For readers unfamiliar with the man behind the music, Jack White: How He Built an Empire from the Blues, is a poor place to start. This book was very disappointing. Jack White has been one of my favorite musicians for years yet this book made him very unlikable and unappealing. A travesty! It is easy to become overwhelmed by the mundane details of Detroit and other artists/bands in the area. It's painfully boring.

A well written, deeply researched portrait of a creative musical genius, which doubles as a chronicle of the burgeoning garage rock scene in Detroit at the turn of the millennium.

I'm unfortunately not a die-hard fan of Jack White. Hence, I cannot comment on what are facts and what are not.
However, what I can say is that this book is pretty dry. I was hoping that this book will make me more of a fan (and convert non-fans to at least a decent fan of Jack White), which means more interesting and personal stories. This did not happen.

This was so poorly written. It was like reading a history book on Jack White's family, hometown, drama. You name it, it was in there dating back farther than I cared for. I couldn't even finish the book.

Jack White: How He Built an Empire from the Blues as a title pretty much explains what the book is about. Jack White - one half of the white stripes (who were an ex-married couple and not siblings) got his start in Detroit. Although he probably would have fit in more as a black man in the 1980s he has created an empire. The book is a timeline of his journey through music - and Jack is a bit mysterious so it was nice to see a little bit more from behind the curtain so to speak and learn more about him. The book is based on interviews from band mates and friends and has a lot of interesting information in it.
