This was as much a mystery as a thriller and I enjoyed both aspects of the book. It was intriguing trying to find out what actually happened on that night of the car crash, why Kath cannot remember much about it, and why everyone is behaving so strangely towards her.

The story did meander a bit in the middle and I lost interest in parts, but nevertheless I was absorbed enough to want to make it to the end of the book to find out exactly what happened, and I was pleased I continued as the ending was great.

Just Before I Died is an absolutely thrilling psychological thriller by S. K. Tremayne. Kath Redway is almost killed in an accident on the beautiful Dartmoor National Park. As luck would have it, she survives with a few bruises and amnesia. But as time passes, her amnesia clears and with it come shocking realizations - that her 'accident' was not an accident at all and that her family may not be who she thought they were.

The story takes us on a heart-stopping journey with Kath as she desperately tries to uncover the truth and stay alive in a world filled with danger, menace, and terror. The suspenseful twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat as you eagerly await the resolution. This gripping tale of suspense is a must-read for fans of the genre and an amazing debut by S.K. Tremayne.

Just before New Year’s Kath Redway had a nasty car accident that involved a near drowning. She’s lucky to be alive and when she awakens from her coma she is delighted to see her daughter and hugs her close as well as her husband. However her 10 year old daughter Lyla is very distressed with events and her husband Adam isn’t very happy with her. To complicate matters Kath cannot remember what happened that fateful night. As Kath slowly pieces together what happened that night and gets fragmented flashbacks she realises that her life is still in danger.
I enjoyed this book. It is the first time that I have read anything by this author and I loved this book so much that I plan on reading more. I highly recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of escapism and my time out from a hectic world. The story grabs you from the outset and pulls you in and the storytelling really made it worth reading. Characterisation was on point and I know I will be looking out for new publications from this author or similar reads in the future. A recommended read. Gripping.

No story, no end. Not sure what the author is trying to convey. I'm at a loss . Is there a sequel? Not my type of read, couldn't finish this one sorry.

Once again SK Tremayne presents us with an eerie, psychological thriller set on the bleak and beautiful Dartmoor in Devon. Kath is married to Adam with a daughter, Lyla. At the start of the novel she is recovering from a near fatal accident that resulted in amnesia. Kath is happy, despite such a tragic event she feels blessed. Lyla her daughter is shy and has difficulty communicating all linked with her autism, however Kath suddenly realised that her repetitive speech is even stranger than usual. Bit by bit her memory begins to return an suddenly she’s not so convinced it was an accident. This chilling tale with it’s beautiful descriptions of the moors has you gripped from the start.

OMG Creepy as hell! It was a great story that kept me captivated throughout. In a market where we are surrounded by so many thrillers, this story really stands out. A must read!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.

After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.

I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.

I've read some of this author's books before, so I knew what to expect, but that doesn't mean I wasn't blown away! This was a thrilling read, and had me hooked until the very end. Highly recommended.

I’d seen a lot of mention of the words dark, brooding, atmospheric and unsettling among the release blurbs and reviews for this novel and this really intrigued me, so I was glad to be able to give this a read. Especially since “The Ice Twins” had been sitting in my to-read pile for a few months but I hadn't been able to give it the attention I wanted yet.

“Just before I died” got me hooked at the start. I was intrigued as to why Kath’s husband and daughter were treating her oddly following her near-fatal car crash and why her seemingly perfect life was falling apart. The descriptions of the landscape around the desolate, atmospheric setting of Dartmoor National Park, added to the hint of creepiness just enough without tipping the story over into an endless tourism description of the area and of a spooky landscape! There were a lot of twists and turns which kept me guessing throughout however towards the end it did almost get to be “oh no – not another one”. At times, it did feel a little repetitive in places too, but I found this easier to ignore as I was enjoying the plot overall. I did find some of the portrayals of mental health and learning difficulties a little difficult to accept at times. If the novel had been set back 20-30 years then maybe these elements would have been believable but in the current climate, it feels unlikely.

4/5 - Not without faults, but an overall enjoyable read and it wouldn't stop me reading other novels by the author.

Thank-you to NetGalley for providing me with an Advance Readers e-proof copy from publishers HarperCollins UK. All opinions are my own and are impartial and free from bias.

Just Before I Died is the story of Kath who lives in the wilds of Dartmoor with her husband, Adam, and daughter, Layla. One of the first things we’re told is that Kath recently had an accident and escaped drowning in a lake. However, quite quickly we’re told that it was no accident and it’s believed Kath tried to kill herself. The question is, why?
Crucial to this story is the fact that Layla exhibits some stereotypical traits of a child with Asperger’s. Her behaviour causes certain events to take place, which cause Kath to consider there’s more to this story than she can remember.
And she’s right.
What we eventually get is a story that goes way way back, uncovering a number of secrets and forcing people to confront details that are less than pleasant. Some of the story that unfold before us seems (if I’m being honest) unnecessarily sadistic and there’s a sense of details set up simply to create a certain set of circumstances.
I found the way Kath recalls key details just before a significant advance in the story quite unrealistic and frustrating. Some parts of the portrayal of Layla were sympathetic, but I also found this (on the whole) to reduce Layla to a series of behaviours that would help advance/explain the plot.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this in exchange for my thoughts. It wasn’t quite my thing, but I hope I’ve explained why.

Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.

I have read all of the author's books and I have loved them. They are creepy and tend to have a supernatural element to it at times. This book just kept me guessing and I had no idea where the story was going. When the ending was revealed, it was quite shocking and definitely not what I expected. This is a really good psychological thriller.

I highly recommend this book as well as the author's previous books.

This was a definite 4-5 star read. Fast paced, with lots of twists and turns, which keeps you on the edge of the seat ready to know exactly what happens next. Love the thrillers with the chilling home life, and this really hit that nail!
Will be sure to highly recommend!

Clever and atmospheric, but for me, too long. I understand that suspense has to be built slowly, but at times I was bored. The Aspergers child was very realistically written, but the other characters were unsympathetic and with little nuance.
