I enjoyed this slow burn thriller.

This is the first book that I have read in a while (maybe ever) that I wasn't rooting for one particular character. I disliked Joe from the very beginning.
I liked that every character was flawed and a little unlikable. It honestly added to the suspense for me. I had no idea who was going to do what or what each character was capable of.

I do think some scenes seemed a little far-fetched.

I thought I knew what was going on the entire time but the end surprised me.

Pretty creepy. I enjoyed getting to “know” the characters through their different chapters. Didn’t really like any of them but I did want to find out what was going to happen. There was definitely a lot of secrets going on as well as an underlying current of uneasiness.

This one starts out intriguingly, then continues with a very slow pace, where both couples gather at a house after a strange encounter. The final pages are where all the action happens, I wouldn’t say there’s a twist at the end though - more of a satisfying conclusion.

Every year Maggie and Brad spend their vacation at the same lakeside house at Lake Tahoe. They enjoyed the downtime, away from busy schedules to enjoy each other's company and the beautiful surroundings. This year however it starts slightly differently when, on the first night, they meet Joe and Skye and invite them to stay. It soon becomes apparent that their new houseguests are not what they seem. As the couples spend time together they begin to discover more about each other, which leads to a dramatic storyline where they take actions that will live with them for the rest of their lives.

At first, I wasn't too sure about this book, I felt the storyline was a little far fetched but as the story unfolded, I got to know more about each character and the brilliance of Grant’s writing began to shine through. I enjoyed this book immensely, the plot was very well written, it was gripping and kept me engaged throughout. I highly recommend this title to any reader who enjoys the thriller genre.

Many thanks to Inkubator Books and NetGalley UK for the review copy.

I received this book in exchange for a honest review. Thank you NetGalley.
I will admit this one started slow and I wasn’t sure what to think. Brad and Maggie meet Skye and Joe at Lake Tahoe while they both seem to be on vacation.
With a strange turn of events Joe and Skye are invited to stay in their lake home even though Brad isn’t really very keen to the idea. A friendship begins and with many twists and turns and where I think I know where the book is going BOOM another bomb drops but that isn’t all. Y’all will have to keep reading. This one I couldn’t put down!
Now we need a book 2 or do we?!

Maggie and Brad are a married couple who are on their annual holiday to Lake Tahoe whilst out they meet another couple Skye and Joe who they get on with very well. Unbeknown to them they are con artists looking for their next victims and they have their prey in sight!!

Maggie and Brad invite them to stay in their stunning lakeside rental when the other couples accommodation falls through. At this point I’m screaming out no!!

Maggie has a secret which will leave her vulnerable to blackmail. a secret that will shatter her marriage and she will do anything to stop it being revealed.

There are so many twists and turns along this amazing journey and the ending did make me stop and think about it!

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

I’ve read Grant’s Guest prior to this and my limited expectations for that book was met, so I didn’t expect much out of this one either, but knew it probably wasn’t going to be terrible. Sure enough, expectations met once again, in fact even somewhat exceeded. I’d say going by the limited sample of these two books, Grant is improving as an author, something you don’t often encounter in the middle tiers of the ever so popular thriller genre, so kudos.
This is yet again a story of a marriage that hits some snags, stumbles and then tumbles, in fact this is a story of two relationships, the main couple of the seemingly happily wedded Maggie and Brad, the well to do designer and relationship shrink duo, who shuffle off for a vacation in Lake Tahoe to rekindle the flickering flame of their passion. There they meet Joe and Skye, a wildly charismatic younger couple who finagle the encounter into an invitation to stay. At first it seems like a good idea, having other people around would take the pressure off dealing with their marital snafus, etc. but in a few days or so the guests really do start to stink just like the proverbial seafood and soon enough Maggie and Brad find out just how impossible it is to get something resembling peace of mind with the other couple around.
And, of course, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that Joe and Skye are professional con artists, who had more than friendship on their mind in befriending Maggie and Brad.
Despite all the manipulation and mild suspense and the genre standards like split narrative and the ending plot twists, this read very much like a relationship drama with some thriller seasonings thrown in the pot. And it actually was fairly effective as such. Tolstoy was right, after all, no unhappy relationship is alike, and the two in this book cover the gamut from cheating to lying to manipulating to, possibly, murder, with the grass that always seems irresistibly greener on the proverbial other side.
The characters weren’t especially likeable as such, Skye seemed too childlike, Joe too scummy, Maggie too…something, self important? not sure. too defined by her affair and her efforts to justify it?, Brad too hypocritical. None are all that interesting or engaging as individuals, but thrown together they produced a surprisingly compelling read. Plus one of them has a surprise in store, something that’ll spin the plot around in the final chapter.
So yeah, not sure if this was the case of perfectly adjusted expectations or what, but this was actually ok, not at all intelligence insulting and read very, very quickly. Which is pretty good for a Read Now Netgalley thriller. There was a very realistic quality to the situations and dialogue, despite the far fetched aspect of the scenarios, kinda sold it. Besides, it’s infinitely cheaper and logistically more feasible than a vacation in Lake Tahoe. So yeah, fairly entertaining if you don’t expect the stars and the moon. Thanks Netgalley.

