Description
When grief feels overwhelming, You Know I'm Here reminds children that love endures beyond death—and they are never alone.
This moving poem, written from the perspective of a mother who has passed away, offers children a gentle, honest way to understand grief and death. Through lyrical verses that speak directly to a child's heart, You Know I'm Here affirms that the bond between loved ones transcends physical separation with words like, "I'm never far away—I'm in your thoughts, your hopes, your heart.”
Born from a profound personal experience, author Jon Reider lost his own mother, Myra, when he was just three years old. That childhood loss, and the silence that so often surrounds grief, inspired him to create both this book and the Myra's Kids Foundation—a nonprofit organization committed to ensuring no child grieves alone.
You Know I'm Here began as a poem read aloud each summer at Myra's Kids annual grief camp. Each year, the children release glowing lanterns onto the water's surface under a canopy of stars at the camp's sacred lantern ceremony, where earth and sky connect, and children feel the presence of those they've lost.
Then, in the tender moments when stars illuminate the night sky and lanterns set adrift on still waters, Jon's voice speaks the words every grieving child longs to hear: "You know I'm here."
Whether read in quiet remembrance or shared between caregivers and children navigating the concept or experience of loss together, You Know I'm Here offers a comforting embrace through words. It reassures children that their loved ones remain present in memories, in moments of joy and in the quiet spaces between heartbeats.
All proceeds from each book sold supports the continued work of Myra's Kids Foundation, helping more children find their voice in grief through free year-round support programs and summer camps where they can meet other children sharing similar experiences in a safe and nurturing environment.
For every child who has experienced loss, this book is a lantern in the darkness—a reminder that they are never alone.
