A well written story that blows you away with its unique suspense and characters that is going to blow you away highly recommended. |
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading. I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review. |
Thankyou to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author, D K Hood, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Promises *n The Dark in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion. I have read every book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. I think they just get better and better. The premise of the storyline promises so much and it delivers. The characters are well defined and mesh well together. The storyline was well written and easy to follow. Very enjoyable read. 3.5 stars. Worth a look. |
It’s hard to believe that this is book ten of the Kane and Alton series! By now, they’re like old friends that I check in on to see what what’s happening in their neck of the woods. I’m never disappointed. As always, I enjoy the depth that the author puts into the characters. They’re all “real” people with logistically sound backgrounds that sometimes have direct bearing on current events. The term that keeps coming to mind whenever I read and review one of the books in this series is how realistic everything is. Yes, the bad guy is bad, but he also has dimension. Yes, the investigators solve the crime, but they’re not perfect. Suffice to say that it’s another great entry in the series. For a detailed review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC of the book. |
This series is well established and by far one of my favourites, so I had been eagerly anticipating this latest instalment for quite some time. Detective Jenna Alton and her team are called out to a family home that had been burnt to the ground. Whilst investigating, they discover three bodies which are charred, and then realise that one of the daughters from this family unit is in fact missing. As a search begins to locate her, several days later they discover her body. And then, before they can fully begin their investigation, another house is set alight, and it becomes apparent that these are no accidents at all. This was such an incredibly fast paced, heart racing story that had me well and truly captivated from the start. The characters are well developed, and you seem to learn more about them with each book. The plot was perfectly paced and kept you guessing until the very end. A page turner for certain!. And I thoroughly look forward to future books within this series. |
Another great book in this series Detective Jenna Alton and her team are called to the charred remains of a family home there is three charred bodies in the remains they soon find out that one of the daughters is missing. A search is put out for her but days later a body is found and it is hers.. Before the get anywhere with the investigation another home is destroyed . Can they catch the killer before they strike again. Can’t wait for the next in the series. Thanks NetGalley |
This was my first book of 2021 and it's going to be a hard act to follow that's for sure the bar has been set and it's high! I can't quite believe this is the first time I have had the pleasure of reading a book by this author it certainly won't be the last. This is clearly a series but that did not effect my enjoyment of the book having said that I think it would have enhanced my reading experience to have had the background info but I can catch up. A high class thrilling explosive crime read Wonderful detailed characters (especially the dogs) a passionate, intense, detailed, gruesome, delicious read it really has it all. Had me gripped you get very invested in finding the suspect and wanting justice for the horrific suffering of the victims. This left me wanting more and I am defiantly adding this to my top reads! |
Again the team are chasing a serial killer. This time the FBI called them in as consultants. I like this team approach. Both strong female leads who each know their area of expertise. For a small town, a lot of killers visit. Or as the last book taught us, they have heard of Jenna's expertise and arrive in town to challenge her. But not in this book either. This series is so well written and the minor characters are being developed they feel like family. When the deputy's new wife breaks down I assumed the killer would pick her up. Every interaction in this series has the potential for the baddies to win. That is what keeps me reading! |
I think this series will now become one of my top favorite series. Detectives Kane and Alton have become a part of my family along with the rest of their team. In the 10th book in the series we finally get to the case that brought Kane to Black Rock Falls. Someone is killing families and the killer's signature looks a lot like the one from D.C. years earlier. FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter are back to help along with Carter's bomb canine, Zorro. I haven't been able to put this series down since I started it and was excited when Netgalley gave me the chance to read and review the newest installment. You definitely won't be disappointed if you love a good detective novel. |
Oh my life what an opening!!! Horrific doesn’t go far enough and this tenth Black Rock Falls thriller doesn’t let up!! Because of the location of this jaw dropping opener, Promises In The Dark brings to the forefront the partnership of Jo Wells and Ty Carter, the FBI agents I’ve got to know over the last couple of books. Only this time it feels Carter wants to prove something with his attitude to my favourite sheriff’s department. Thankfully Jenna is having none of it! As the story goes on, the nutter causing all the problems starts to get nuttier and the Black Rock Falls team is desperate for results. Desperate to prevent more loss of life. But they’re up against it when they meet the locals of Louan who have some rather outdated views on life. I am just so thankful it’s them and not me dealing with these antiquated beliefs. “It’s the psychopaths who believe this part of the world is a killer’s playground.” I love the way the author acknowledges through her characters the crazy murder rates of Black Rock Falls. Hood has done it a few times in the series and it never ceases to make me smile to read the quips in such dark and twisted stories. Yet again, the new addition to the Kane and Alton family is another fine one. For me, it ticked all the boxes (and more) of a crime thriller I have come to expect from the keyboard of Hood. Bring On Book 11!!! |
