This is an excellent thriller. I am not usually a great fan of court room dramas but this one is so different and goes far beyond what you usually expect. You know from the beginning that the serial killer is a member of the jury and the story of how and why they get there is amazing. You really have to concentrate as the twists and turns come thick and fast and you won't want to put the book down. I loved the character of Eddie Flynn, the conman turned maverick lawyer, although this is the third book featuring him, the book can definitely be read as a stand alone. Very cleverly written, just when I thought I had the story figured out, I was in for a shock! Brilliant, this one really does live up to the hype.

This is the 4th book in the Eddie Flynn series. I have to admit that prior to this book I had not read any of the series but I feel that this works really well as a stand alone book and if you are like me you will love this one and decide you need to read more.

Eddie Flynn is a defence lawyer who used to be a con man !! He takes on the case of defending actor Bobby Solomon, who is on trial for the murder of his actress wife and security man. The only problem being that the real killer is sitting on the jury and is determined to get a guilty plea !!

Not only does Flynn need to prove his client innocent he also needs to try and find the killer, as this is his one chance of convincing the jury that the wrong man is on trial. As well as all of this going on Flynn also has to deal with a couple of bent cops that are out to make Flynn pay.

This is a real fast paced court room thriller. The are plenty of twists and turns, especially towards the end of the book where everything starts to unravel.

If you love court room based thrillers you are going to love this book. All I can say is that if I am ever on trial for a crime I didn’t commit I hope that Eddie Flynn is fighting my corner !!!!

Thank you to Orion and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

I have to start by saying that this book has got the most attention grabbing tag line that I have ever seen on a book.

THE SERIAL KILLER ISN'T ON TRIAL.

HE'S ON THE JURY...

They were Hollywood's hottest power couple. They had the world at their feet. Now one of them is dead and Hollywood star Robert Solomon is charged with the brutal murder of his beautiful wife. This is the celebrity murder trial of the century and the defence want one man on their team: con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn.

All the evidence points to Robert's guilt, but as the trial begins a series of sinister incidents in the court room start to raise doubts in Eddie's mind. What if there's more than one actor in the courtroom?
Joshua Kane has been preparing for this moment his whole life. He's done it before, but this is the big one. This is the murder trial of the century. And Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house.

For Kane, time is running out - all he needs is to get to the conviction without being discovered and for Eddie, it's a race against time to get to the killer before the wrong man takes the fall.

What can I say, as legal thrillers go, it doesn't get much better than Steve Cavanagh's Thirteen! safe to say I absolutely loved this one.

Fantastically gripping? Guilty as charged!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for an advance copy in exchange for a fair and honest review

When I signed up for the blog tour for this book, I did not have a clue this was the fourth book in the series (should have done my research better), I saw the cover, read the tagline and I knew I had to read it. I mean check this out

THE SERIAL KILLER ISN'T ON TRIAL.

HE'S ON THE JURY...

Now come on, you mean to say you wouldn’t want to read this either! #thatbookthathook

A great pointer about this book is that it can be read as a standalone book, but now I have met Eddie Flynn on the pages I will be going back to read his other stories and ensuring that Mr Steve Cavanagh is on my list to watch from now on.

So the premise of this book is terrifying and when you meet Joshua Kane, I was damn near petrified. I think nearly every time it was his chapter in the book, I must have looked like I was catching flies as my jaw literally just stayed dropped. This man is one of the most terrifying men I have had the unlucky pleasure to meet in the book world (Although I am not sure I would call it a pleasure per se). The lengths he goes to, to perfect his plans, the cold calculating way he lives his life, and basically, everything about him scared me. Reminded me of an episode of Luther that freaked everyone where guy hid under the bed. Joshua doesn’t do that but he is like the bogeyman in the fact no one knows him.

Eddie Flynn, is a loveable rogue, (I just love his name! If my child had been a boy he would have been Flynn, so obviously I warmed him) his past is a checkered one as a con-artist, he was married to Christine and they have a daughter. Here I could have done with some previous knowledge of their marriage and history as it’s on the rocks now and he refers to an old case causing problems, so I want to read the other books to fill in the gaps, but seriously it takes nothing away from the story not knowing. If this was the first book in the series it would feel like we would be building to the past I was ok with not knowing.

