This series goes from strength to strength. In my opinion this is her best book so far. I actually say this about each book in this series. One of top series to read. I have been with Kane and Alton from the beginning. I feel as though I know the team and Black Rock Falls sounds idyllic. Serial Killers seem to gravitate to this beautiful setting and it is upto Jenna, Kane, Wolfe and her team to stop them. In this book the past of one of her team comes rushing back. It is now personal. The tension and suspense is really ramped up. Constantly holding my breath and sat on the edge of my seat. Plenty of heart in your mouth moments and I literally have no nails left. This book is that good!!!! Fast paced and for me crime thriller par excellence. A well deserved five stars, it really deserves more. Another gripping addition in this very addictive series. Loved it!!!!! Thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review. |
Detective Kane and Alton book 10. Can be read alone, but would read others to learn their dynamic. Long involved book. Thriller, graphic in parts Good writing, but a bit to intense for me. 3.85 |

AWESOME crime thriller. The investigation of an arsonist/murderer rackets up the suspense & resolves the heartbreak Dave has been carrying over his deceased wife Annie. Superb series, with lots of guessing who the culprit is. Great characters & fabulous story lines in all of D K Hoods' books. . RECOMMEND the total series. Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for a copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. |
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping book oh my word, i love this series being back in the world of kane and alton and man this book is gruesome and gripping.... a family held hostage but when kane and alton arrives there is nothing left of the scene, it has been totalled, 3 dead body remain with evidence of zip ties around their ankles wolfe has his work cut out for him and before long jo and carter join in the hunt for the murderer who seems to have links with bombing in dc.... oh my word this book...its nasty in places but oh sooo good and will keep you reading right to the end...oh that last chapter had me in tears... cant wait for the next book in this brilliant series... |
Another amazing book in the Alton & Kane series. Even though this is book 10 the series just seems to keep getting better. A real rollercoaster of a ride with a few suspects to work out the culprit. A fast paced story with twists and turns that kept me guessing I love the relationship between Jenna & Dave and hope something more than a working relationship develops finally. I can’t wait for the next book!!! |

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Promises in the Dark, the tenth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of Blackwater Falls, Montana. The Woods family home in neighbouring Louan is blown up and 15 year old Sophie Woods kidnapped. Jenna and Dave are asked to assist in the investigation and are shattered when links are found to Dave’s past. When Sophie’s body is found and another girl taken they realise that the killer won’t stop unless they catch him/her. I thoroughly enjoyed Promises in the Dark which is a high octane thriller with plenty of twists and turns. I though the previous novel lacked a little oomph but this is a welcome return to form with tension, action and a well concealed perpetrator. I liked the slow but steady drip of reveals which culminates in an action packed resolution. The novel is mostly told from the investigative point of view with a few chapters devoted to the killer’s thoughts. I found these latter illuminating in terms of the plot, but basically it’s just another crazy venting about injustice. It would seem that FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter are to become regular characters in the series. They are welcome additions, bringing even more skills to what is probably the most qualified Sheriff’s department in the country. Promises in the Dark is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending. |

Another great story from D K Hood, featuring Detectives Jenna Alton and her partner Dave Kane. As usual keeps the reader guessing and wondering where the story is going leading to an intriguing finale. One wonders whether this pair will become more than just partners in work? |
First off I want to say a big thank you to thank Bookouture for inviting me to join the blog tour for this book as well as letting me read and review .And for letting me continue on with this series .And a big thanks to NetGalley as well. Because for one Bookouture is one of my all time favorite publishers for thrillers and second as soon as I saw that they had announced this book on their facebook page Bookoutre Anonymous I knew I was going to request it, even though I've only read so far one book from this series , that one book made me hooked on this series, and other thing is I love reading about 2 of my all time favorite characters in any series and that's Kane and Alton . Plus I love how their town always seems to be a heaven for series killers , and the way the author writes about the town makes it sound like its a nice place but not a place I would want to either live or visit. For me this series is also great because I can get lost in the story and set back and just read . |