The story and the plot are good but the narrative is prolonged and boring and just filling pages at times. All the characters are shallow which makes it difficult to connect. The final twist is good but the events need some suspension of belief. Overall an okay read. 3.5 stars

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. I did not like any of the characters; the story was predictable and dragged a lot, way too long. If I liked anyone it might have been better but I couldn't find one person that I cared about. Almost DNF, but I kept hoping for something better.
2.5 rounded up because the location descriptions were beautiful

I would describe this as an average thriller. Not super great but not bad either.

I enjoyed the premise of a couple crashing another couple’s vacation for a con. I almost wish there would have been more of a romance between Maggie, Brad and Skye. I feel like that would have taken it to the next level.

I enjoyed the ending, even though I’m sure some people did not as it wasn’t the picture perfect ending.

I would recommend this a quick, easy read.

What a freaking page turner. First how do you even end up in a situation where you invite complete strangers to stay with you?? But then things get very very weird. A page turning con story at its best. Literally did not see the end coming. At all. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was excellent. “The Other Couple” by Cathryn Grant was a great read. Although, I felt it was a bit long winded and slow at the beginning, it surely made up for its slow start in the end. It was like watching a thriller. Fantastic characters and great plot. Loved it! Highly recommend it. It had me on the edge of my seat.

This was an enjoyable and easy read. I especially liked the authors writing style. The story didn’t have a whole lot of surprising twists, the ending was easily guessed as well as what happened to Joe when they didn’t find his body.

This book was what I like to call a “relaxing read”. It doesn’t have you on the edge of your seat, or scared, rather a satisfying story to quench your boredom or help you relax at night before bed.

I would recommend this book, and I would be interested in reading more books by this author.

A perfect vacation turns murderous in Cathryn Grant's The Other Couple. I found this book to be thrilling, easy to read and surprised by all of the twists and turns.

Skye and Joe are in Lake Tahoe to run a con - their normal business - they'll befriend another couple and mooch off of them for a lovely vacation, good food and fine drinks for a week or so. They spot Brad and Maggie and think they have met the perfect couple to bamboozle.

Brad and Maggie are on a Lake Tahoe vacation with a goal to get back in sync - at least that's Brad's goal, Maggie just wants to avoid the heavy conversations with Brad. She has secrets she's hiding from him. When they meet Skye and Joe she is happy to invite them to hang out so she can avoid too much alone time with Brad. Her husband is starting to suspect that something is really wrong with their marriage.

Skye and Joe make themselves at home with Maggie and Brad, but they aren't always wanted. When Joe finds out secrets Maggie is keeping, how far will the couples go to hide who they really are to each other and even their own significant others?

Readers won't want to put this book down and they will enjoy the multiple points of view from Brad, Maggie, Skye and Joe. This book is full of marital and friendship tension that will leave readers wanting more. Great book. I read Ms. Grant's book The Assistant this year and liked that one very much, too.

Not a bad read, but not my favourite. I kind of saw where this was going fairly on, which isn't really a major problem and sometimes plots revolve around that premise, building on it and crafting a tale of misdeeds and murder around it. In this case, it wasn't by design, but something was off from the start, and itvwasnt the sillyness of Skye nor the moodiness of Joe - after all, this scenario appears quite plausible, and I have to wonder how many times it has indeed occured, or some version of it.

The real problem is that I could not connect on any level with any of the characters. Joe and Skye, while unlikeable, due to their very nature, were shallow and indistint, sort of like bad actors playing a part. Maggie was wishy-washy and Brad insipid, Either be truly wicked, or have a kernel of goodness that makes the reader root for you, I didnt care much or feel much either way, Having said tgat, the story moved along quickly and was an easy read, and honestly I've read worse. But it needed work,

Many thanks to Cathryn Grant, Inkubator and Net Galley for my ARC.

I liked that there were a few twists in this story, but I had a hard time really getting into this book. Maybe because most of the characters were unlikeable and the plot was hard to believe in parts.

Well, I was hoping this one was going to be good but unfortunately I just couldn't get into this story at all. I really tried but it just wasn't one that got my interest.
