This is a fun and creepy horror anthology! It's perfect for the upcoming autumn months. The authors keep each story short and sweet, not giving too many details, which makes it a lot scarier for me personally.

My favourites were;

Best Friends Forever by Renee Thomasin
Posts by Tanya Pell
We Don’t Go In The Howard’s House by William Sterling
Booger Sugar by Clay McLeod Chapman
You’re Never Too Old For Halloween by Brian McAuley

I’ve always seen people say this anthology was AI, like come on. Have you never read Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman?! 👀

Thank you to Netgalley for my ARC.

This was a fun attempt to recapture the essence of 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark'. While most of the stories don't give that particular nostalgic vibe, it is a decent collection. There are a few misses, and there is nothing particularly groundbreaking, but overall, it was still an entertaining read.

If you are looking for some spooky Halloween short stories this October, then give it a go. 3.5⭐️

Atmospheric collection that really leans into its title. Like most books like this, some stories shine brighter than others, but the best ones capture that delicious mix of unease and curiosity that keeps you turning the pages. There’s a strong campfire or candle-lit vibe to the writing perfect for late nights when you want something eerie but not too heavy. While a few tales felt a little weaker, the overall collection delivers a satisfying variety of chills, making it a great choice for anyone who enjoys short, spooky reads.

Raise your hand if you were personally victimized by Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark at a formative age 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

I remember reading them in the third or fourth grade and being absolutely WIGGED TF OUT! I decided if I had to suffer, so do y’all, and I included three of the illustrations from the books that really got to me back then (and lowkey still do) 💀

As soon as I saw the cover for Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night, I knew I wanted to read it because it gives the exact same energy as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark! I literally got approved for this book yesterday and ALREADY finished it because I enjoyed it so much! (Thankfully there are no scary illustrations though!!!!!) This was a five star read — a perfect collection of short scary stories. My literal only regret was that I didn’t wait until spooky season to read it! This unlocked such a fun nostalgia, I highly recommend!

This releases just in time for spooky season — September 16, 2025 🎃 👻

Thank you @netgalley for the chance to read and review this one!

Halloween isn't just one night of the year, it's a lifestyle! Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night features short and spooky stories that are entertaining and easy reads. My personal favorites included Booger Sugar, a tale where a father trying to scare his son receives an unexpected scare of his own and The Panthera Project, a short story of a mother and daughter, a genetically modified feline and the adventure of a lifetime. I really enjoyed the variety of short stories that this book contained and liked that there is at least one story in this collection that will resonate with the reader. Stephanie Rose and William Sterling did a great job compiling these spooky tales and I would highly consider reading another collection of short stories compiled by them!

A collection of fascinating short stories that pack a punch. They are entertaining, wildly so, and features writers both known and not so known. Definitely reminded of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and it's a perfect fall read.

4.5 stars rounded up for the nostalgia

This collection was such a nostalgic treat! If you grew up in the ’80s like I did, you probably remember teachers pulling out Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark around Halloween (the '80s, am I right?) Those wonderfully creepy tales that stuck with you long after October was over, Twisted Tales to Tell in the Night feels like a modern update to that tradition.

Each story captures that same spirit of childhood fear and wonder, with kids facing all sorts of eerie predicaments on Halloween night. Some stories land stronger than others (as is always the case in an anthology), but they’re all fun, spooky, and perfect for the season. Especially for those of us that are actively choosing to no longer participate in summer despite it still being August.

For me, this book was pure nostalgic joy, a reminder of how magical and spine tingling Halloween felt as a kid, now reimagined for a new generation of readers.

Many thanks to NetGalley, all of the participating authors, and Death by TBR Books for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

I was hoping for some spooky Halloween stories, something that would remind me of 90s kids horror shows (either Goosebumps or Are You Afraid Of The Dark) or classic 80s/90s horror flicks. Unfortunately, only two stories from this collection gave off those vibes.

-"All Harrows' Eve" by Jeff C. Carter
A ragtag group of trick or treating friends decide to celebrate Halloween, despite what has happened to them in the past. Will this be just a boring Halloween celebration, or something more?
Wanted it to be a little longer, and spend more time with the characters, but it had enough of a spooky vibe.

-"Morgana Macabre's Halloween Special" by Wendy Dalrymple
This was SO good. Jennifer and Amanda are getting ready to celebrate Halloween, by spending it at home and watching their favorite late night horror hostess (I think it's obvious who Morgana is based on). Probably the best story in the collection.