This is such a fantastic series. Each book can technically be read as a stand alone but each character has so much background information I think it’s best to read them in order. Kane’s past comes up in this book and we get to find out more about his late wife and experience his grief all over again. I think my favourite thing about this series is there are so many amazing characters and we get to know them all. Jenna is a bit of a weird one and sometimes annoys me but all in all they are probably my favourite team to read. Unfortunately I did guess who the bad guy was as I found some of the hints a bit obvious. However, it was still a great read and I look forward to more. I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review |

A teenager is kidnapped while her family are burned to death. Explosives have been used and the FBI are called in due to a link to a previous bombing in DC: the one that killed Kane's wife. Can he stay professional and catch the killer who is determined to murder innocents... Promises in the Dark in the 10th book in the Kane and Alton series. It would work as a standalone book but I think the character development and details in the previous books improve the reading experience. The personal involvement of Kane in the case reminds us of the sadness he has been carrying: the murder of his wife has haunted him and now he needs to confront the past. This adds a layer of emotion that is more pronounced than in other books in the series. The FBI characters we have been introduced to previously return in this book. Jenna struggles with outdated attitutudes towards women from both her colleages and suspects which adds a tension to the plot. As well as the murders which are quite graphically described in forensic detail, there are rapes but these are not shown to the reader. Some of the scenes are quite horrific but the writing is so compelling that I found Promises in the Dark impossible to put down. I had no idea of the culprit so enjoyed the exploration of the suspects' motives. There are some chapters written from the killer's perspective but no clues are given away! |
This 10th installment in the crime thriller series featuring Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane has them chasing down a murderous pyro psychopath. Oh my goodness, the Black Rock Falls area of Montana has yet another serial killer on a rampage. To be honest, it is starting to strain credulity that this many crazies find that area and commit so many awful crimes. In this case, the crimes involve bombs and fire -- along with kidnapping and a host of other deviant behaviors. I think the tipping point for me was the connection between what was happening in Black Rock Falls to what happened in DC years ago to Kane and his wife, Annie. NO SPOILERS. Despite having read this series from the start, I have never really liked Jenna and finally admit that I likely never will. I just find her too unbelievable in her role; her attitude and behavior irritates me. Although there was a lot of good forensic detail and long descriptions of everything involved in the murder and arson, I had guessed most everything about the outcome and the perpetrator quite early. I think the motivation explaining all these crimes was a bit of a stretch, but I can see by other reviews that no one else has any issues with it. So why do I keep reading the series despite my issues? I like to finish what I start and I figure this can't go on much longer but who knows. Surely it's about time for a consummation of the Kane and Alton relationship? We will have to wait and see as book #11 should be out soon. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review. |

My favourite series, I couldn’t wait to read book 10. Following a house fire in nearby Louan, started by explosives, Sherriff Jenna Alton and deputy Dave Kane are enlisted as FBI consultants to help find the killer. We meet agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter again, and the four set about solving the case. Kane’s past rears it’s head unexpectedly and he has to be careful to maintain his new persona while mourning the loss of his wife all over again. This is a really fast paced, action packed story and we meet all then usual familiar faces in Black Rock Falls along the way. Did I guess who the killer was? No! Although the answer was right in front of my face. I miss Black Rock Falls already. |
Bless me father for I have sinned…Before reading Promises in the Dark, I have to confess that I have not read a book by D.K. Hood before! Why I haven’t, I can’t answer, why now with book 10, well I have read so many positive things about this series since starting my blog last year, I just had to see for myself what I had been missing out on! Oh boy, have I been missing out! Promises in the Dark is a thrilling read from start to finish. D.K. Hood pulled me into town of Black Rock Falls and into the lives of each of the characters, experiencing the story through their eyes. It is full of action and suspense and although I went in blind, I had no trouble following along. Starting with book 10, I figured that I may have had trouble connecting with Kane and Alton, as I didn’t know anything about them, but this was not the case at all. The connection was instantaneous and I felt like I was catching up with old friends that I hadn’t seen for years. It was comfortable, which is a tribute to how they have been written. Promises In The Dark is a cracking read and one I throughly enjoyed. I do have a lot to catch up on and I hope to be able to go back and start from the beginning at some point, but until then, I am so glad to have been given the opportunity to read this instalment. It was an absolute pleasure to read and review Promises In The Dark which I highly recommend. Thank you to D.K. Hood, Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advanced copy of Promises In The Dark, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily. |

FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter are called in by the Sheriff of Louann after an explosion and fire in a house which killed a husband and wife and their daughter. Shane Wolfe the ME from Black Rock Falls is also called in. It soon becomes apparent that explosives were used to start the fire and that the family’s elder daughter Sophie is missing. Wells and Carter call in Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane to assist with the case. Agent Carter and his Doberman Zorro discover explosive components and link the device to a case in DC which is of huge significance to Deputy Kane. With another young girl kidnapped and another family targeted with explosives and fire Jenna and her team struggle to identify the perpetrator from a group of several suspects; all of whom could be capable of the atrocities. This is the tenth in the Alton & Kane series by D K Hood and is again a fantastic read. Absolutely love this series. Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review. |
Promises in the Dark is the tenth in the police procedural series featuring Detectives David Kane and Jenna Alton. Set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, Sheriff Jenna Alton makes a very likeable detective although she is sometimes a little short on inspiration. However, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small town, which has certainly seen more than its fair share of murders! Her deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills. Though the story was told primarily from the investigator's viewpoint, there were some fascinating chapters from the killer. This novel was an electrifying and solid police procedural and it was a well-balanced thriller that had me glued to the pages. I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. Despite Black Rock Falls being a small place, Jenna and her team were still left with a lot of work to do in the very high-octane case. This really was a spectacular crime-thriller that grabbed me hook, line and sinker. The team embarked on an exciting and exhilarating mission to find the perpetrator and all the time the tension snowballed as D.K. Hood launched at me some captivating misdirection. The writing flowed effortlessly and swiftly as Promises in the Dark delved into the topic of murder with themes of abduction, bombing and rape, culminating in an explosive, heart-pounding conclusion. I will be seeking out the first five instalments of this masterful series. A brilliant, terrifying, pulse-pounding and very highly recommended crime-thriller. I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion. |
Favorite Quote: There was something about Aunt Betty’s Café that soothed even the roughest day, like sitting in your grandma’s kitchen and waiting for the cookies to come out the oven. My Review: I am seriously slacking and horribly uninformed as this was book #10 in a series and my first time picking up one of D.K. Hood’s eleven books. It was a nonstop whirligig of high voltage action and the author’s writing slotted me right in the midst of it. I am exhausted and feel like I’ve been in a marathon while digging through ashes, performing autopsies, climbing mountains, jumping out of helicopters, dodging bullets, skidding on ice, crawling through spooky caves, and running after dogs while chasing an elusive psychopath arsonist who was also a murdering rapist. Unholy smokes, he was definitely a multitasking fiend, yet he still had time and energy to compose blog posts which were brilliant in their double meanings. Despite his unethical and disturbing proclivities, I had to stop to admire his wry phrasing as well as his devotion to his work ethic. |
I know that for a fact I will use the same words that I always do. This book is awesome, epic, amazing, thrilling. The thing is…well…its all true. This time things get personal and just a little bit too personal for two of our fine deputies of Black Rock Falls. Times are nice and light at the start, we have a tranquil time until one night that the night sky is literally ablaze! I am not going to say anything about the book because I purposely didn’t read the blurb. I know that if I see D.K. Hood on a book I am reading it regardless. So I went in blind, I didn’t know what experience we would have this time, I just knew like a thrill seeker I would love it. What I will say is that I really wasn’t disappointed. It is a book where no element is boring, through all these words and pages, the tension is relentless. Lives are in danger and the only way to survive is to read, read as if your life depended on it….because someone life does. My teeth were set on edge, my nerves were shot, my tears were a bit leaky yet I will go back again and again to Black Rock Falls, to Kane, Alton, Wolfe Carter and Jo. I always moan, but never enough Rowley, he is so lovely I just smile when is on the page. The only thing I will mention about the book is the Whispering Caves, the stories that Atothi and his Grandad told the team were creepy. The darkness in the caves when the lights go out has a life of its own. It is just as menacing as the villain in the book, if not more so. Yes, the villain is terrifying but with them, you always have the chance to survive, to escape. In the caves, you have little chance as we find out, to me that is more terrifying. This was a darker story than most but it was a story with closure and not necessarily the closure we expected but it was one that we needed. Maybe the next book will be lighter? Haha, who are we kidding, this is Ms Hood, she will have yet another dark and twisty tale for us to unravel. This series just gets stronger and stronger. I have loved each and every book in this series, I feel like I have grown with Jenna and Dave. We watch them become completely whole, we know their secrets, their darkness but the light have broken through and they are complete. I can’t wait for the next instalment and I hear it’s not too long to wait and with another character being added to the team, I know I for one is excited about that! |