We are back in Black Rock Falls and for the first time it seems like it’s a village like any other village. Nothing really seems to happen at the moment and normally Jenna and her team don’t know where to start first. They are all a bit bored. It’s not that they want something bad to happen to someone but they feel lost and then all hell breaks loose… An ice cold case that suddenly turns into a red hot one and the author has me in her grip once again. A killer who seems to be as slippery as a bar of soap gives the police force a run for their money and the clock is ticking like a timebomb… Another cracking good story that establishes once more why I like this author so much. This time I must have been extra alert, because I figured out who the culprit was. Two little words made a click in my head and bingo. Woohooo. For once one plus one made two and not three as usual 😉 Already looking forward to the next instalment. 5 stars Thank you, D.K. Hood and Bookouture |
Number 10 in the Kane & Alton series and I honestly think this is the best one yet. What a rollercoaster of a read. The main and sub plots really collide here and the pace never lets up. Three or four suspects are identified with two prominently and it’s a race against time to get enough evidence to charge them. Brilliant characters that feel like you know them personally. Nice to see the newer characters in the series Jo & Carter having bigger roles this time but the pièce de résistance has to be the unveiling of the villain. A brilliant addition to this excellent series |
Promises in the Dark by D.K Hood is the tenth book in this author's Detectives Kane and Alton series. This is another edge-of-your-seat nail-biter with a seriously sick serial killer. This time Detectives Alton and Kane are join the case of FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter. They are desperate and working non-stop to find and stop a serial killer who sets bombs which kill families restrained by him in their homes. Plus the sicko kidnaps and rapes their teenage female family members. The four work tirelessly to track down this madman. I totally enjoyed following along on their investigation. It's always a wild ride investigating serial killers with Jenna Alton and Dave Kane. |
Promise in the Dark is book 10 in the Kane and Alton series and it is explosive...literarily . If you haven’t worked out by now, Black Rock Falls is a serial killer heaven and book 10 doesn’t let up on that front. I love these characters and the town, but I would not want to visit there! Things have been a bit quiet n Black Rock Falls, giving Jenna, Dave and Shane some well needed down time. But that is all about to change when they get a call from their friends at the FBI, asking them to work on a case with them. A house explosion that kills a family starts the hunt for the missing daughter. Once they are able to get inside they see that the family were tied up before the bomb went off. It is the beginning of an actioned packed story, full of action on the hunt of a ruthless killer. But what is is motive? Who is killing families and why.? They have to find the answer to stop him. Once again there is no shortage of bodies and suspense. There is also a personal connection for Dave Kane. A chance for him to find out what happened in his past, something that has haunted him for years. This series is heating up and keeps getting better. Another 5 star read for this crime and thriller junkie. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. |
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced copy of the latest story set in and around Black Rock Falls. This series gets better and better and this latest takes you on one helluva roller coaster of emotions. The action never lets up from the first page to the last. You are immediately engaged in the story and D K Hood has a great ability to literally drag you into the action. I cannot wait for the next in this fantastic series. Totally gripping and a real page turner of a book. 5 stars all the way. |

Wow! This storyline was definitely one of the best by D.K. Hood. I've read all 10 of the Kane/Alton books. Jenna Alton, Wolf and Kane are the best trio ever! I enjoy the these three characters, damaged characters who come from some law enforcement background and are running away from forces out to get payback. Being in Black Falls together helps them keep their sanity and an almost normal life. When a family has been murdered in an explosion in their home, and the three are sent to investigate, they find that the oldest daughter is missing. Jenna understands that time isn't their friend and time can't be wasted. Every corner they find is filled with more questions and more murders. I always wonder how these characters operate without sleep or food! Dang! I get tired just reading about them running here and there with just adrenaline carrying them through. Enjoy going through the maze. I always try to figure out whodunit! And I was right this time, but it took me a long time to figure it out. My question to D.K. Hood: will there be a #11 and will Kane and Alton finally get together? Again, thank you NetGalley and publishers for providing me with AC of this book! |

