Packed with suspense and intrigue, In a Cottage, In a Wood is the perfect blend of thriller and mystery. The story centres around Neve, a young woman whose chance encounter with a stranger under the worst of circumstances leads to a brand new life in the country.

Neve is a risk-taker who has fallen on hard times; she has become an expert at projecting an aura of confidence yet struggles to see a way out of her dire financial situation and lacklustre life. She is undeniably flawed yet still somehow endearing, and when the unexpected gift of a cottage arrives on her horizon, you find yourself rooting for Neve and hoping that it will be the perfect opportunity for her to turn things around and make a fresh start.

Of course, though, things aren't quite that simple and before long, Neve is left playing detective and trying her best to find out the story of the woman on the bridge - all while desperately trying to shake the sinister feeling that lurks about her newly-acquired home.

There is definitely a creepy vibe about the cottage that sets your nerves on edge, even as a reader. Reminiscent of so many horror films about abandoned cabins in woods, while this book isn't a horror story, it certainly still borrows the spooky atmosphere of this classic horror trope and plays it to perfection.

In a Cottage, In a Wood is a slow-burner yet still highly engaging throughout. It's packed with surprising twists and turns that keep you guessing right to the end, even as you pray that Neve will somehow earn herself a happily ever after. With a compelling storyline, some deeply disturbed characters and a whole shoal of red herrings to throw you off the scent, this book is expertly written. It's also an ideal novel to devour in a single sitting - but you may find yourself sleeping with the light on afterwards!

I enjoyed Cass Green's first book The Woman Next Door so I was looking forward to reading In a Cottage In a Wood.

I was drawn into this book from the first page. It is very easy reading with short snappy chapters.

Really enjoyed this thriller. I thought it was cleverly written and the story flowed through very well. I know some readers didn’t like Neve but I didn’t find her that bad tbh. I didn’t see the twist at the end which is always good and I liked the conclusion.

This is a brilliant 5 star story which I enjoyed very much. Neve is single, lives with her sister, drinks too much and has a crap job. Early one morning on Waterloo Bridge, before Christmas, she sees a woman in an evening dress. Asking if the woman needs help, she is asked her name. The woman then speaks into her phone, hands Neve a letter and jumps to her death in the river below! A few weeks later Neve receives a letter from a solicitor, she then finds out she has been left a country cottage. Read on and discover what happens next!

Brilliant. I was hooked from the first page. Why would someone leave you a cottage when they had only just met you? The ending of this story is so unexpected. It was a total surprise to me. If there are clues, I did not see any of them. Neve's life is turbulent and when she moves to the cottage she starts to feel that she is being watched and that someone doesn't want her to stay there. This is a well thought out and put together book. I would definitely recommend it. Cass Green really knows how to write a really good edge of the seat thriller.

The premise of this book drew me to it as soon as I read it – the idea of meeting someone on a bridge late at night and then two weeks later receiving an unexpected gift just grabbed me right away! I’m pleased to say that the book didn’t disappoint. The cottage in the wood is such a creepy location and it’s something in books that sets my nerves on edge so this book had me in it’s clutches. The novel didn’t end up being as scary as I was thinking it might be but it definitely had me feeling a bit jumpy in places. I also loved that while I thought I had it all worked out there was a twist that blindsided me, which was great! This is a book that’s definitely worth checking out on these cold winter nights.

Considering I'd seen this book hyped everywhere, I was somewhat disappointed. It felt unbelievable and over the top at times. It was easy enough to read but took a long time to build up before fizzling out. Not helped by the fact Neve the main character wasn't easy to warm to. Not one I'll be recommending any time soon.

Thank you very much to NetGalley, Cass Green and Bookouture for the ARC of The Cottage In The Wood in return for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book it kept me hooked all the way through and though at times I did wonder where it was going it kept me hooked as I had to find out. Neve Carey's life is derailing big time and after breaking up with her boyfriend of 4 years she wakes to find herself beside a stranger the morning after her office Christmas party. She heads home over Waterloo bridge and encounters a lady about to take her life, she hands Neve a brown envelope and says "Keep it if you can bear to" and jumps into the Thames. Then weeks later Never finds out that she has been gifted a cottage in Cornwall and with little to keep her in London she decides to go and move to the cottage which turns out to be filthy and creepy and nothing like she imagined. This book was so creepy and addictive I couldn't put it down and I suspected everyone she encountered and I love when books hold a twist I don't see coming!!!

A chance meeting on Waterloo Bridge, London brings Neve a new start, but when she gets to Cornwall things don't exactly go to plan. Started off really liking this but less so in the middle and end. Neve was so annoying ALL the time! She just wades in with no thought to the consequences, she was selfish and inconsiderate and I didn't care for her at all - kept hoping she would be bumped off and quickly! The author has an engaging style of writing, making the book very easy to get into, so I would definitely read more of her books. An excellent stocking filler.

I've read lots of domestic thrillers recently, but this one stands out to me, mainly due to the 'relatability' of the protagonist, Neve's situation. Although I don't relate to Neve on many levels (her life is a mess, she seems to sabotage herself and her happiness and she's not overly responsible or mature), I do relate to her sitation. As a twenty-something living near London who can only dream of owning a property of my own, Neve's 'unexpected lifeline' – the cottage given to her for free by a stranger – is very intriguing to me. As I was reading, I found myself really getting into Neve's head. How would I feel if someone gave me a cottage? Would I keep it? How would I feel about being given something as expensive and unobtainable as a house, especially if I receieved it in such dark circumstances? To be honest, I haven't felt this immersed in a book in a long time! As well as this, the pace was perfect, the other character's were fleshed out and the setting was just the right amount of believeable and ominous. One slight negative - although I loved this book, I have minused a star as I felt the setup to the twist could have been better - a lot of the information seemed a little 'thin on the ground' and could have been fleshed out a little more. Other than that, this book was great!

A very spooky and atmospheric mystery. A great premise for a story, it really works! A chance encounter changes your life, but is it for the better, or have you unknowingly stepped into someone else nightmare!
Brilliant!