Eddie becomes Bobby Solomon lawyer, as the up and coming actor, one half of a power couple is accused of killing his newlywed wife and head of security. The case is a slam dunk, there is too much against Bobby, he’s guilty, right? Eddie doesn’t think so, after meeting Bobby he believes he is innocent, no one is that much of an actor…. are they?

Courtroom dramas are my go-to in films and books, you live and breathe the case with the defence, prosecutors, the jury, the judge and the so-called convicted criminal. I love the background the defence goes through digging up the clues, all to prove Bobby’s innocence and the blocks that are in their way. I mean I would love to have been a lawyer!

This book did not let me down in any way, the writing was fast paced and I did not feel my attention waiver in any way at all. I actually did not want it to end! Aaaaahhhh I really can’t say a lot because there will be too many spoilers, please go and read this book, you will not be wasting your time that’s for sure!

What an amazing introduction to Steve Cavanagh – thank you for the treat of being on your tour!

*Thank you so much to Tracy at The Book Club, Orion Crime publishers and the author Steve Cavanagh for an ARC of this book*

This is the fourth book in the Eddie Flynn legal thriller series - I've read the first two (The Defence and The Plea) and still need to read the third (The Liar). It didn't matter that I'd missed one out, as it didn't take me long at all to get back into the characters' lives and remember how much I love Eddie Flynn.

Thirteen is such a clever read, with a highly intelligent and very organised serial killer (a master in deception) on the jury. So you, as the reader, know exactly who it is - or do you? This has a gripping, twisty plot from beginning to end, with an intriguing hook that pulled me in straight away. Although there are plenty of courtroom scenes, there's so much else going on too, from getting inside the mind of the serial killer to following Eddie's personal dramas.

This really is a nail-biting read - the type of book that's hard to put down and keeps you reading into the early hours. And it's also great fun. Even the courtroom scenes are fast-paced, shocking and highly entertaining.

If you like legal thrillers, courtroom dramas and/or serial killer crime novels with a fantastic lead character and plenty of humour, then pick up all of the Eddie Flynn series - and start reading them now!

So clever!

No single review can do this book justice. This is a crime novel but it strays brilliantly from the usual procedural plot. It goes off script massively, throwing twists your way like punches. This is a book that truly plays with its reader.

Cavanagh achieves this with admirable subtlety but precision too. Nothing is revealed too soon and, never too much. We don't know what's coming but we've heard enough to know we should be careful. This book demands your full attention...

There has been a double homicide. All evidence seems to point to a Hollywood movie star. You are part of the jury. Do you follow the evidence or do you look for more? Guilty or not? Who are you listening to?

In the past, I've always found that the more successful crime or thriller novels are those that involve the reader. The reader is a witness but also a juror. We feel involved enough to take sides. This is that kind of book, but better: we couldn't possibly be more involved. You are transported into the courtroom, watching as a trial unfolds. It really has you impatiently sitting on the edge of your seat.

I recommend this book to the readers looking for something significantly more exciting than the typical crime story. The readers who want to get into the mind of serial killer character - the perspective was chillingly convincing. Read this book - and try not to let it plague your thoughts.

I received this book through Netgalley.

What can I say, this is one of the best books I have read for a long time.. it had a unique plot, fabulous characters and a thrilling storyline. I have never read any books from the author but will definitely be putting his other books on my shopping list.

Wow. There has been so much hype and positive reviews for this book so I was honoured I got the chance to read it too and have my say! They was right… Everyone was right! What a brilliant book! Impressed.

Captivating, gripping, thrilling, fast paced! I now understand about the hype. Thirteen may be book number four in the Eddie Flynn series but it reads well as a standalone. I have not read any of the series before this book but after reading this book I MUST read this series!

I found Thirteen easy to read… It also contains short chapters. I love the cover of this book too. Thirteen is bound to have you hooked! A cleverly, crafty written story. A well deserved five stars from me. I would highly recommend it to you all. This book is what I call a sleep stealer and one you don’t want to put down. A must buy. A must read. I enjoyed every minute of this book and can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series!

When a famous Hollywood actor returns home to find his wife and security guard brutally murdered in his bed, life as he knows it topples under the weight of their demise and the realisation that all eyes and all accusations land at his door. Suddenly fans, cops and the rest of Hollywood suspect Bobby Soloman and are contemplating his motive. Did he do it for revenge? A way of getting out of his marriage? A chance to take the limelight all for himself? He and Ariella Bloom were a powerful couple, co-workers as well as husband and wife about to embark on a new phase in their careers. Did Bobby want her out of the equation? The evidence stacks up against him. A collective gaze watches him and fingers point in his direction. But what if there is more to this case. This is the murder trial of the century. And the world is watching.

