…especially if you are about to read Sheryl Browne’s ‘Trust Me’ to be published November 20, 2020.
After moving back to his hometown and partnering with his casanova father in the village surgical office, Dr. Jake Merridan questions whether he’s made the right move. He’s got enough on his plate with two teenagers in the house and a father who is only working part-time on his way to retirement. He doesn’t need his wife second-guessing his every move. Not now.
Patients of the surgery practice are “living in fear of the letterbox flapping” since some have received vile and damaging letters. It’s been brought to his attention that only the medical office would be privy to the confidential information that is so carelessly being delivered to unsuspecting people. Knowing they are under scrutiny, the pressure builds for the staff and Dr. Merridan’s family. When the cracks appear, you’ll be shocked to see how many of them are keeping secrets.
The tagline instantly caught my attention: “You don’t know her. But she knows everything about you.” I knew I was in for a creepy read. The characters in this expertly crafted psychological thriller are real people with flaws and Browne plays on those flaws in her storyline. Everyone has secrets. Nobody’s perfect. Let Browne show you just how many secrets are buried in this quiet village.
Central to the theme is friendship and how well we really know each other, the fragility of trust, the necessity of love and the bitter effects of betrayal. Each is an important thread in this thriller and will leave you contemplating the depth of your emotional investment in relationships.
Browne has a unique way of slowly releasing clues through gossip. Readers begin to doubt patients, staff and family members as the author deftly reveals another clue. I appreciated the subtlety with which Browne shared the clues because it provided an intellectual challenge for me and added to the surprise element. I felt like I was a mouse scurrying away with a huge chunk of cheese every time I realized I’d just read an important clue. Alas, Browne masterfully orchestrates the twists and I didn’t see the ending coming! I loved feeling absolutely fooled by the author. It’s wonderful to close the book and still have loose ends. It ruminates in your mind all day long!
Thank you Sheryl Browne, Bookouture and Netgalley for gifting me this advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
