I was not a fan of the first book in this series but I liked this one.
It's a fast paced and fun read, good world building and character development.
I don't think it can be read as a stand alone as there's some backstory.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This is the second book in the Gunnie Rose series and in my opinion can be read as a stanadlone .

Lizbeth Rose (Gunnie) has hired on with a new Crew - their job to escort a crate on a train journey to Dixie , the self-exiled south East Territory , in the USA . It's a journey that should have been easy , with no problems ............ too easy , for treachery is afoot and the train is ambushed and derailed with the crate then found missing .
With some crew members dead in the ambush , others injured who can she trust ?
Lizbeth decides to go undercover but needs help in this ultra-conservative town - can she trust the appearance of Eli , a Russian Gregoris ? Just what is in the crate that has so many trying to obtain it at
any cost ?

This is a fast paced story with many red herrings and twists and turns .............. who can they trust , will they survive ?

I look forward to reading more by this entertaining Author

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Lizbeth Rose is a Gunnie (gun for hire). She joins a crew to transport a crate to Dixie. When the train is blown up members of the crew end up dead and the crate is stolen. Lizbeth will hook up to Eli a Russian grigoris (magic born) in the town of Sally when they leave much will have changed. This is a strong story with many red herrings. It becomes the survival of the fittest. Part of a series Lizbeth is a strong character who you will want to follow in her journey.
I was given an arc of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

My thanks to Little, Brown Book Group U.K./Piatkus for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘A Longer Fall’ by Charlaine Harris in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second in Harris’ western fantasy series set in an alternative North America and featuring young gunslinger Lizbeth ‘Gunnie’ Rose.

Last summer I enjoyed the first book in the series, ‘An Easy Death’, and so I was looking forward to the UK publication of its sequel. Also, as with the first book, I elected to combine reading the eARC with listening to its audiobook edition, narrated by Barbara Barnes, whose gentle Southern accent was very pleasant.

Lizbeth Rose has been hired onto a new crew that has been tasked with transporting a crate into Dixie, the self-exiled southeast territory of the former United States.

While the protection job seems straightforward, Dixie is a very conservative territory and about the last place Lizbeth wants to visit. Naturally things go wrong as following a train derailment the crate is stolen, leaving a number of her crew wounded and one dead.

Determined to complete the contract, Lizbeth goes undercover with an old friend in order to retrieve the crate and to discover why it is so valuable. However, in order to blend in she has to adopt attire considered appropriate and in Dixie that means dresses, heels, and a purse. She’s not at all happy about this aspect of the assignment.

Again, this proved a highly entertaining read with plenty of action and a streak of dark humour. I was happy about the return of Eli Savarov, the Russian grigori (wizard). Lizbeth’s excursion into Dixie also allowed for an exploration of issues linked to racism and segregation.

Looking ahead I was pleased to see that there will be at least two more upcoming adventures for Gunnie Rose.

I would suggest that the books are best read in order to allow a sense of how this alternative world came into being as well as to provide background on Lizbeth and Eli.

Certainly recommended for those who enjoy western fantasy, strong heroines, and Harris’ unique style.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

This is the second book in the series and I was hoping to read it as a standalone , unfortunately the author's writing style throws you straight into the action and I couldn't work out what was going on. I couldn't get into the storyline and only managed to read the first few chapters. I DNF , I need to start from the beginning book to get a feel for the characters. I will come back to this tutle and try it again at a later date. I loved the author's previous series so it has nothing to do with her style of writing .

The second installment in Charlaine Harris's new series features gunslingers, magic, a different America and enemies at every turn. Transporting a mysterious box across statelines with a new crew Gunner find herself in an unknown place, with no idea to trust and someone she thought she would never see again by her side. It's unique and pretty darn cool and I really enjoyed every minute even though I have not read the first one. I did not find it hard to follow and caught up before I even knew it and feel pretty invested in these kick a.. characters! I cannot wait for more Gunnie Rose and her awesome gunslinger ways!

I love Harris' books and this was no different. It was such fun to read this book. It's set in an alternative America where magic exists but despised. I loved it. The writing was very addictive, the world and characters she created were amazing.
Thanks a lot to NG and the publisher for this copy.