When ex-con man turned defence attorney, Eddie Flynn is asked to join Bobby’s legal team, he is reluctant. He made a vow to himself a long time ago that he would not defend the guilty. He has made many mistakes in the past and now he is determined to protect and defend people he knows are innocent. This case could give him unfathomable success and hoist his name to incredible new heights, not to mention set him up for life but at what personal cost? His life is already on shaky ground. His wife keeps her distance and he hardly ever sees his daughter. She is growing up so quickly and he is missing it. When he is asked to look into the case and make his decision based on the facts that haven’t been offered to the public, Eddie agrees. And soon, he glimpses a new side of events. A different person to the murderous husband so many have painted The Star to be.

Eddie Flynn is such a wonderful protagonist. Extremely intelligent, determined, with a past as an ex-con that enables him to see things differently, like a new lens to observe actions and evidence and untangle knots where the truth and lies blur together. Although I really enjoyed his chapters, I loved antagonist Joshua Kane. ‘Bad Guys’ are my favourites and this character is one of the best. Kane is meticulous in plotting his crimes and executing his plans. He is someone who will both horrify and fascinate. Steve Cavanagh brings the tension and suspense that bubbles in a court room to life on the page. The detail and descriptions are extraordinary, so much so, I really felt as if I was sitting with the defence team or even with the jurors.

THIRTEEN is a compulsive, gripping new instalment in the Eddie Flynn series, which is perfect to be read as part of the series or even as a standalone. This is a genius, astounding new novel from Steve Cavanagh where guilt and innocence are fought to be proven, truth and lies prove to be breakable and two verdicts grapple on a knife edge. Stunning.

Gripping. Tense. Compulsive.

A superb thriller with more than enough twists and turns to satisfy the biggest critic. Great characterisation and the climax is full of tension and suspense. The fourth in the Eddie Flynn series, a series that defies logic and gets stronger and stronger with each publication. In Eddie Flynn, Steve Cavanagh has a hero that is both intelligent and likeable, a hero that's almost impossible to like. I can't wait for the next installment.

I've not read any Steve Cavanagh novels before but Thirteen is a clever legal thriller but now I've been introduced to defence lawyer Eddie Flynn I'll be reading more. In this case he has to find out who the real killer is of the actress wife of Hollywood star Robert Solomon when all the evidence points at his client. But via myriad twists and turns the real killer is staring him right in the face. Some of the clues feel a tad unrealistic but it's still a great read for fans of courtroom and legal drama. Many thanks to NetGalley and Orion for the opportunity to read and review Thirteen.

Oh this is a fabulous read! Think Lincoln Lawyer and early Grisham, a marvellous court drama that puts you in the head of the serial killer. I love that!

The characters are so real and interesting, the storyline twisting along, making it a riveting read that you really don't want to put down and a twist that you'll never guess at the end. Who to trust? Who to doubt? Isn't that at the heart of the best books? The plot is so clever, it gave me little shivers when I realised what was going on. And the way the two lawyers manipulate the jury - I find that element so fascinating.

This is definitely one of the best books of this genre that I've read and now I've found this is the fourth in a series, I'm delighted that there's three more for me to read.

Love, love, loved it!

The first thing I did after finishing reading this gripping novel was to go and buy the first three books in the series and ask myself why I never heard of Steve Cavanagh before. I was completely absorbed by the twisty plot and by charismatic defence attorney Eddie Flynn from the first page.

Although this is the fourth book that sees his protagonist Eddie Flynn in action, it can easily be read as a standalone novel. In THIRTEEN, there is a killer on the loose. We know his name, Joshua Kane, but he easily changes appearance and voice to take someone else’s place after he kills them. Now he is trying to get into the trial of the year, the one where Robert Solomon, a famous Hollywood actor, will have to defend himself from the accusation of murdering his wife and his security guard.

Enter Eddie Flynn. He defends only people he is sure they are innocent and after talking to Robert Solomon he knows Robert is innocent, but he also knows that he is hiding something. So he accepts to help Rudy Carp, a high-profile lawyer, in proving Robert’s innocence.

