same time! These are great features of her work and add to the addictive and gripping nature of it.

Overall this is a great read for fans of psychological fiction!

My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Girl She Wanted’ by K.L. Slater in exchange for an honest review.

Carrie is a senior nurse, who following the end of her marriage is living with her younger sister, Alexa. She adores her one-year-old niece, Florence. Alexa’s husband, Perry, isn’t keen on the arrangement even though he is away from home for long periods with his position on a North Sea offshore oil rig and knows that Alexa needs the support of her sister.

However, then there is an investigation at the hospital that results in Carrie being suspended and the police getting involved. This increases Perry’s mistrust of Carrie and he suggests that she could be a danger to their daughter. Is that possible? Alexa is uncertain.

While I was quite interested in the hospital/police investigation, I wasn’t that engaged with the domestic drama that quickly dominated the narrative. I also found Alexa’s constant cooing over Baby Florence a bit much. Perhaps it is the kind of thing that would appeal more to mums.

Overall, I found it an okay read but didn’t wow me.

I love this author and this book doesn’t disappoint. KL Slater has become one of my go to authors for when I want to read a good book. The mystery around the death of two ER patients kept me guessing until the very end of the story.

If you can’t trust your own sibling particularly one who’s been there for you when you’re at your lowest, who can you trust? That’s the question Alexa has to ask herself as the revelations surrounding two unusual deaths at her sister’s hospital. But is Carrie as guilty as the evidence suggests?

But Alexa’s loyalties are well and truly divided. Her sister has been there for her through thick and thin all her life. But Perry, her husband, is the man she’s chosen to spend the rest of her life with and have a gorgeous baby girl with. I couldn’t help but sympathise with this mixed up woman struggling to make sense of the events going on around. And that before you consider the blow to her confidence that motherhood has dealt; unable to leave the house with her daughter unless Carrie or Perry are by her side.

I have to mention the location. With Nottingham being the backdrop for this tense psychological thriller brought a warm and fuzzy to me. I’m a Nottingham girl originally so the references to familiar locations around the city and its suburbs was great for me.

The Girl She Wants is a thriller that made me chase my tail as I read. I wanted to be Alexa having that confidence in Carrie’s innocence but as I read the police based chapters the doubt crept in. As Alexa’s doubt grew so did my own… but then boom that climax … that was not what I expected in the slightest!!

I’m ashamed to say this is my first novel by K.L. Slater despite me having a number in my kindle. Fortunately for me, I loved The Girl She Wanted so I can’t wait to dive into another Slater creation when my TBR allows.

EXCERPT: ... this was the second case in the last few months where a patient admitted to the emergency ward with a seemingly fairly minor condition had deteriorated dramatically.

Nathan recalled the six-month-old baby girl who'd been admitted with a high temperature and vomiting - a suspected nasty viral infection. Following a period of intravenous rehydration, the child had appeared to be recovering; then, completely without warning, her condition had rapidly declined. Urgent tests had shown the onset of kidney failure and two days later she had died.

And now Angus Titchford was fighting for his life, even though his initial prognosis had been perfectly routine. It was unusual and troubling. Very troubling indeed.

ABOUT THE GIRL SHE WANTED: What if my sister is unstable and everyone can see it but me?

MY THOUGHTS: I don't get the title. 🤷‍♀️ If anyone can explain the relevance, I would appreciate it.

The Girl She Wanted by K.L. Slater is quite slow moving initially. There is a lot of repetition of accusations, and of veiled clues to some past trauma in Alexa's life that has affected her ability to cope with almost anything. She comes across as very neurotic, dependent and needy. I preferred Carrie's character, although at times she could be quite manipulative of Alexa, and can appear unbalanced. There is a lot of tension in this household, with Alexa's husband, Perry, resentful of the close relationship between the sisters and putting pressure on Alexa to make Carrie move out.

Ms Slater can also be manipulative. I shifted my suspicions of who, if anyone, was responsible for the deaths of the patients in A&E several times. To begin with I wasn't entirely sure that anyone was responsible. These things do happen, especially with the very young and the elderly. But someone was responsible . . . and some of my suspicions were rather wild!

This is a quick, easy read. It is not my favourite amongst Ms Slater's books, of which I have read most, if not all, but it is a decent read that contains a few surprises, and will have you scratching your head as to whom the culprit could be.

Tense and addictive. K L Slater has once again grabbed my attention with her gripping storytelling. Alexa and Carrie are sisters. Carrie has moved in with Alexa, her husband, and little girl Florence after her divorce. Alexa is a little more dependent on her sister Carrie then husband Perry would like. When Carrie who is a nurse is accused of wrong doings at the hospital Perry is more convinced than ever that she needs to leave the home. But Alexa knows that her sister would never do anything hurtful or harmful, that is until.....