3.5* gore score 🗡🗡 This is #10 in the Lane and Alton series. This is a new author to me,thanks to Netgalley I am lucky enough to read an arc. What drew my attention was the cover. The book is set in the US in a rural county where Jenna is the Sheriff and Dave her deputy. Both have previous special agency skills that they bring to the job. Jenna and Kane are working with the FBI on a case following a murder with a missing teenage girl. It is a spoiler in the blurb telling us that the body of Sophie woods is found dead, as all the time we are following her abduction we already know the outcome. Not great folks! Love the inclusion of the dogs and their relationship with the owners. Coming into it late in the series I struggled identifying who was who as sometimes referred to by first or other times last name. Not sure about Jenna and Daves relationship they come across as a couple but I don’t think that they are. The pace is good with a lot going on. Although my interest waned at times between 60- 80% It was a good read, I don’t think I’d rush to read the rest of the series. |
I really enjoyed this book all the way through. It had a really good plot, great main characters and really keeps you hooked on the plot. I would highly recommend this book. |

Wow another great read from D. K. Hood. I love all her books and the characters in them are all relatable. It was really great to see Jo and Carter join Kane., Jenna and Wolfe. A great twist at the beginning, and a very tense ending. D K Hood gets better and better with every book she writes. |
The latest installment of this series and wow what a great read. This series always shows such great interpersonal interactions between the main characters and this book is no different. Though you see a different side of Kane and one that shows his broken heart as well as how deep his emotions really go. Kane is more on the edge in this book then I have ever seen him but based on the storyline it doesn't surprise me that he is this close to the edge. Jenna seems more laid back than normally you see. She is the one who is keeping Kane from going further and ruining the life he has made. This book was more emotional for me which isn't really easy and I don't know if it's because for the first time ever I wont be taking part in the blogtour for this amazing book or because the story really got to me. In some ways this feels like a happy ending to the series as all the bad stuff seemed to have come full circle for Kane. I know it's not an end to things but it had a complete ending to me and that makes it all the more emotional. I truly love Kane as a character he is the ultimate protector. He is big and strong and skilled. He also has trust issues which mKe him perfect to watch Jenna's back. Jenna wasn't my most favourite in this book she doesn't seem to be her normal self and seems to take more of a backseat in the case. Wolfe is like normal but you see more of his caring nature and just what he can do. It made it so entertaining especially seeing parts os his past sleeping through. Jo and Carter were a lot of fun and I think would make excellent characters for a main series as they have so much to offer. This was spectacular and I just didn't want it to end. |
Thank you to #Netgalley and #bookouture for the the opportunity to read and review "Promises In The Dark", the latest Detectives Kane and Alton book. Well, here we are at Book #10, and the roller coaster hasn't gotten any slower - and some of the loops are genuinely terrifying. #DKHood has outdone herself this time, in my humble opinion, giving us one of the most disturbing serial killers in recent memory. It's quiet right now in Black Rock Falls, but that's all about to change. In the seemingly quiet town of Louan, there's a mighty explosion, and an entire house is destroyed. Agents Wells and Carter, who we have met in previous books, are called in, along with Zorro the bomb-sniffing dog. So is Shane Wolfe, who is the closest Medical Examiner.. It's been determined that the house was bombed, and that it's not just a house fire. And what they find there is truly gruesome - and the beginning of a spree of murder, kidnapping, rape, and fire. And, when the MO of the killer is discovered, Dave Kane is plunged back into the past and the death of his wife, Annie. It's all he can do - with the help of Jenna Alton - to keep it together while investigating the case; and investigate they do, as they're brought in as FBI consultants. As always, Ms. Hood touches on sensitive topics in the course of her novel - this time it's cult-ish religious groups who seem to