The character of Eddie Flynn is very likable. He is charming, honest, smart, and really good at his job and you also get a glimpse of his personal life as he dreams of a more normal and safer career that will allow him to get his wife and daughter back.

I was hooked from the beginning in this fast-paced novel where everything happens in a few days and the tension and suspense are always high. Thrilling, compulsive, and twisty, THIRTEEN was one of these novels that I didn’t want to end and I can’t wait to read more about Eddie Flynn and his dangerous and twisty cases. I’d like to thank Orion Books and NetGalley for providing me with a proof copy of the book.

There is no such thing as bad publicity. Or is there? Hollywood starlet, Bobby Solomon, seems to have it all: a beautiful wife, a film about to be released and his own reality TV show. All this comes crashing down when the body of his wife and her alleged lover are discovered at the marital home, and Bobby is the only suspect. Although high-profile cases are not his thing, defence lawyer, Eddie Flynn, takes on the case as he senses that everything is not as it seems, daring to believe that Bobby could, in fact, be getting set up. Cold-blooded killer, Joshua Kane, definitely knows a lot more about the case, so much so that he has managed to find himself a spot on the jury. Bobby’s fate may be in his hands…

I admit that courtroom dramas have never really appealed to me but there has been so much buzz around Thirteen that I felt I had to give it a go. (Plus, I’m a regular listener of the author’s podcast, Two Crime Writers and a Microphone). All I can say is, if all books of this genre are as good as this one, then I might just be a convert!

I warmed to Eddie Flynn immediately and, although this is the fourth book in the series, never felt as though I was missing out on his back story. I enjoyed reading his courtroom scenes and could quite easily see how some of the jurors appeared to be hanging on his every word. A man of integrity, despite his con-man past, Eddie is the perfect protagonist and would definitely be someone I would want on my side if I found myself in Bobby’s situation!

The story is a dual narrative, the other main character being the killer, Kane. He is a truly heinous character and yet an unbelievably fascinating one too. We find out the extent of his nature quite early on in the book when the life of a man is decided upon by the toss of a coin. When the true extent of his crimes and the lengths he will go to to continue his ‘work’ are revealed, he definitely became one of the worst serial killers I have read about in recent years.

Thirteen has great characters and a novel idea for a story and is one of the few books that definitely lives up to the hype!

I really enjoyed Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh, I hadn't realised it was 4th in a series, I will be going back to the beginning of this series and reading the first 3.
Fast paced and kept me reading well past my bedtime because I couldn't put it down!

With thanks to the publisher for the copy received. Thirteen is the second full length novel that I have read featuring Eddie Flynn. And what a brilliant novel it is and it has served a reminder that I need to read the two that I missed.
It is a court based drama, which you can gather from the synopsis, but the first half of the novel concerns Kane and his attempts to be part of the jury on the case involving a Hollywood celebrity. It also focuses on Eddie trying to find a way of clearing his client’s name. What the author does so well is his different personalities. He shows the ‘showbiz’ side to the top named lawyers who are only interested in getting their names in the papers and who have no interest in justice. And he does the ones who are in a situation they have no control over. There are only a couple who do the job for the right reasons. One of these is Eddie. Eddie is different to the others, he has a conscience, a dubious past and a wrecked marriage. But he refuses to back down, believing his client is innocent.
The parts of the novel that involved Kane were sinister. The reader knows from the prologue what he is capable of and he gets worse. There is nothing that he will stop at to ensure that he will be on he jury. I had no idea who he was or how far he would go to do this, nor did I know why. He is only ever identified as Kane, not the person he pretends to be.
I don’t read much court based drama, they sometimes feel a little cold but this series is different to all the others. This is a series that has a lawyer who despite his past and his faults, is honest, down to earth and has a good heart. He wants to earn a living, who doesn’t? but he wants to do his job to the best of his ability for the right reason.
I can’t wait to see what he gets up to next.

WOW! Eddie Flynn is back in his best case yet, this time defending a Hollywood star accused of murdering his wife and head of security.
Once again the writing is sublime, the plot is fast paced and thrilling and the characters are well drawn. Although this is book four in the Eddie Flynn series it can be read as a standalone. Anyone who enjoys courtroom thrillers should enjoy this book.
Highly recommended!
