In Safe with me by K.L Slater you meet Anna, a woman with a troubled past living alone in her family home. One day she witnesses an accident that brings that past right back into the present that starts a chain of events that at times you would not have predicted. When you meet Anna she has witnessed a collision between a car and a motorbike. When the driver of the car gets out Anna is absolutely sure that the person is the one she holds responsible for turning her whole life upside down when she was a child. In her pursuit to bring this person to the justice she believes did not happen she befriends the bike rider and tries to make herself indispensable to both him and his elderly grandmother that he lives with. In doing this she starts to neglect her job which then puts her in the firing line of her employers who start investigating her. I have to say this is where it all got a bit much for me as it just seemed to be very busy and full of characters that did nothing to enhance the book. The story goes between the events of 13 years ago and the present so that the reader understands what is driving Anna in her quest for revenge. In this quest however it does make her blind to those around her who may not have her best interests at heart. It was not until the end of the book that the prologue made any sense to me as what I thought it referred to it didn’t. With the exception of Carla, who I did feel sorry for especially at the end when you find out the truth, I could not really warm to any of the characters. At first I did feel sorry for Anna and what she had gone through in the past but to be honest by the end of the book I just thought she was slightly unhinged. My other issue with the book was that in spending so much time setting the scene in both the past and present the end just seemed all a bit rushed with only one person being punished for what they had done. I know that a lot of readers really loved this book, and while I didn’t hate it I can’t say that I absolutely loved it either. For me it was just ok. But that in itself is the joy of books…not everyone will like the same thing. Although it was not my most favourite read I will admit that the characters were well written and at no point did I think that I would not finish it as I did want to see what would happen to Anna, Carla and Liam. |
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to have read this great debut!! loved this debut novel by K.L Slater! The novel was well build from beginning to the end through the eyes of Anna whom I think had some psychological problems that hasn't been surfaced yet...... It was really a great read and worth your effort. |
When Anna was a child, something terrible happened and destroyed her family. Anna has always laid the blame for that horrific event at the feet of a single person: Carla Bevin. Thirteen years later, Anna is leading a boringly routine life and having difficulties at work, her only friend her elderly neighbor, when she is witness to a car-motorcycle accident. She is enraged when she recognizes the driver as Carla, who calls herself Amanda Danson. Anna is determined to make her pay for what she did to her family, and manages to ingratiate herself with Liam—the injured motorcyclist—and his grandmother, Ivy, in order to keep tabs on the police investigation. Anna’s obsession with Amanda, and the need for revenge drives her to do whatever it takes to protect Liam from Amanda. But who really needs protection—and from whom? This is not a book to be read while half-asleep. Told from multiple POVs, with scenes taking place in the past as well as the present, you can easily get confused about who did what, when they did it, and why. I certainly did, so much so that I started and stopped reading it a couple of times before I finally got serious and paid attention… otherwise known as NOT reading while I was half-asleep. (It’s amazing how much your reading comprehension improves when you can actually concentrate on the words you’re looking at…) If ever a character ran me through the full gamut of emotions, it was Anna. There were times early on that I thought she was quite possibly the most uninteresting character I’ve ever read in my life. Ah, but those first impressions aren’t always to be trusted! Anna was actually a character of surprising depth. Once I knew all the details of what shaped Anna into who she was, everything she said and did made perfect sense to me. Huge kudos to Slater for creating such an intricate character! All was definitely not as it seemed in this deliciously convoluted story, and I absolutely LOVED that. K.L. Slater definitely has a fan in me. I can’t wait to read more of her work! (Can convoluted be used in a complimentary way? I hope so, because that’s how I meant it!) |
Safe With Me This book was uncomfortable and a little bit strange. I found it hard to really like any of the characters. What kept me coming back was the desire to find out the truth about them all, dipping into their pasts little by little as the story unravels. A fairly enjoyable read, but it didn't blow my socks off. I was kindly sent a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. |
I really enjoyed reading this book - it kept me engrossed, and guessing, all the way though. I'm looking forward to reading more by KL Slater in the future. |
Thank you netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. I liked the book and the premise, but found the ending lacking something. I have been reading a lot of psychological thrillers lately, and while I have read some amazing ones, I just felt that this wasn't the best I have read lately. I found the main character to be dark and creepy, I liked that, lol, but I found some of her choices to be odd and left me wondering why as they didn't seem logical. I found sometimes the story dragged on and I was hoping for more of a shock, more to delve into. That being said, I thought the book was very well written and characters laid out well. It just wasn't my favourite book in this genre. |

This is a modern thriller. The plot was easy enough to follow and there were a lot of interesting characters. The main character is Anna, a thirty something, single, loaner, who is a Postman. She witness's a car accident and becomes obsessed with Liam the motorbike victim, believing that they are in a relationship. Anna's world starts to crumble about her as she loses control of her perfectly routine life and past memories surface. Can she gain control? |

