Description
So You Want to Be a Frogman is not your garden-variety combat-themed account written by a former Navy SEAL turned author. It is not a guide for how to get in shape, nor does it address guidelines for training or principles of leadership utilized within the Special Forces community.
Instead, Thomas Mixon offers a light-hearted, self-deprecating, satirical examination of his life in the form of a series of stories that describe various events starting from an early age and continuing through adulthood. Have you ever imagined what it would be like to party with a full-fledged, exceedingly handsome, slightly corrupt Navy SEAL and a group of his buddies?
Do the next best thing: Read about it.

This was a really well written historical nonfiction book, it had that feel that I was looking for and thought worked in telling a interesting story. Tom Mixon was able to weave a strong tale and had that research element that I was looking for and enjoyed getting into this piece of history.

Now you would think that a US Navy SEAL would write about their heroic actions under fire on super dangerous mission, but this SEAL has written a book about those times when not in combat but in more relaxed times, and I can honestly say the book is superb, it really did make me laugh out loud and took me back to the good ole days of a rather less PC version of the world.
The stories of the authors down time with his colleagues in the SEALs makes excellent reading, and it really does show that Special Forces really are special for a variety of reasons!
I thought the book was hilarious, a real pleasure to read and a book I found hard to put down, I read it in two sittings.
If you are on holiday or want a relaxing read then get this book, its brilliant!
I would love the author to do another book but on his combat missions, but I guess those are classified.
This isn’t your typical “how I became a Navy SEAL” story — and that’s exactly what makes it stand out. Tom Mixon takes readers from his early years through the grit and grind of BUD/S training and life in the Teams, with a mix of raw honesty and unexpected humor.
What shines most is his voice — authentic, humble, and full of personality. You can feel the saltwater, the sweat, and the camaraderie in every story. Mixon doesn’t just tell war stories; he paints vivid moments that pull you right in. The pacing is smooth, never rushed, and the blend of humor and heart keeps it human.
This one is not your run of the mill story about how someone became a SEAL. In So You Want To Be A Frogman by Tom Mixon you get some glimpses of his early years growing up and we follow him through some significant events through his life into BUDs and the teams and some events after that. it's all told with a lot of humor and candor. If you want detailed information about how to become a frogman or how it is to be a frogman, then maybe this isn't the first thing you should read. I had a good time reading this one and I must thank Netgalley and Koehler Books for giving me an advance copy.

The author takes you through his life leading up to how he enlisted, and of course, if you are going to be in the Navy, it is going to be in the SEALs. Everything about him, from his childhood and leading up to joining the Navy, was exactly the way you would have him showing up on the first day and being yelled at, not just for the way he looked, but also for how he dirtied the Deck when he showed up. The book is very different than other military or even Sea, books and that is what made this book a fun and very fast read. This is very much a book that is worth the read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Köehler Books and Tom Mixon for sharing this ARC with me, in exchange for my honest review.
I love the introduction that Mr. Tom gave, wasn't the usual. As an Army Veteran, I was looking forward to reading this as soon as I got the approval. I just love a military book where the author has been there and done that, instead of making it up as he goes. Mr. Tom realed me in from the very beginning and kept me hooked until the end. The stories Mr. Tom painted in my head at times had me feeling like I was right there with him. The flow of each chapter was awesome, it never felt rushed. I have always admired and looked up to the SEALs. With everything they go through in BUDs to everything in their missions, I'm like Oh My Wow LOL!!
I highly recommend this book to everyone.
