God's War by Kameron Hurley is book one in the Bel Dame Apocrypha series. It is the second science-fiction, fantasy book of Hurley's I've read this year. As I expect from Hurley this book is crammed full of magnificent world building. She creates a place based on the middle earth that is both recognisable and magical. This novel goes to some dark places at times but that didn't bother me, however it did drag in a few sections and I did find myself skim reading in the less interesting parts. Nyx is a cold protagonist which I liked, she doesn't want to be your best friend which suited me fine. My big issue with this book is the same in the other work I have read from Hurley and that is the gender politics. I consider myself a feminist, equality is something that is really important to me and God's War is no doubt a feminist book. But, again, Hurley's representation of feminism here is less about equality and more about changing places. Her worlds are female dominant, and males are treated unequally. I don't like that take on the subject to be honest.