Unfortunately I really struggled to find the suspense in this novel. Anna, the central character was not a character that enabled you to sympathize with her, and I found the whole story rather rambled along to its inevitable climax. Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend this as a good read. |
Can you see me, standing alone on my island of discontent, waving halfheartedly from the shore? Yup, here I am, once again . . . in the minority. I was sure the overwhelmingly positive reviews I’ve seen for this author’s work and the blurb couldn’t be wrong - this was going to be a creeptastic read. One I would revel in or heck, even just enjoy. Turns out . . . not so much. “Let’s face it, some people are just weird and there’s no logic behind it.” I think we all know by now, the same can be said about books and the characters that inhabit them. This story was riddled with weird characters and the narrator, Anna, was the worst of the bunch. I’m all for an unreliable narrator, but there still has to be something about that character I connect with or that’s even interesting on some level. For me, Anna’s character crossed the line from creepy in an interesting and suspenseful way, to creepy in a awkward and pitiful way. Being in her head was icky and uncomfortable. There was no enjoyment in trying to understand her downward spiral of delusions. Anna is the sole witness in an accident involving a woman in a car, hitting a man on a motorcycle, and it seriously messes with her head. The woman driving the car happens to be the person she holds responsible for the destruction of her own family thirteen years earlier. The very person that disappeared and changed her identity after that tragic night. In an effort to keep tabs on this mystery woman, Anna tries to befriend the man on the motorcycle, relentlessly inserting herself in his life. The storyline itself was interesting enough, it was the execution and feel that was off for me. Nothing irks me more than suspense being carried out with situations that are glossed over or conversations where one character doesn’t provide an answer, but instead storms off in a dramatic way. It’s a plot device that feels cheap to me and it was used a lot in this story. When it all boils down to it, there were some twists, thrown in at the end, but again, the way it all came together didn’t work for me. Essentially the author tried to pull the wool over my eyes, but she failed. The major thing that Anna first ‘uncovered’ mid-story made the direction of things so obvious. And that ending . . . nope. Not impressed. And seriously, what was that smell? I still can’t figure that one out. |
I only have one word for this book..... WOW. I loved it. A great psychological thriller that draws you in from the first few pages. Another fab book that I have struggled to put down. I wish I could give more than 5 stars as it was fab. |
What a wild and crazy ride. Really crazy!! Anna is one sick puppy and unfortunately she is not alone. I ended up shaking my head at Anna's whole thought process. This made for an interesting read with an ending you won't see coming. |

Although the first 80% of this book was pretty slow and had trouble with progressing, the author really had some great twists which for me makes the book easier to read and more intriguing. I don't think the author did a good job on the character Ana, as I did not find her very easy to relate with or like, which is one thing I find Important in reading. Overall, it's a decent read, especially if you enjoy twists and turns me unexpected thrills. |
SAFE WITH ME is a gripping psychological thriller by a debut author, KL Slater with very disturbing characters and creepy scenes. |

"It always amazes me how it so easy to appear one way to the people around you but to live inside as someone else entirely." Anna's life is a mess she's fallen behind at her job at the post office and is hoarding mail and is obsessed with her brother's death. When she comes upon a hit and run accident the victim resembles her brother and she becomes obsessed with taking care of him but is he who she thinks he is? This book had an unrealistic storyline but it still managed to draw me in and made me want to know what happens next. |
I really liked this story. It started off slow, but quickly speeded up as I got into the book. The story follows the character, Anna, who witnesses a terrible accident. Anna, we find out, has a bad past with one of the victims and sets out to get revenge on that person by trying to get close to the other victim. She soon becomes obsessed with the person she had a bad past with and the other accident victim and falls into a vicious cycle of obsession. I think this book is realistic because the plot is something I could actually see happening in real life. I would recommend this book to any thriller lover. |
Set in Nottingham and featuring an unreliable narrator, this is a great story that made me feel uncomfortable at times and also made me talk to my kindle and my brothers dog as different pieces of the puzzle were discovered and I knew the characters couldn't hear me. The dog thinks I'm insane but my kindle never judges me. Really good book and I look forward to the next book from K.L. Slater. |
I really enjoyed Safe With Me. It was well written, easy to read and compelling. The prologue was intriguing and the first chapter threw me straight into the action, raising loads of questions. I like a book with multiple viewpoints and I enjoyed slowly uncovering the layers of the central and connected mysteries. It was pretty tense in places and I was gripped throughout. I really felt for Anna - her suffering felt very real - and I found the end quite touching. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. |

Safe With Me was definitely an interesting read for me. It follows a woman, Anna, who witnesses a road incident and recognizes one of the parties involved as the person who ruined her life thirteen years ago. Finding the perfect opportunity for revenge, she befriends Liam, a man who was injured in the accident, in order to get a front row seat to the police investigation into her adversary. However, as most psychological thrillers go, not everything, or everyone, is as they seem. To be honest, I can't tell if I actually enjoyed reading it or just wanted to stick through it until the reveal. I'm a big fan of psychological thrillers, and was excited to find one with a different kind of main character. Anna, who we follow the majority of the novel, is awkward, strange, and the very definition of an unreliable narrator. However, more often than not, I found her to be annoying and unreasonable, and I didn't quite buy her insanity. She wasn't subtle enough to be an exciting, scary character, nor was she sympathetic enough to justify any of her actions. She was just crazy and extremely unlikable. She also kept hinting at a great revenge against the person who ruined her life, but it was never quite clear what exactly her end goal was. I did like the constant shifts in point of view- jumping from Carla, a school psychologist thirteen years ago, to Anna in the present, and to other more minor characters who pop up to share their view of the story. It made Anna's sanity, or lack of it, stand out more. The climax felt rushed, although I did enjoy the reveals and the twists, and I felt like it ended a bit abruptly. In all, I would say it was an enjoyable read. |
A great physiological thriller with a lovely twist at the end, the real last page twist, which I loved. The writing flowed easily, making it a joy to read with the heroine Anna being. a postie,, making the book fell like real life, not just made up. The book focuses on both the present day and thirteen years ago and tells the story from several view points. Well worth a read. |
