Interesting premise, everyone loves an anti-hero, and it certainly held my attention, enough that I would like to read more

Not my sort of book, too many short sentences and overall I found it a little tedious as I found that the author tried to over-explain things-which became boring.

I will be upfront and say this to anyone considering reading this book. Please do not waste 5 hours of your life which you will never get back. If you are not convinced, read my review and then decide - that way you will hopefully lose only 5 minutes.

I was hoping this book would be a great page-turner, going by the blurb which claimed the protagonist was up there with Lee Child's Jack Reacher, and because of the positive reviews on netgalley. Unfortunately, the book does not live up to either. The central idea would have been viable, but is completely let down by a terrible plot, appallingly poor writing and no editing to speak of.

The author seems to be of the opinion that throwing in any number superlatives and adjectives makes for good metaphors, and that keeping sentences short. And telegraphic. While stating. The bleeding obvious. Is stylish writing. The result is unintentionally hilarious at times, and unmitigated drivel at others. Sadly, even basic grammar is neglected both by the author and editor, if there was one. Even if one were prepared to set all that aside, the basic characterisation of the protagonist is doomed by constant contradictions.

The summary is that the protagonist, a professional hitman, finds a target of his already dead when he breaks into the target's house. He spares the life of the target's son, who walks in on him, for no good reason that is evident at the time. In hindsight, he identifies with the son, as he himself had lost his mother to violence at a similar age. As most people who experience violent deaths in the family do, the young version of the protagonist finds himself a mentor in a family friend, who is conveniently ex-Mossad, and trains himself to become a ruthless killer. Having dealt with his mother's murderer, the protagonist decides he quite likes the idea of knocking off people for a living. He tells himself it is ok to do this because the people he kills are baddies anyway. He describes himself as a man without a conscience.

He suddenly sprouts a conscience after his run-in with the dead target's teenage son, and decides to protect the boy, who is already being protected by the MI5. He also gets interested in what the dead target was up to, and is shocked that he has been lied to - she was actually a scientist fighting bio-terrorism, but amazingly, the person who took a contract out on her said she was one of the baddies. In his attempt to make amends, the protagonist joins forces with a stunningly attractive MI5 agent and outwits the Met, the MI5, Mossad, the Russian mafia, ex-CIA agents, local thugs, al Qaeda agents, home grown terrorists etc without any back up, or even a mobile phone. Entirely possible. Especially when you consider his cutting-edge methods of detection - he is given a list (in the form of a printed sheaf of papers!) of MI5 safe houses in England, by one of the arch-villains. Because of course these are available at your neighbourhood newsagent's.

Anyway, the protagonist decides to head to the nearest address on the list. He heads to the general area of London, but does not know where the road is exactly. So how does he find it? Not on google maps, like ordinary muppets would. Not even on a London A-Z, as an ageing muppet would. No, he shrewdly drops into a local pub, chats up the dumpy, overweight barmaid, dazzles her with his smile, and gets her to tell him where this road is, over a pint. Elementary.

Here are some absolute beauties:

"I stood there, mute and numb. It was as if someone had taken a scalpel to my chest, sliced through flesh and sinew, carved out my heart, chopped it up and awkwardly shoved the mismatched pieces back on the wrong side and in the wrong place". Over-egging it some...

"Recession hit Britain had made its mark on the suburbs". It was not the recession that made it's mark, it was Britain.

"Eyes like traffic lights on go, body all curves and valleys, she looked quite beautiful." Was she an alien, perchance?

I remember that I had a great time while I was reading the book "A Deadly Trade" by E.V. Seymour. It's a turn page novel. A fabulous thriller with an interesting writing style.

I enjoyed this book very much. With enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested, it kept me turning the pages, I'll be looking out for more books from this writer.

Many thanks to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.

A Deadly Trade is the first book in a new series by EV Seymour.

It follows the trials & tribulations of a hitman when an assassination goes wrong. This should be an excellent thriller.

Unfortunately I found that the plot plodded along and that the main character was hopeless at his job. I also guessed the major twist cattle end quite early on.

So unfortunately it is only an average thriller

Excellent novel. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very good writing style and characterisation. Looking forward to more works by the author

Thanks for the chance to read this. Sadly, despite the genre being absolutely my favourite, I found myself with little appreciation of the central character who seemed a little too 'hither and thither' to be realistic in his craft. It was OK, but I was not exactly gripped.

Thank you for letting me read this book,

Unfortenately I didn’t finish this book because I wasn’t keen on reading about assassins. I do think the story is slow paced and not gripping in the beginning. And I have many other books to read, so I have decided not to finish this one.

A fast-paced story with an enigmatic male anti-hero and lots of action. Vividly depicted characters. The setting is described in great detail making it easy to imagine, giving the story its authenticity. A well-written first chapter draws you in. An easy read and hard to put down. I read this in a few hours. The plot is good, but I did work out the twist about half-way through. Knowing the villain didn't spoil the story for me as I enjoyed having my theories confirmed.
A good contemporary thriller, which combines, spy action, psychological thrills, technology, and a forbidden relationship. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series 'Final Target'.
I received a copy of this book from Harper UK Harper Fiction - Killer Reads via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Great crime book, good pace and enough depth to make the story gripping. An interesting take on the lead character which I enjoyed reading about and challenged my opinion of traditional goodies and baddies. Looking forward to the next instalment.

‘A Deadly Trade’ ( A Josh Thane Thriller) by E.V. Seymour published 10/11 by HarperCollins UK

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book as the book lists itself as ‘ a gripping espionage thriller’,not the kind of book I would normally read or have much interest in.....however I was glad I stepped out of my ‘comfort book zone’ as in a word, well 4, ‘this book was awesome’!!!
It was like being in an episode of ‘24’ or similar, the action so fast paced and relentless it really convinced you that you were part of the story and the action....
Basically the story starts as assasin, Josh, goes to carry out a ‘job’ however he finds someone has beaten him to it, he makes a startling discovery which then leads to a frantic race against time to save the world! Sounds dramatic, well it is!!! .
The story is full of high tension twists and turns that never stop, right until the very last sentence.
Terrorists, Mossad Operatives, Russians, Secrets, wayward family members, dark operatives, murder, intrigue and suspense can be a complicated and heady mix for a film never mind a book but the author manages with their easy descriptive style and great characters to keep you in control of what is happening and to follow every development.
Characters that you think unlikeable will challenge your perceptions of them, you also meet treatcherous, evil, scary, intriguing and OTT characters, all are portrayed wonderfully and in an instant you can picture them
Expect a fast paced ever changing book that you will find hard to resist turning that next page over
I really recommend this book and especially if you think like me that its ‘not my kind of book’ as I am so glad I decided to give it a go
I really look forward to reading more from this author
