This is a reasonably interesting and certainly very well-researched account of the Tranby Croft Affair, sometimes known as the Royal Baccarat Scandal, a small by-way of history in which a respected establishment figure was accused of cheating at a game with the Prince of Wales. Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gordon-Cumming was arrested and put on trial and the whole business sent shock waves through high society and the court. Unfortunately much remains unknown about the scandal which results in too much speculation, too many “might haves” and I found that irritating. In general I found the book rather too long and would have been content with a less detailed account.

I am sorry to say I was unable to read the book. The sentences are all over the place. A new sentence starts before the old one is finished. I am really disappointed because I have read a little about this scandal before and was looking forward to learning more about it. I am sure the book is wonderful, I just couldn't make heads or tails about it.