have Louan in their grip, which makes it difficult to prosecute any of their suspects in that town. And there are suspects aplenty; it seems there is no end to people in the area who have explosives expertise and, seemingly, motives for the killings. As per usual, the action goes from zero to serial killer in no time at all - and that's just how we readers like it. Black Rock Falls is, of course, the nexus for serial murder and mayhem. Makes one long for a week of speeding tickets and citations for littering! Not. DK Hood has created a group of people who are becoming more and more tight-knit as the books progress: we have the main characters, Jenna Alton (Sheriff) and Dave Kane (Deputy Sheriff), retired Deputy Walters, Deputy Rowley (newly married and looking to improve his position on the force), their trusty dispatcher; Shane Wolfe and his daughter who is working on becoming just as good a Medical Examiner, as well as his other girls and his assistant Penner. And now we've brought in Jo Wells and Carter of the FBI. And don't forget Duke and Zorro! They're instrumental to the case. And, I forgot to mention, Atohi Blackhawk who makes a number of important appearances. Together the group work tirelessly (but with many stops for food and coffee) to solve a series of killings, before things get even worse. And the ending will make you go, "What!" |
This is book #10 of the Kane and Alton series. It can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the series in order for better understanding of the characters backstories. We are back in the serial killer capital of America, Black Rock Falls, and surprisingly it’s been a quiet few month for Sheriff Jenna Alton, Deputy Dave Kane and Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe. We shouldn’t talk too loud though, as when a fireball rips through a house in a nearby town and the occupants are found dead in the kitchen, the FBI are sent to investigate. We again meet Special Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter, who were in the previous book, and they call upon the Sheriff’s team for their help and local knowledge. The storyline is fast paced and full of action, just as I would expect from this author!! I love this series and have read every single book, and the books are all just as gripping as the one before. I knew once I’d started reading it, I wouldn’t be able to put it down until it was finished!! It was great to have this book focus more on my favourite character, Dave Kane. Whilst, if you have read the other books of the series, you know Kane’s background, we get to delve a little deeper! It was heart-breaking to see find out some secrets which he had been keeping, yet exciting to see if they could all work out who was involved in his wife’s murder. The relationship between the Sheriff’s team again was fantastic, but I have to admit there is something about Special Agent Ty Carter which I can’t quite put my finger on!! Hopefully, he will be in future books and I’ll be able to learn to love him as much as I do the other characters!! You certainly can’t deny the relationship he has with his dog Zorro is something else though, and it was great for the two dogs, Zorro and Duke to get some of the action again! The book began strong, with the killer striking the Woods family, and this continued throughout the book with the body count rising! Dare I say it, the author is fantastic at thinking of ways a person can be killed, and if the day job ever dries up at least she knows she will always have a job as a professional killer!! The killer in this book specialised in fire, drones and explosives and it certainly sets your heart racing during these nail-biting scenes, particularly where the Sheriff and her team are involved!! As usual, you are kept guessing as to who the killer is, and there are plenty of suspects to ponder over. I have to say I particularly found the character Roger Suffolk super creepy and felt the same apprehension that Sheriff Alton did every time he appeared! The supporting characters are superb and are written absolutely perfectly into their individual roles, whether being a ‘goodie’ or a ‘baddie’!! I did have an idea as to who the killer may have been quite early on in the storyline, but it certainly didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. The reveal of who and why is held back until very close to the end, and the author again manages to drop the surprise onto you with lots of action and suspense at just the right time! This book has very cleverly tied up some loose ends which have been following the characters throughout the previous books, but also in turn has opened up some new storylines for future books. I loved the ending, particularly for Deputy Rowley, yet a little voice kept telling me “c’mon, this is Black Rock Falls…will we ever get a happy ending?!!!” I can’t wait to read the next book to find out if I’m proved wrong!! Filled to the brim with action and suspense, this book will have you reading into the early hours!! Brilliant read, would definitely recommend!! |
