This was a sweet, cozy read set in Paris. I've always been obsessed with books that feature scenic locations, and Uncoupling by Lorraine Brown was no different. The plotline was unlike anything I've ever read, and in spite of some issues, I enjoyed reading this book through and through. <3

The story was a little slow at the beginning, which made it hard for me to get interested just after I started reading it. But as the story moved on, the plot picked up its momentum. I don't really like characters who let their boyfriends manage every little thing in their lives, be it fictional or in real life - so yeah, I didn't exactly warm up to Hannah, our main character. This is the reason why her character development throughout the story meant so much to me. I loved seeing her finally find her own voice, and find the strength to choose things that made her happy. I could have enjoyed reading about Hannah a lot more if she didn't complain about literally everything, though.

My troubles with connecting with Hannah were fixed with Leo's wonderful character though. I loved him so much. He was the sweetest, and the kindest person ever. I SWOONED. :') The enchanting descriptions of Paris made me mesmerized - it was as if I was on a trip to the city in real life.

If you're a fan of books which center around Europe, definitely pick this one!

Cute read that I finished within 24 hours. "Uncoupling" started a bit stiff and slow - I was not sure I liked where the book was going and what I was reading about (the main heroine lacked any backbone and was ordered around by her stiff boyfriend). But the book very quickly turned into a nice little adventure around Paris, a thoughtful coming-of-age story and a thought-provoking quest of a young woman trying to find her own voice and place in life. Inspiring, if somewhat predictable.

Hannah and Si are on an overnight train from Venice to Amsterdam. Hannah wanders a few carriages ahead to find space to lie out and sleep, little does she know the train splits in the early hours of the morning. Hannah wakes up in Paris whilst her boyfriend is in Amsterdam. Left to fend for herself with no phone and a wedding to get to in a different country, Hannah’s real journey begins. Luckily she has Leo, the handsome local who’s in the same situation. With a day to kill in Paris and Leo as her guide, Hannah sees the tourist spots and all the hidden gems the city has to offer 🇫🇷

I’ve been to Paris several times and like Hannah I’m not a huge fan, HOWEVER, I’m now dying to go back and complete a ‘Hannah and Leo bucket list tour’. The way Lorraine Brown describes these places is absolutely magical and had me hooked from start to finish. I read this book in 24 hours and escaped into it completely. It’s safe to say I was head over heels for Paris and Leo 💕

After I finished I went looking for more of Lorraine’s work and discovered this is her debut! I would highly recommend this book to everyone that loves a romance and I’ll be pre ordering Lorraine’s next book for sure! 📚

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC and huge thanks to Lorraine Brown for writing such a fab book!

Uncoupling is a lovely uncomplicated book which transports you to some wonderful places in Europe, but primarily to romantic Paris. The perfect lockdown read we find ourselves transported to the centre of Paris discovering the sites, the streets and the delicious cuisine.

Hannah and Si find themselves separated after their train ‘uncouples’, one half going to Amsterdam and the other to Paris. Hannah finds herself stranded in Paris with no extra clothes or money. She meets a frenchman at the Station called Léo who helps her out of a very sticky situation. With some time to kill until their train departs to Amsterdam, Léo shows Hannah around Paris on his friend’s motorbike and it is during the course of the day she takes the time to reflect on her life, career and relationship.

The writing is good and in particular the author’s descriptions of Paris are wonderful. Some of the dialogue felt a little bit stilted but generally it flowed well, it’s easy to read and absorbing and I wanted to keep reading to get to the bottom of what Si was up to.

Most of the novel is centred around the main protagonists Hannah and Léo. Whilst Léo is a very likeable character, he’s calm, thoughtful, sensible and his kindness really shines through, I didn’t particularly resonate with Hannah. She’s far too negative and at times I found her extremely frustrating. Here is a character that really needed to let herself go, have fun and embrace the situation instead of grumbling it’s too early for wine and following Léo ‘begrudgingly’ to a wonderful viewpoint. I know the author is trying to get across her insecurities and confidence issues but she came across as unappreciative and a tad ungrateful. I did enjoy reading about Hannah’s passion for photography, this brought her otherwise bland character to life and I liked the scene when she is enthusiastically explaining to Léo how to use her camera, demonstrating her love of photography.

The romance is a bit lack lustre, it’s very innocent and kept to the minimum, presumably because Hannah is still in a relationship. I really would have liked to have seen a bit more chemistry between them, particularly as the story unfolds.

