My first Jane Casey novel and it won't be my last.
Read and remember the first chapter, if you don't you won't understand.
I liked the relationship between Kerrigan and Derwent, it worked.
I did find it hard at times to believe that there was less use of Police radios and more reliance on mobile phones, especially in public places and talking in front of people they shouldn't have been. Yes, it wouldn't have made the story, but it seemed to be a regular occurrence. What happened to safe to talk?
I'm not overly convinced on the role reversal of Derwent telling Kerrigan to move on with her private life, usually the other way around.
This won't be the first case of juries looking up for past crimes of the person they being asked to judge. If it's a high profile case it will be spread across the papers and hard to miss. Can anyone get a fair trial these days?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have loved the Maeve Kerrigan series and was thrilled to receive this one from Net Galley.
This is one of the very best of the whole series – Maeve’s relationship with Derwent is explored (but not necessarily explained) although the scene where he washes her hair is profoundly moving – or maybe that was just me!
This is a brilliant procedural crime novel – the characters feel authentic, the police work seems genuine and the characters are fleshed out wonderfully. There were enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and I can't wait for the next one!

Thank you net Galley and HarperCollins for this book.

This is the first book I have read by Jane Casey and didn't realise it was in series. I enjoyed the book and will now go backwards to start at the beginning. I thought the story was good and the characters were believable. I look forward to reading more of Jane's books.

A convicted murderer (Leo Stone)is jailed , but released after a number of years on a technicality , after a book is released by one of the Jurors on the original case . DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent were the original investigators and now had to look into the conviction . They were convinced it was right but Leo protested his innocence . Shortly after his release similar murders start happening again . Is Leo carrying on or is someone else copying his M.O.
He is staying in a room in a hostel run by a man who dresses as a monk but is this "Brother " all he appears to be ?
There are a number of twists and turns in this story , with new paths opening up all the way through as different things are brought to light . Well written and highly readable .

I really enjoyed this book despite having not read the other books in the series. It is a police procedural murder mystery novel and is written in the first person so it is easy to relate to the narrative. It proceeds at a fast interesting twisty pace right to the end action .The atmospheric description of some of the scenes is particularly interesting and I would definitely read other books by this author

There are some books that you read that you whizz through, not always taking the full story in and then there are those that you truly savour, reading every last morsel... I devoured this one!

There are so many action packed twists and turns throughout the whole story, every chapter feels it's in HD and the twist at the end was fantastically written, I honestly didnt have a clue how it was going to wrap up.

The relationship between Maeve and her partner DI Josh Derwent pans out amazingly, portraying real compassionship, friendship and loyalty above everything else.

This was the first book I have read in the DS Maeve Kerrigan series so a small part of me was worried I wasnt going to 'get it's but I found it really easy to pick up and you could quite easily read it as a stand alone. I will definitely be downloading the first 7 of the series and waiting in anticipation for the next instalment (due 2020).

One of the best crime mysteries I have read this year and will highly recommend time and time again!

A massive thank you to netgalley and Harper Collins UK for the ARC.

Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.

My first book by this author and it certainly won’t be my last. Brilliant read, had me believing I knew who the killer was until the twist.

Cruel Acts was my first Jane Casey book and certainly won't be my last. What a class act she is! One of the best whodunnits I've read in quite some time. Clever plot, intelligently written with wonderful believable characters in whom I was immediately invested. The setting was good, the writing was crisp and realistic and just over-all a cut above other books in this genre. In fact, a cut WAY above others.. And I have to confess, I didn't have a clue as to the surprise ending - and I won't elaborate further for fear of letting slip spoilers. Definitely would highly recommend this book if you're after a rivetting good read...........

This is the first Jane Casey book I have read. When I started it I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it however it really got under my skin and kept me gripped until the end. It is very much part of a series and although this can certainly be read as a stand alone, I found myself thinking that I would like to know the back story and will certainly read earlier books in the series. There are a fair few red herrings in this and overall it was a really satisfying read. I look forward to reading more. It kept me guessing till the end.

I couldn't get into this book but I think that is my own fault as I didn't realise it was part of a series when I requested it. I did enjoy the writing though so my rating is based solely on that.

Solid, well-written police procedural but it didn't have that spark that made me want to keep reading. I'm sure it will appeal to hard-core fans of the genre. DNF

I enjoyed this book, but I would have liked it more if I had read the other books from this series. I wasn’t aware that it was book 8 until I was more than halfway through. I felt like I was missing something, so at least now I know what that thing is. I really enjoyed the storyline and the writing was very good. I was surprised at many moments and wasn’t sure what was going to happen next. I also really liked the working relationship between Derwent and Maeve. They’re both great characters and I would read the other books just to learn more about them as characters. Some parts were a little bit slow going and uneventful, but mostly enjoyable. I do feel a little bit disappointed by this book as I’ve read many great reviews about it, but I can definitely see why other people loved it.

A pacy crime thriller that gets more intriguing as it progresses, with a slight twist at the end - just proving that life doesn't always have a fairytale ending.
The main character, DS Maeve Kerrigan, carries enough emotional baggage with her to make her believable and interesting and yet Casey doesn't lean too heavily on this as is often the case with other novels where the story-line becomes smothered.
A compelling read that left me wanting to read more of this detective's cases.

Maeve Kerrigan #8

Leo Stone had been convicted of murder and but a lawyer has lodged an appeal. It seems some of the jurors looked up his past crimes and found him guilty for them and not just the crime he was being he was being tried for. So there's now a case for miscarriage of justice. Leo Stone is released and it's not long before a woman goes missing in similar circumstances Leo was charged with. Is it a copycat offender or is Leo re-offending?

DS Meave Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent are the officers who investigated when Leo Stone's case was quashed for jury irregularities. Another woman had disappeared. The tension flows off the pages. The characters are well rounded and the plot line believable. I did not know that this was the eighth book in this series. I don't usually like to read books out of the order that they were written in, but I think this book can be read as a standalone. I will eventually go back and read this series from the beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

I would like to thank Netgalley HarperCollins UK HarperFiction and the author Jane Casey for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Once again, I find myself enthusing about one of Jane Casey's books starring the unparalleled partnership of Detectives Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent. This might be the 8th outing in this series, but it doesn't show and remains fresh and a riveting read from start to finish. I won't go into any of the plot as the blurb explains it well enough and to say more would give the game away but what I will advise is that you be prepared for twists and turns, tension and scenes of peril!

With fantastic characters, a gripping plot and enough back story so it can be read as a standalone, this is one not to be missed for all you fans of police-procedural/crime/suspense/thriller/etc/etc., lovers out there.

Thank you once again to the Publisher via NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest review.

Ms Casey never ever disappoints.
Another top class publication in the Maeve Kerrigan series of books.
Read it on holiday in a single day lying on the beach.
Few twists and turns along the way.
Here's to the next installment

Cruel Acts is an intensely gripping police procedural by Jane Casey. A fantastic crime thriller. Beautifully written with well-developed, fascinating characters whose relationships with each other feel realistic and kept me as a reader engaged. Especially the deep and complex relationship between our main character, Mauve and her partner D.C. Josh Derwent. This is the first I have read in the D.S. Kerrigan series and I have thoroughly enjoyed it and will be going back to read all the rest!
Loved this book!

This is a thoroughly good story that kept me eagerly waiting for my next opportunity to continue reading it. I loved the characters and will watch out for more from Maeve and Derwent a d I’m sure I can’t be the only reader who wants some romance between the two of them.
It could well have been a five stars from me apart from a little too much ofchRCters deciding to withhold information till it was too late to help but it’s a minor criticism really.