The rest of the stories vary wildly in tone, but most just felt incomplete. Abrupt endings, so-so to weak characterization, plots that didn't make sense, etc.

The cover alone brings back memories of reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark under my sheets with a flashlight when I was little. An entire anthology dedicated to all things spooky and Halloween makes for the perfect read for the fall. The stories range in plot from slashers to ghosts and demons and even some silly reads like Booger Sugar. Favorites were Booger Sugar (very original!), Best Friends Forever, Witch Apothecary, Last Requests, and You’re Never Too Old for Halloween.

As a kid who grew up with Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark, this book didn't quite live up to that potential. There were a few decent ones in this collection, but none I feel I will be thinking about 30+ years later like I still do with the source material.

**Thank you to NetGalley, Stephanie Rose, William Sterling and Death by TBR Books for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Twisted Tales to Tell In the Dark was a great book full of short stories. I was super excited to be able to read this book. I can say that this book did not disappoint. As someone who grew up with Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark and shows like Who’s Afraid of the Dark, this brought me back to my younger years. I especially loved the well thought out playlist to go along with the book. I appreciated each and every story.

This was a fun read!
Very nostalgic If you are a fan of Scary Stories to tell in the Dark. Although I felt as some stories felt incomplete and didnt have much development. I still very much enjoyed this for what it is.

If you grew up on Are you afraid of the dark, you will love these short scary spooky tales. It took me back to my childhood and I will probably read some of them to my kids just to pass it down especially with spooky season coming up.

As soon as I read the wonderful Editor's Note at the beginning of this book, my first thought was "I have found my people!!". Then once I read a reference to Mr. Bones candy in the very first story, that opinion was solidified haha
This is a Horror anthology that tries to be in the same vein as the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, and succeeds in that through cover art alone, seriously, which is fantastic. The stories themselves are great too, with only one that fell a little flat for me and I had to stop reading because it was a little -too- nonsensical. But with anthologies, it's almost always a mixed bag, and to be near perfect? Is more than I could ask for. Probably the best book of this type I have read in a great long while... Most of the stories were easy to get in to and I was a little sad when some of them finished, because I wished they were longer.
Spooky, sometimes grisly, always entertaining. A terrific Halloween compilation.

Thank you NetGalley, as this was my first ARC ever! On the cover alone I had such high hopes. Blame it on the nostalgia of growing up with Alvin Schwartz and the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark anthology!

Now for the bad… Perhaps I’m just “too old” for the targeted audience, but the cover is where any kind of similarity and nostalgia ends. I feel like the stories were all too short, and just not very well developed at all. The first one still bothers me because it made NO sense at all. And unfortunately, it set the tone for the rest of the book. Don’t judge a book by its cover is real; I had such high hopes, and felt defeated after.

Sure, each of the stories are incredibly short and to the point, much like Schwartz’s anthologies, but these didn’t feel nearly as developed overall, and I just can’t see how anyone was genuinely scared by anything they read! Like, if they thought THIS was scary, did they ever even read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?!?! Like, THOSE stories remain with me today and still haunt me! Most of these unfortunately were quite forgettable.

I’d give it 2.5 ⭐️ for effort, which rounds up to a 3, but it just wasn’t for me.

This short story collection was so nostalgic for me as I loved spooky stories from authors like R.L. Stine as a kid. It transported me back to my childhood but with a more adult twist this time. I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and look forward to picking it back up during the Halloween season or when I just need a little spook in my life!

Subpar collection of Halloween stories trying to use the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark like cover to get you looking and hoping for something halfway decent. This ain't it bud.

I was expecting stories that were a bit more mature in nature, but this was not unsatisfying. This is a great anthology for young teens. It's mysterious, not too frightening or gory, and just scary enough to give them a bit of a shiver. Its obvious that this wants to sit in place of the old classic, by Alvin Schwartz, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and it does a fair job of it. The stories are darker than R. L. Stine and more like Darren Shan levels of darkness.

Ultimately, I did enjoy some of the stories, but as an Old Professional Horror Fiction Fan, these weren't really scary enough for me, However, if were 30 years younger, this would definitely have gone on a favorites list ,and I will recommend it to the young horror fans I know.