Despite my little niggle with Hannah’s negativity, this is otherwise a delightful debut novel with a lovely and unusual storyline. Located in a fabulous setting, which the author obviously knows well, we are treated to some beautiful and vivid descriptions of the tourist spots as well as some lovely places off the beaten track. The gentle romance unfolds subtly throughout the story and it was lovely for Hannah to find happiness in the end.

Thank you to the publisher, via Netgalley, for my eARC.

So here's the thing. This book was fine.

It gave me second hand anxiety the whole time about missing trains but that's a personal issue clearly!

My main issue with this book is essentially the cheating. Hannah effectively allows herself to fall in love with this guy while knowing she's in a committed relationship with a man she knows is planning on proposing to her. Yes she has her concerns over his fidelity but that doesn't make what she did right.

When it got to the end when it turned out her boyfriend had been sacked and had criminal charges against him I was so lost with how ridiculous it was. One, how selfish do you have to be to have that conversation that at a wedding, could it genuinely not have waited?! But two, really?

Also, you can make it known that a character is French without ending a sentence with non or oui every other sentence. That drove me nuts.

Overall, the book wasn't bad and it was a lovely tale of Paris and exploring it. However, I'd have much preferred it had Hannah not been in a relationship. But that's personal preference.

I really enjoyed reading this lighthearted read. I suppose more so because of the travel element involved in it. I love any book that involves travel, especially when the travelling is done in mainland Europe (I live in the UK, but sadly have never been to mainland Europe, so it's always nice to get lost in a book that includes this and pretend that I'm there with the characters.)

I liked Hannah and Leo, especially since I found myself able to relate to Hannah in some ways.

The book was really well written.

Thank you to NetGalley, Lorraine Brown and Orion Publishing Group for the chance to read this book.

Uncoupling by Lorraine Brown

Uncoupling is a sweet, romantic novel set over one day & three different counties. It’s a little far fetched but do you know what? Who cares? A trip around Paris on the back of a motorbike belonging to a gorgeous French guy? Beautiful weather, delicious French pastries & creamy hot chocolate to die for? A bit of conflict and a nice satisfying ending? Yes please! A lovely little cheerer-upper of a book, perfect for Saturday afternoon sofa reading.

Thanks to NetGalley & to Orion books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Uncoupling is a beautifully romantic book about how when it seems our life is falling apart it is actually rebuilding. Hannah is traveling to a wedding in Amsterdam with her organisation freak boyfriend Si, when they get parted by accident due to a misunderstanding and she ends up stranded in Paris. She is befriended by a fellow traveler who happens to be from Paris who during their wait for the next train shows her the sights of a city she had bad memories of. This is a wonderful, fresh, and reflective read. It is so well written that a plot that could be contrived actually falls into place perfectly.

Hannah and Si are travelling on the overnight train to Amsterdam after celebrating Hannah’s 30th Birthday in Venice. But the train isn’t the romantic adventure they’d hoped, so when Hannah moves seat to find a quieter spot to sleep she ends up waking up in a different place and on a different train to Si. The train split in the night!

Hannah finds herself alone in Paris with very little money and only Leo, the man who caused her to miss the train split announcement, to offer a helping hand.

Hannah is a character with a lot of layers of over thinking and people pleasing which I found very relatable (hi over-thinker, it’s me!) and I loved how her growing friendship with Leo made her see and question some of these flaws. But there’s something more underlying with both characters that neither are willing reveal which keeps you guessing.

I loved all the descriptions of the sights and sounds and smells of Paris, this is a really brilliant book for some armchair travelling while we’re all at home. I really felt like I was their living this wonderful Parisian adventure with Leo which you just can’t beat in a book at the moment!

This is a gentle, slow paced book where you are immersed in everything Parisian and I loved it! So when can I spend the day lost in Paris with Leo please?

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was absolutely hooked into this book, I finished it in 2 days! The story begins with a couple rushing around in a Venice train station to make it on their train to Amsterdam. They eventually make it but their VIP seats have been double booked. As a result, they have to sit in economy and the girlfriend (Hannah) moves away from her boyfriend (Si) into a quieter carriage to get some sleep as her carriage is far too noisy. The next morning, she wakes up to find her boyfriend, but he is missing. She discovers that the carriages separated and hers parted towards Paris. However she was not the only one to do this as a handsome French man also found himself in the same position. Hannah finds this man to be stuck up and blames his loud music for not hearing the announcement. She makes her way to the Gare du Nord to get a train back to Amsterdam in time for her boyfriend’s sister’s wedding and bumps into the French man again. He takes sympathy on her and they end up becoming friends, she agrees to let him show her around Paris as their train is hours away. On their journey, they see all the sights which makes me reminisce my time in Paris and takes loads of pictures. The only problem is she starts falling for him. It was honestly such a cute read and I loved the ending! It provided a great escape for me during this dreary lockdown where I’m missing travelling.

