I just couldn't get into this book and didn't finish it. It just wasn't my cup of tea!

This book gripped me from the beginning. It's a wonderful story about sacrifice, love and finding yourself. The main character, Marianne, is a 60 year old woman who has plodded along for many years in a very unhappy marriage and allowed herself to go without and to be put down by her very domineering husband. Then one day, on a trip to Paris, she decides to end her own life, but things don't go to plan and she ends up finding life instead. On her journey, we meet some wonderful characters; every one of them I would love to sit down and have tea with. The story will take you through the full spectrum of emotions and once finished wishing for more.

not the type of book I would generally buy however ....it was very good and i could relate to some of it.

There are a variety of covers for this book, and the one I have has quite a light-hearted, chick-lit, happy sort of feel to it, which drew me to the book initially - but after having actually read the book the cover doesn't fit the book at all as the story is much... darker I suppose you'd say, as it starts off with the main character, Marianne, trying to commit suicide. So the cover is a bit deceiving.
The story itself is about Marianne who is stuck in a loveless, controlling marriage who decides the only way out is to kill herself. Marianne and her husband, Lothar, are German, but visiting Paris for a break, so she decides to throw herself into the Seine. She does this, but is saved, so her suicide attempt is thwarted. She then decides, while she still has the momentum, to run away to Kedruc, which is a place she saw on a drinks coaster in the hospital that she thought looked lovely.
Once she eventually gets there she starts working in a kitchen and slowly gets to know the other residents and eventually finds her place in the world, with quite a few hiccups along the way.
This book wasn't at all what I was expecting, and I did find Marianne annoying and quite a weak character to start with, but as the book went on her character slowly developed, although she was still quite an 'interesting' character! To be honest I didn't think it was going to be my sort of book at first, but I persevered and was glad I did. It was a really unusual, interesting book with a variety of intriguing secondary characters, and a mystical sort of feeling throughout. I ended up really enjoying it and it is one of those books that I will remember.

I really Enjoyed The Little Breyon Bistro by Nina George it was was quirky and full of likable characters.

Lovely little book. Really enjoyed it and loved the setting

This has all the ingredients for the type of heartwarming story I usually enjoy - middle-aged woman flees uninspiring life and loveless marriage for a bit of adventure in a beautiful little community populated with quirky characters. Somehow, though, nothing about it engaged me. Not the characters, nor the landscape, nor the whimsical Breton folklore, and especially not the writing (or perhaps the translation). A disappointment for me but I am grateful to Little, Brown and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read it and give my honest opinion.
