Lisa and her friend Ali is attacked but only Lisa survives.

As Lisa starts recovering she begins to suffer with panic attacks anywhere she feels unsafe.

This is a really well written novel with insight into the struggles of a person who survived a horrible ordeal

3.5 stars rounded up to 4
This book is very well written. I liked the story. It was easy to read but nothing really stood out to me that I would have to recommend to others. This book is marketed as a thriller but I don’t believe that is categorized correctly.

Dare to Remember explores what happens after an attack. Lisa can’t seem to remember exactly what happened during the attack. She goes to a small village and makes friends with an old man next door. While she was out one day she met a lady. In this new location and friendship, she starts going to therapy to remember what happened. This shows the journey through remembering the past and how to process it.

Easy enough to read and the writing style is good.

I wish this book didn't claim to be fast=paced because I really think that was a disservice to the story. It is definitely more of a slow burn, but it is interesting and kept me up past my bedtime.

Just not the book for me. It was darker of a crime novel than I'm typically interested in but incredibly compelling and fast-moving

Dare To Remember by Susanna Beard is a great psychological thriller and a wonderful debut novel full of twists and turns.

Dare to Remember tells the story of Lisa, who survived an attack and has vague memories of the event. She is in search of what happen on that day and experience survivor’s guilt.

This book is slow and not thriller as it was dubbed. I had high hopes in this book but it does disappoint me. Honestly, I had a hard to time finishing it. However, the writing was good and the plot is okay.

This book was too hard for me to read, because of personal experience, but because I know that it was very well researched and excellent portrayal of what a person has happen after tragedy, I will recommend to many.

As a psychologist, I often find myself eye-rolling at literary depictions of PTSD, and the use of “amnesia”. This story, however, offered insight into the recovery after a violent tragedy, without melodrama or stretching plausibility. I think readers who criticized the main character as under-developed failed to recognize the references to the full life lived “before”and the fact that the event now defined the girl. No ridiculous, shocking plot twists....just a very readable unfolding of life going on after an awful tragedy.

This is like nothing I've ever read before. I can't quite put my finger on it, it's something about the slowness and redundancy of going through daily life added to an overall sense of dread and wondering.

After a tragic event, Lisa is left to put together the pieces and try to get her life back on track. This is highly psychological but certainly not a thriller - it is slow in pace and quite redundant at times. There is no doubt that this is a very talented author, and I am very impressed that this is a debut. However, it absolutely took a different route than I thought it would, and had it not been for the unsatisfying conclusion, I would have given this a high 4 stars.

Thank you to Netgalley, Legend Press and Susanna Beard for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"Dare to remember" is the story of a young woman named Lisa who undergoes a life changing trauma when an acquaintance follows her and her flatmate home from a pub. By night's end her flatmate and best friend Ali is dead and she will spend the next month in hospital with life threatening injuries.

The problem? Lisa Fulbrook is so injured that she misses the trial and sentencing - AND - she cannot remember what happened that night. Why did Ali die while she lived? Why them?

When she is finally released from hospital, Lisa moves to a quiet village to recuperate. She rents a small house and works from home. She goes out only to shop for the necessities and when she does, she bundles up with a scarf to hide the angry knife scar on her neck. She shuns social contact for the most part, but befriends John, an elderly man who lives next door. A widower, he lives alone except for the companionship of his small black spaniel, Riley. When John becomes unwell, Lisa takes over the walking and general care of Riley. Having this small fur person in her life gets her through some of her most harrowing and lonely times.

"Riley is her lifeline"

While walking Riley, Lisa meets a new friend and fellow dogwalker, Jessica. Though Lisa is withdrawn at first, Jessica's gregarious nature wins Lisa over and the two become friends. Even Jessica's friendship though cannot alleviate Lisa's increasing depression.

As the months pass, Lisa valiantly tries to remember the sequence of events that occurred the night of the attack. Grieving for her friend Ali, she suffers from survivor's guilt and disturbing flashbacks plague her days... and her dreams. Her regular trips into the city for psychotherapist appointments do not seem to be helping. The circumstances of the attack continue to elude her and Lisa feels disengaged with life, as though she is just marking time.

"She's had enough drama to last her a lifetime."

Events unfold that force Lisa to become involved with other people. All the time, the reader wonders if she will remember what happened to her. And... if she does, will she be glad that she remembered, or devastated?

The entire time I was reading this novel I kept wondering, "Is Lisa as genuine as she seems? or, is the author tricking me and Lisa is an unreliable narrator? As letting you know the answer to that question would be a spoiler (and I never divulge spoilers!), I guess you'll have to read the book yourself to find out.

Though it is touted as a psychological thriller, I think the novel is more of a slow-paced suspense novel. There is no real mystery here, and no huge twists or thrills. Just a well-written book that explores how people can be affected by trauma and how interpersonal interaction can help them adapt and strive through it. The novel also explores 'restorative justice' and examines how it can benefit the victims of crime.

The fact that "Dare to remember" is Susanna Beard's debut novel is belied by the skillful writing and thought provoking plot. All in all, an enjoyable read for those who don't need a fast pace or tension-filled pages, and who like endings that are neatly tied up.

This book was a little slow for my taste. It is definitely more of psychological drama than a psychological thriller.

Lisa Fulbrook survived a brutal attack in her own home, which left her best friend, Ali Mayfield dead. In this book, you follow Lisa’s journey through this traumatic event and her fight for the “truth”.
Lisa only has vague memories of the event. She isolates herself from her friends and family.
She forges a friendship with John, her elderly next- door neighbor. John has health issues & could no longer care for his dog, so Lisa starts walking & caring for the dog.
Lisa grew very attached to Riley and enjoyed their daily walks. She met another dog walker, Jessica, who befriended her. Jessica was dealing with her own life problems. You follow their journey of trying to heal & recover from the traumas they have faced.

Thanks to netgalley for the chance of having read this book. It had me hooked from the beginning and I couldn't wait to see if Lisa remembered anything at all. Recommended!

This is a simple, straight-forward exploration of violence and PTSD. There are no curves or twists. Not that those things are needed to make a book good. But this one was a recitation of the protagonist's symptoms and seeming inability to move forward.

This book was so simple, yet so complex and I loved reading every moment of it. I felt a deep sorrow and connection for the main character that made me want to keep reading to find out the resolution. It is very easy to connect with this character, along with the others, as well. She is very humble, yet closed off but not as broken as she might think. I think this is a great telling of a girl who was dealt the wrong hand and was forced to look at the brighter side of things in order to live her life like she once did.

I started this book anticipating a psychological thriller and was disappointed when it did not deliver. Susanna Beard is being compared to Gillian Flynn, S.J. Watson and B.A. Paris, however unfortunately I would not place her in the same category. Instead, Dare to Remember is a 3-star crime drama.

This story moved at frustratingly slow pace. Despite the time permitted, there just was no character development. The ending left much to be desired – no twists, turns or real closure. Each chapter was the same as the last with no real progress. Very repetitive.

Aside from the main plot, there is a side story of Lisa’s new friend/neighbour (Jessica) who is being physically abused by her husband. This side story provides nothing additional to the story and felt like a space filler.

This is a good thriller although sometimes it seemed to read as non fiction. The story is of Lisa, who survives a knife attack on herself and her best friend Ali. Unfortunately Ali died. Lisa had her throat cut and almost died, she can't remember what happened.Lisa begins a solitary existence in a quiet village. She makes a couple of friends and is given a dog. She pends a lot of time running. Lisa desperately wants to remember what happened on the night of the attack and why Ali died. The killer is behind bars, can he help her? Read on.