The story bounces between the perspectives of several different characters keeping you informed and continually suspicious of everyone.. I really enjoyed getting to know all these characters and found the family dynamics intriguing. The more the layers of the story were peeled away the more unsure I was as to what was going on. There were definitely some twist at the end that I did not see coming. The original title of this book was DEAR DAUGHTER and I have no idea why they changed it because I cannot for the life of me figure out what this new title means? A quick absorbing thriller.

WOW! The Girl She Wanted exemplifies K.L. Slater at her absolute best! 5 solid glowing stars! Gripping, emotional, intense, and full of unexpected twists...100% incredible! The Girl She Wanted, by K.L. Slater, is so remarkable that it exceeds the thrills and chills of so many authors of her genre. K.L. Slater truly proves herself as a literary genius with her creative character development and masterfully thought out plot. The Girl She Wanted is impossible to put down and will stick with you long after you finish reading. It is an edge of your seat thriller that is full of suspense, mystery, intrigue, and twists! The Girl She Wanted is about one sister’s involvement in two murders and the other sister’s involvement in her own unimaginable saga...and neither sister can claim or prove that they are completely innocent of wrongdoings. The Girl She Wanted will keep you questioning how much omission of the truth is a lie, and at what point a lie becomes a crime.

When Alexa’s sister Carrie becomes the only suspect of two intentional deaths at the hospital where she works, both sisters feel like the world has been ripped out from underneath them. Alexa needs to believe that her sister, Carrie, is innocent because Carrie is the only person who can help her. Carrie is the only person in the world who knows Alexa’s terrible secret. Carrie is the only person who guards that secret as closely as Alexa does, and is the only person who knows how to help Alexa maintain sanity. If Carrie is guilty, then that means that both of their lives will fall apart because Carrie is the glue that holds everything together.

Although Carrie and Alexa have always been close, things weren’t always this extreme. Alexa used to be happy, successful, and self sufficient. That was before the unthinkable happened though. Ever since then she’s always counted on Carrie to help guide her, and Carrie has never let her down. Alexa’s marriage with Perry used to be effortlessly comfortable too, but Perry doesn’t know the truth. The weight of that silence is putting a huge strain on their marriage, but thankfully Carrie is there for her.

After a painful divorce, Carrie’s husband left her with a mountain of debt and no place to live. Alexa welcomed Carrie into her home with her family. After eight months of living with Alexa, her husband Perry, and their 1 year old daughter Florence, their lives have become a predictable routine...until an emergency meeting at the hospital where Carrie works leads her down a dark and sinister path. Carrie quickly becomes the only suspect for the murders of an infant and an elderly man. Alexa is adamant that Carrie didn’t do it, and knows without a shadow of a doubt that Carrie is innocent. When Carrie’s own secrets become entangled with facts about the investigation though, Alexa finds herself wondering how well she really knows her sister. The alarming amount of evidence against Carrie makes it hard to deny guilt, and for the first time ever, Alexa knows she’s not the only one hiding something. Carrie may be the one facing criminal charges, but Alexa has her own inner demons that she’s desperate to keep hidden.

When Alexa’s husband Perry becomes insistent that Carrie move out immediately, Alexa reassures him that Carrie is innocent and that he shouldn’t be worried or upset. Obviously Alexa’s biggest concern is her daughter Florence, but Carrie is practically a second mother to Florence so she knows Carrie would never hurt her. Torn between the loyalty she feels for her sister and the loyalty she feels for her husband, Alexa has to make one of the hardest decisions she ever had to make. Perry makes Alexa promise him ONE thing...after that, none of their lives are ever the same again.

Thank you K.L Slater, Bookouture, and Netgalley for allowing me the privilege of reading The Girl She Wanted. My feedback is voluntary and expresses my honest review and opinions.

Girl She Wanted by K.L Slater is a psychological thriller and when its by this particular author you know it will have everything you need in this kind of book. Tense and twisty to say the least! This book centres on a hospital where two people have died in A and E in suspicious circumstances. An allegation has been made about Carrie Parsons, a nurse there. A Junior Doctor makes the allegation and sends the police in Carrie's direction for investigation.
Carrie lives together with her sister, Alexa, her husband Perry and one year old daughter Florence since Carrie's divorce.
As Carrie gets suspended she finds support in her sister, but not everyone feels the same way.
A fantastic storyline and a book that rips up the 'usual' formula and reimagines said formula. A read that led me down so many wrong roads I was on the edge of my seat dying to know how it would end.
The characters all had it in them to be the culprit and that is due to the excellent writing of K.L Slater. She has the skill to turn everything and everyone on their heads and, STILL, have us readers guessing. A brilliant book yet again and can't wait for the next one.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the copy of this book for my review.

