I really enjoyed this book and found it thrilling in places but wouldn't describe it as terrifying or edgy. However, it was a really good read and would read other titles from this author.

This is a disturbing and unsettling thriller combined with a ghost story. It is slow-laced, and forces the reader to distrust many of the characters in the book. Fans of gothic literature will enjoy it.

Zoe flies across the Atlantic to a Scottish island to have some time to herself, to get things into perspective whilst she thinks about her life and marriage. She doesn’t get much thinking time though because the minute she arrives is thrust into the mysteries of the house she has rented. Loved this from the first page, the way it grabs you wholeheartedly. A deliciously sinister story, spooky house, Victorian mystery all in a glorious setting, not to mention some decidedly odd modern characters too. Couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end - excellent book and well worth 5 stars!

A ghost story, not a psychological thriller as NetGalley posted. For full review, see tumblr https://joebloggshere.tumblr.com/post/174299057261/while-you-sleep-by-stephanie-merritt-if-this

I am currently developing a section of the school library that will present a diverse and eclectic range of contemporary crime and thriller novels. This genre has been so popular in terms of what is being borrowed, but I feel like the young people are sticking to 'what they know' in terms of titles or writers that they've already heard of or have seen their parents reading. My mission is to include more novels like this one and improve the range and diversity of fiction that they can choose from in order to expand their reading horizons. I absolutely loved this book. It kept me gripped from the very first page and without giving away any spoilers, was a dark, intense and satisfying journey. I think that the young people will love its distinctive voice as well as be gripped by the story and intrigued to follow it to its tense conclusion. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for intelligent, credible writing with a strong hook that won't let you go. Treat yourself to While You Sleep!

Loved this book, it was so intriguing that I read it over 2 days. Enjoyed picturing the setting on the Scottish Island (being Scottish myself) and the amazing sounding house. The twist made me gasp aloud, I truly wasn't expecting anything like it. Had me hooked until the very end.

When I first started reading this book I thought I was going to be a bit like the Daphne du Maurier books which have intrigue and mystery and are really enjoyable. Sadly it didn't turn out to be like them at all. Set on a remote Scottish island it's the story of Zoe, an American artist who has abandoned her family to rent a house (which it turns out is haunted by malovent spirits) and wants solitude, time to think and do her painting. It isn't until nearly the end of the book before we discover the reason for her travels across the ocean. I found it a book that I never really got into and found easy to put down - I don't really think it's a thriller, more of a horror book with a bit of romance and a bit of erotica. There are some things I liked about this book but equally there are some things I didn't, which is why I've only given it 3 stars.

A great book
Very eery, a different book to the style I normally read.
I was catptured from the start and wanted to know more. Lots of twists and turns in the story, Loved some characters hated others, wanted to scream and the book, and found it hard to sleep at night sometimes after reading.
Loved it

This is billed as a psychological thriller but it is more of a mixed genre - a supernatural romance/gothic thriller /haunted house /erotica, based on a remote Scottish Island. It was such a mixed bag I don't really know how to review it to be honest. Suffice to say it was ok.

I read this in one day and was devastated when I had to put it down for half an hour before I could read the finale!

Without giving anything away, this book is a subtle mix of human behaviour, psychology and supernatural elements. It's so well written that I was drawn in from the start as Zoe reached the island and settled into her rented home, the history of which all the locals have apparently been sworn to secrecy.

When she starts having strange dreams in the house and finding things being moved about, she has to uncover the truth of the past to make sure nobody gets hurt. The suspense of it all had me at the edge of my seat - how much of it was supernatural? How much of it was just people being people?

If you like atmospheric thrillers, which a slice of gothic horror thrown in, do yourself a favour and pick up a copy!

Not exactly as I hoped. I was hoping for a thriller but got more chic-lit in my opinion. Still it had its good parts.

While you sleep by Stephanie Merritt

Wow I'm astound this book is so weird, but brilliantly written.

There is no second guessing in this story you have to just keep going. The twist are extremely gripping.

Definitely a 5***** book.

I took a chance on reading this book in an attempt to broaden my reading horizons because as a self confessed wimp I don't tend to pick up psychological thrillers very often. Sadly I just couldn't finish this book.
That said, don't take my dislike of it as a slight on the author, or even the work itself, as it is a fantastically written book. It's just not to my taste. If you are already a fan of this genre don't let me put you off picking up a copy!

Wow what a creepy story! Very well written and kept me hooked from the very start. A real page turner and one I will definitely seek out in paperback!

This book is excellent. It was scary and dark with heartbreak and the fear of facing reality all rolled up into one riveting story. I read it under the covers when i read it at night! The story was revealed of a deep and dark past and was truly haunting in its content, with references to legends and stories from the remote Scottish island setting . The ending had elements of sadness and sorrow and yet spoke of a new start and a letting go of the past. There was also a suggestion of other worldliness and the hint of an immortal character at the heart of the tale. The story was written with real feeling and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've only given this three stars as I didn't finish the book. The reason for this was a find it too scary - the writing was good to enough to drag me in and needed to read in daylight hours and even then had to stop reading it!

A bit too much supernatural for me in this tale of an American painter secluding herself on a remote Scottish Island. How many times does one person really need to be told not to go into the creepy old house alone? Had a good sense of place: windy beaches, windy moors, rain, rain and more rain, but the daft central premise/twist was too obvious and too silly.

I can do ghosts in films no problem but a ghost story book is usually a no no for me as I find them so much more haunting. But after reading the description for While You Sleep I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone. I AM SO GLAD I DID.

Ive never read a book quite like this. While You Sleep is a tense, chilling, eerie and sometimes disturbing read that took me longer than it usually would to get through as I'm a night reader and some nights found that after just a few chapters, I needed to hide my Kindle for my own sanity. But I loved this book. I loved the story, the history of the house and the shocking ending. This book has convinced me to step out of my comfort zone and read more supernatural books.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was an interesting read with a satisfying conclusion and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to say that Zoe is a lot braver (or more foolish) than I would have been in her situation and the build up of tension in the hauntings was brilliantly written. Recommended.
