Susan Grant gives us a space opera novella in Space Hero. Space Marine Lukas Frank and his K9 partner Bang Bang meet star pilot Carlynn and form a relationship. Carlynn goes missing in action and Lukas and Bang Bang
search for her. Happy ending with space action in between

This is a fast, fun, sexy read.

Lieutenant Lukas Frank is deemed a hero although he feels he let many die when a space station exploded around him. His new assignment has brought him to a rough planet where he quickly adopts an orphaned street dog he names Bang-Bang. Bang- Bang is actually an intelligent species with the capacity to learn words, loyalty and use other skills to help his human. Bang-Bang lead Lukas to starpilot Carlynn and their lives are changed forever.

The relationship between Lukas and Carlynn is warm and immediate. But Lukas still suffers from flashbacks which he refuses to discuss. Carlynn is frustrated and decides that taken an assignment of planet might push him to open up. The botanical trip she pilots is supposed to be uneventful. Unfortunately, the initial intel on the planet failed to learn about all the predators. When Carlynn’s ship goes missing, Lukas knows he has to rescue her… and rescue himself.

The characters are wonderfully likeable, including Bang-Bang. There is a nice plot for the novella which kept my attention. The romance is hotter and the language is bolder than I like but I was glad that it was an addition to the storyline and not the sole purpose. I would read more in the series if it wasn’t quite so steamy and brash.

The writing is nicely done and I enjoyed the characters, the world building, even though brief, and the danger. I recommend this to readers who enjoy space military with language and romance that is on the steamy side.

I received this through NetGalley.

So well written I was in total empathy with the characters throughout this book. The gritty start was a little hard to read at first. Ms. Grant pulls you into a new world with just enough familiarity to get you there. She also deals with real problems you see in society today and helps understanding. You will feel with the characters. #Hopeful #SciFi at it's best. #Romance of course.

This was a nicely written Sufi romance, the hero was to die for and the lady hero was just spunky enough without being annoying!!

Normally a soldier suffering from PTSD would reel me in. Add in a dog and I should be all over this, but as much as I wanted to love it, I could not get into it. I had a hard time getting into the writing style and there were huge time gaps with lots happening that we were told of instead of being shown. I felt like I was missing out on important things like Bang Bangs taming and training. There were also weird things described in detail like an entire chapter spent on Puttanesca. It felt like I was being spoon-fed minutiae but not given the meat of the story. Because of this I didn't click with either character and ended up DNFing the story.

This Novella is an expansion on a story that first appeared in volume 1 of Pets In Space .

Whilst the plot remains the same the Author manages to expand on her characters .
She brings the problem of PTSD to the fore ,( where it should be) , how it affects a person and how others relate to the affected person .
The story however remains one of love between a man , a woman and their pet - all who at some time have rescued the other .... especially when Carlynn goes missing .
I particularly liked the interactions between Carlynn and Lukas in this issue - she was much more likable .
Bang-Bang deserves 4 stars just for himself - I hope the Author will continue to write more in this series .

Star Hero: A Star Series Novella by Susan Grant
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was one of the stories from Pets in Space #1 and is a slightly upgraded version. I loved Bang Bang when I first read the story and still loved him reading this again. Bang Bang helps bring two people together and works to make sure they survive when danger arrives. The puppy that is in the first of the story gets his story in Pets in Space #2 coming out in October.

A big thank you to NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I have read several books by Susan Grant and have enjoyed them. This novella was no different. It grabs your attention from the beginning. If you are looking for a laugh a minute really light hearted book this isn't it. This is intense with real life issues. Sometimes love is a challenge. I think most romance readers would enjoy this book. The setting is irrelevant-it could have been set anywhere. The alien setting for me makes it more fun. Try the book!!