Alexa and her husband Perry are having some problems and it seems that their primary difficulties is that Alexa are due to the fact that Alexa is supporting her troubled older sister Carrie above all else. If Perry had his way he would insist that Carrie leave their home. Instead, after Carrie's marriage ended, Alexa invited Carrie to stay with them and their toddler daughter Florence. Alexa loves the bond that Carrie and Florence shares. Furthermore, Perry works away from home for weeks at a time on an oil rig, so Alexa enjoys having extra help with the baby.

However, one day the police arrive and they take Carrie away for questioning. Alexa is quite concerned, but so relieved that Perry is currently away. She knows that if he knew Carrie had any issues that concerned the police, she would have no choice but to ask Carrie to leave. Alexa is utterly shocked when she learns that Carrie might have been involved in the death of two patients. Carrie is a senior nurse at a nearby hospital and the deaths proved to be unusual. Carrie is not charged, but she is suspended from her job. Alexa is very concerned as to how to tell Perry, all while trying to figure out a way to get information and to help Carrie.

When Florence is hurt under Carrie's care, Alexa begins to wonder, and she knows she must inform Perry as to what is going on. Could Carrie have indeed been responsible for the deaths at the hospital? Could the fact that Florence was hurt be due to Carrie's actions? Then there is the fact that there is a hidden secret between Alexa and Carrie, and if the truth came out, so much could be lost, and at the very least, the safety of Florence.

I love the way that this book was written. I wanted to believe Carrie guilty of wrongdoing from the very start, so I love the winding trail that this book took to get my feelings so involved. I was captivated from beginning to end, even to the point that Perry began to raise doubts with me. When an author can keep me on my toes and invested in the characters, then I count it as a win for me. Actually, every book I have read by K. L. Slater has managed to evoke strong feelings in me while reading, and this book is right up there with the ones I've read previously by her.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The Girl She Wanted by K.L. Slater is a psychological thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

Alexa and her husband Perry open their doors to Alexa's sister Carrie when her marriage falls apart.  Carrie's presence has been helpful to Alexa, who sometimes struggles with looking after her one-year old daughter Florence, especially since Perry's work takes him away for 2 and 3 weeks at a time.  But that was eight months ago, and Carrie shows no signs of leaving.  Perry is getting frustrated and wants his home back to just his wife and daughter.

When Carrie is suspended from the hospital where she is a senior nurse in the Emergency ward,  Alexa is stunned.  Why didn't Carrie tell her there was a problem?  When Carrie is arrested for two deaths on the ward, Alexa is more than stunned.  Her sister couldn't possibly be responsible for these deaths.  Perry, on the other hand isn't surprised at anything that Carrie does.  He just wants her out of his house, and away from his daughter.  Alexa is determined to stick up for her sister.  But even Alexa starts to doubt things when Florence is injured while in Carrie's care.

Alexa and Carrie have been very close,  but there are secrets in this house, and peoples lives are going to change.

My Opinions:

As always, Kim Slater's writing is exceptional.  The plot premise was different, but it boiled down to a rather dysfunctional family, lies, secrets, and controlling behaviour.  It was a fast read.  The twist was good, although I did suspect....  The ending was drawn out while every person's "after-the-event" life was detailed, so that it all wrapped up in a neat little bow.  That was too much.

I guess the main problem I had with the book is that I didn't like any of the characters.  Although Alexa came across as weak, and then found her strength later in the book, I still didn't like her.  I did not like Carrie from word go, and I had no use for Perry either.   The dynamics of their relationships was "off".

I'm probably in the minority on this one.  It was good, but it just didn't feel up to her usual standard.  I have read 9 or 10 of Kim Slater's books, and rated them all 4 or 5 stars.  This  was good, but it just didn't sit well with me.  All that being said, it certainly won't stop me from reading her next one.

The Girl She Wanted is an excellent psychological thriller by one of my favourite authors, KL Slater.

In this, my sixth KL Slater novel, sisters Carrie and Alexa live in Alexa’s family home. Alexa has a very young daughter, Florence and she relies on Carrie for support. When Carrie is suspended from her job as a senior nurse, Alexa is disbelieving as she knows first-hand just how caring Carrie is. However, Alexa's husband, Perry has concerns about Carrie and doesn't want her around. When Florence is hurt whilst being looked after by Carrie, Alexa begins to have doubts.

Full of undercurrents, this was a cleverly plotted page-turner with many twists leading up to an exciting conclusion. The narrative was from multiple perspectives and the reader was not privy to key pieces of information, helping to maintain the high levels of ambiguity and intrigue. Long-held secrets, family dynamics, obsession, and suspicion all had a place in this fabulous and compulsive thriller.

Deeply layered and strongly character-driven, this masterful tale provided many curveball moments along the way. This is a novel not to be missed!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request, and this review is my own unbiased opinion.

I really enjoyed this. Strong characters and a fast, gripping plot.
I predicted the ending but I think that says more about how much I read!
This wasn't a book of the year for me, but I still enjoyed it.
