I really enjoyed this book. A tale of family bonds and loyalties. As always a very descriptive book with great characters. You can imagine the people in the story being someone you would meet in Cornwall

I always look forward to a new novel from Fern Britton. This book didn't disappoint. The writing is good, the story well plotted and the characters well developed. I couldn't quite sympathise with main character Sennen , perhaps because she abandoned her children when young and caused her parents such anguish, but the unravelling of the story does show her story to be more complex than it seems at first sight. The Cornish background is, as always,, a bonus !

Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for a review copy.

We know of Ella from previous books of ferns, but this book is primarily about her mother Sennen. She is 15 and gets pregnant by an older man but refuses to tell her parents who the father is. 2 years later she gets pregnant by the same man again and Sennen decides to leave her kids with their grandparents and runs away to try and find the kids father. Things dont go according to plan and Sennen decides her kids are better off without her and leaves them and swans off to live a kid free life.

Ella and her brother are tryign to track Sennen down because their grandmother died and left Sennen the house. The lawyers find her in India and Sennen comes home to see the lawyer and face up to her kids.

This was an interesting story and i am not sure i would of been so accomodating to my mother if she did that but it all has a nice ending.

A nice lighthearted read. Not one I would particularly rush to reread but I enjoyed it all the same. I would definitely read more from Fern in the future.

3.5 stars

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I would like to say that I found this book incredibly well written and it movingly depicts the impact that the actions of one teenage girl can have on several generations of a family.
The book is set in two timelines, the problem that I have with the book is that I found the present day element of the story to be a bit boring and I'm sorry to say that I did find myself skipping to what I considered to be the good bits (:those set in the past).

This is the second Fern Britton book I have read and enjoyed this one far more. The characters and the plot show much more originality and the outcome is less predictable. However, the writing remains twee and the main characters are all perfect human specimens - beautiful, talented, well-off, have excellent taste and are all nice people. The attempts at comedy through the character Queenie are largely unsuccessful and seem to owe a lot to the Vicar of Dibley. The book passed a couple of rainy afternoons and would be a good holiday read but I personally don't think I will read any more by this author.

The book starts with Sennen leaving cornwall and her 2 children behind in the care of her parents - then the book goes from the past to the present about Sennen, her parents and her children as they grow up. Its a story of secrets and sadness. An enjoyable read perfect wet weather reading!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this.

I love English seaside books mainly because of the talent of authors to paint the setting and take the reader right there to the coastline. This book is no exception and Britton paints the landscape with sound knowledge and expertise. From reading reviews I can see that this is a book that has links to other characters the location is very familiar for Britton but this book stands alone and therefore you don’t need to have read others to be able to follow the story.

Ella was just a baby, and Henry two years old when their mother, Sennen who was 17 at the time, walked out on her children, leaving them to be brought up by her parents.

Fast forward to now and Ella and Henry are grown up, and have mixed feelings towards the mum the barely remember or knew. However things are about to come to a head, when she returns to Cornwall.

The book spans three generations and throughout, the reader gets a chance to see each one and the stories that have been spun to take them where they are today. Heartwarming and emotive, this is a great Summer read – easy to get into and at times hard to tear yourself away. This is a beautifully written, well-paced novel about loss, secrets, redemption and acceptance.

The story starts with 17 year old Sennen leaving Cornwall and her two babies with her mother Adela and heading off to look for the father. Fast forward twenty and het daughter Ella is now grown up and returning to Cornwall on the death of her beloved grandmother Adela.... but what will happen when Sennen finally turns up to face up to her past!

A good family saga with 3 generations of women and their secrets and mistakes, an enjoyable read.

The story of 3 women Ella, Adela and Sennen
The book opens with a flashback to Ella’s mother Sennen, then 17, as she creeps out of the house and runs away leaving her two babies to the care of her mother Adela.
We then meet a grown up Ella who comes to comes back to the beautiful Cornish coast after the death of her much loved grandmother, Adela.
The story shifts between the present day while Ella is making a new life in Cornwall; the story of her grandparents meeting and falling in love and the effects of Sennen’s disappearance on their marriage and the story of why Sennen left and what happened to her.
These strands are brought together when Sennen turns up in the village where Ella has made her home.to find out if Ella and her brother can accept her back.
This book is an easy, unchallenging read. Sadly I found some elements of the plot and the characters’ behaviour unconvincing and the book unmemorable.

A sweet story about family secrets and how the actions of one generation affect another. I hadn’t read much women’s fiction previously and this was a lovely introduction. Sennen grew on me the more I learned about her motives, though I felt Ella’s relationship progressed more quickly than would be realistic. What this book really had for it was its mix of the exotic with the quintessentially English setting that would appeal to an international audience.

Absolutely gripped from the beginning. Loved the story, loved the characters and seriously didn’t want it to end even though I was dying to see how things panned out for sennen nd her kids. Would highly recommend this book nd a first from the author for me but certainly won’t be my last 😀

I have no idea how this novel has received such great ratings from other reviewers on Goodreads. I have read the preview copy, and I am struggling to decide where to even begin. From a very poor plot to not especially elegant writing and a 'they lived happily ever after' ending this novel left me rather cross about having spent the time reading it. I wanted to finish it because a) I needed to review it and b) I was hoping it would redeem itself in the end. Sadly. the latter did not happen The drama of the main character is entirely and totally self-inflicted and the monumental stupidity of her actions has driven me to the brink of despair. Couple this with quite inconsistent and typecast characters, and pointless little interludes pertaining to characters not pertinent to the story, and I am wondering how anyone could have liked it. It almost felt like a caricature or incredibly exaggerated versions of normal people. The grammar, basic language and inconsistencies in plot lines and timelines also bothered me.

If you like very fictional scenarios that read easily without much effort and trigger the tear ducts without much logic, then this might be for you. Sadly, it was not what I expected having read the blurb.

I love Fern Britton's books - they are always warm and well written, with a beautiful setting and engaging characters.

I wasn't disappointed. This is an emotional roller coaster of a story spanning three generations of a family set in beautiful Cornwall. I was drawn into the story and found it difficult to put down. A thought provoking but gentle story.

Fern's writing is beautifully evocative, I find myself needing a holiday in the gorgeous countryside and villages of Cornwall. I really enjoyed the descriptions of India too.

Perfect for a cosy afternoon on the sofa or on holiday.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is ultimately a heart-warming story although that is not how it starts. We follow the main character from a troubled childhood to maturity through many emotional twists and turns. The Cornish backdrop does much to enhance the story, of course, as does the other main scenario in India. I particularly enjoyed the description and evocation of Indian life. This family saga successfully spans the generations and evokes many family tensions but thankfully comes full circle for a satisfactory happy ending!