If books can transport you to wherever you want to go while sitting in the comfort of your own home, then I’ve just been on the most magical trip to Paris via this one: Uncoupling by Lorraine Brown

Hannah and Si are on an overnight train travelling to Si’s sister’s wedding in Amsterdam. When the train splits, they find themselves on the way to two different destinations, with Hannah finally disembarking in Paris.

A chance meeting with Leo on the station platform results in her spending the wait for her onward train to Amsterdam sightseeing round the French capital. As she spends more and more time with him, she becomes more reluctant to leave. And since she’s been zipping through the Parisian streets on Leo’s motorbike, stopping multiple times for delicious sounding food and drinks, and taking in all of the beautiful sights, who can blame her??

I found this book to be a nice, easy and romantic read. The story is kind of adorable, and the Parisian vibe made me yearn even more for the day when we are able to go travelling again. I had to suspend disbelief slightly at some of the plot developments but, you know what, I didn’t really care because it’s an adorable, uplifting story.

With thanks to Orion for gifting me a digital copy to review.

Romantic Venice with Si, followed by Amsterdam..what could possibly go wrong for Hannah? A series of errors....and she ends up in Paris, with no phone or money and is rescued by the very French and enigmatic Leo...with hours to spare before she should be with Si in Amsterdam.
A great read....Hannah realises nothing is quite as it seems with her relationship and life..and the tale follows her awakening.
Well written and humorous in places, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Highly recommend.

A romantic break in Venice bookended by a family wedding in Amsterdam. A beautiful train journey from Venice to Amsterdam, perfect. Or it should of been. Confusion over bookings, rowdy passengers and moving seats.
The start of a very different journey. Half the train uncouples and goes to Paris instead of Amsterdam.
Not the disaster it sounds but the start of a new adventure.
A self realisation and a few truths coming to light.
Enjoy the story and keep your fingers crossed for the ending.

This was such a gentle, easy read. Don’t let that put you off. It also makes you think about the person you are with. Do you really know them and are you really happy?
Hannah and Si have been on a city break in venice and are now on a train heading to Si’s sister’s wedding in Amsterdam. Unable to sleep, Hannah heads down the train to find a place to spread out. Earplugs in she settles for a nights sleep. Only trouble is the train splits in the middle of the night. Si is in Amsterdam and she’s in Paris.
Also on the wrong part of the train is Leo. The join together and go on a journey around Paris whilst waiting for a later train to take her to her destination.
Time with Leo makes her look at her relationship with Si. Will they reunite or are they destined to go their separate way.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC

This felt like an easy read bit of escapism. At times I felt like a tourist in Paris and like I was joining Hannah on her journey around the city. I did struggle with her self deprecating nature and disliked Si as a result but that felt less prominent as the story went on.

In the current times this book did feel like you’re on a holiday of your own (we can all wish right?) and it’s outside of the box storyline keeps you gripped.

The novel has Sophie Kinsella vibes, but it is less of a comedy. What it does best is taking us on tour of Paris together with Hannah and Léo (I’ve googled Angelina - because hot chocolate, come on - and whenever I’m next in Paris, that’s where I’m heading first). There were some things that didn’t seem consistent, some things like Hannah mentioning Ellie a couple of times before actually saying who Ellie was (around 20% into the story) or, personally, I couldn’t help wondering why Hannah hadn’t used google maps straight away to figure out her way to Gare du Nord. Romance blossoms between two strangers in less than a day, but as much as I liked Léo and his cool leather jacket, Sylvie, despite her short presence in the story, was my favourite character.

A cute book that focused on travelling, love and showing that sometimes the best adventures are the ones you don't expect! I really liked the premise to the story, and found it fascinating to think something so small such as missing a stop of a train can change the direction of your life completely! I really enjoyed the romance and how it wasn't too fast paced, but instead felt natural as Hannah and Leo got to know each other and find themselves through their day together. It was a very cute romance, and I loved the ending so much!
