A great psychological thriller containing lots of twists and turns. Shows how easy it is to think you know someone and then find out you don’t!

You know when a reader says “I couldn’t put this book down?” Well it’s true with this one for sure.

It’s chillingly creeper.

So what if you moved into an area where you think is so nice only to find out there are chilling worrying secrets with a neighbor who certainly acts odd now a child has gone missing along with a whole heap of stuff happening?

Act normal…..right? You don’t want to get noticed or embroiled into anything.

This had me hopping on my feet from page to page wondering….what next.

I don’t know why I’ve taken so long to read this, I think it slipped down my kindle when I first was unorganised joining Netgalley, like a kid in a candy store requesting.

It's been over five years since I received this ARC. I gave it a go and have decided it is not for me. It interested me then and no longer does now.

Helen joins her husband Gary in Germany in a neighbourhood consisting largely of British expats. The various people are a weird mix, There are so many twists and turns and i was thinking all the time it's them or it has to be that person. On a trip to . What has Helen walked into? As the people start dying I can't wait to read more by Rachel Sargeant.

The perfect neighbours or the neighbours from hell?

When a book promises to be ‘the most addictive debut psychological thriller of the year’ you can’t help but to have high hopes for the book and it is a huge statement to live up to and as much as I enjoyed the book it did fall sightly short of that promised statement, however, take that statement away, it is a psychological thriller not to be missed.

With a plot centred around a British ex-pat community in Germany where everyone has something to hide and a back story intertwined throughout, this is a claustrophobic story with a real sense of menace throughout with the tension building up slowly leading to a slightly farfetched killer twist.

In between the chapters is the story of a young student in the UK called Fiona and for me these were some of the best bits with the majority of the other characters a pretty damned unlikable bunch to say the least! With friends like these, who needs enemies.

When violence and tragedy strike, cracks appear in the community and true colours begin to be surface leading to some unsettling plot twists.

It’s very hard to say much more without giving away too much, it is one that you really do need to read for yourselves.

I did find that the bits of German throughout the book to be a little distracting as not all of it was translated so I was having to go on to Google Translate to translate the German text myself incase I missed anything vital to the plot.

This is a great debut novel and I will defiantly be keeping an eye out for Rachel Sargeant’s next book.

Thank you to the author Rachel Sargeant, publishers HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction, Killer Reads and NetGalley for my copy of this book in exchange for an honest and independent review.

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

When Helen moves abroad with her loving husband Gary, she can't wait to meet her fellow expat teachers from the local International School. But her new start is about to become her worst nightmare...... As soon as the charming family across the way welcome Helen into their home, she begins to suspect that all is not what it seems. Than Gary starts to behave strangely and a child goes missing, vanished without a trace. When violence and tragedy strike, cracks appear in the community, and Helen realises her perfect neighbours are capable of almost anything.

What started off as a pretty simple strange read soon escalated into a rather gripping story that I honestly couldn't put down!
There were a few pacing issues where I found myself questioning whether I missed bits, as some of the chapters moved on quite quickly, but other then that I really enjoyed this one.

While I didn't massively like any of the characters, I found that this didn't really matter as the plotline carried itself and it became more about who I suspected or trusted rather then who I liked. I was constantly guessing throughout and I still never saw that reveal coming!!! And that ending?!?! Will definitely look out for more of this author's books! Highly recommend!

This is a good psychological thriller with lots of twists and turns, but I marked it down because of Helen. I found her brash and some of her actions completely unbelievable. Also the "mass murder" at the neighbours house and no one screamed or tried to escape??? not believable

The story was very slow paced in my opinion, without any suspicion or build up tense. Therefore I didnt finish this book

That was utterly haunting. Wow, I don’t know where to begin. This book totally gripped me, I stayed up reading all night because I couldn’t sleep until I knew what happened. A true physiological thriller.
It makes me so happy when you read a thriller and it breaks all the rules, it was brilliant.

Our protagonist Helen, relocates to Germany after her husband gets a teaching position there. They move in to a British neighbourhood as part of the international school. Helen immediately clashes with her new neighbours and so begins the dark and twisted path of murder, deception and never really knowing what goes on behind closed doors.

Highly recommend!

I don't often read thrillers as they they aren't one of my favourite genres however I really enjoyed this book. I really didn't predict the ending and found most of the characters had flaws in one way or the other but all integral to the story. Basing it in Germany gave an added dimension. and I would certainly recommend this book.

Helen moves to Germany with her husband Gary. She soon realizes that the neighbors are not quite what they appear to be. The book contains many twists and turns, ultimately reaching an unexpected conclusion. It held my attention from the first page throughout the remainder of the book. I recommend it to thriller fans.

A good modern thriller. It has plenty of twists and turns and held my interest to the last page.

This book is a little surprising

Started off quite slow and some of the characters are unlikeable you sense something is not quite right but can’t quite put your finger on it

It’s worth perservering because the ending is a twist you won’t see coming and this is what gives this book a 4 star rating for me

I read this book with a break as I lost my reading mojo for a while But once I knuckled down and read again I thoroughly enjoyed it and was a good and gripping read.

Helen joins her husband Gary in Germany where he’s a teacher at an international school, but things are not what she expected. There’s a strange atmosphere in the street where they live and a very overbearing neighbour, the wife of the headmaster, and also the local busybody. After a promising start, it did meander a bit, so wasn’t quite the thriller it could have been. I found the characters a bit bizarre with no likeable traits, especially the ones living in the street who “sucked’ up to Louisa. Loved the cover which was very enticing but wouldn’t want to live anywhere near neighbours like these!

This is a book about neighbours, who all live in a cul de sac and the husbands who all work at the school in Germany
As the book evolves we realise that none of the main characters are who they seem.
It is a compelling book, full of misleading information about who does what to whom and which characters can be believed.
The ending is unexpected and you realise that there really are no winners, only survivors.
A book with a different edge to it.
