How to make democracy work is a very important subject. It sadly for all the authentic and well intentioned efforts of the author Brett Henning does not get a very good hearing here. The political desire of Henning to introduce "Sortition" into the democratic process is interesting but limited. in what it can accomplish. Using random selection as he suggests into the political process can not tackle the fundamental problems of our global society.

Sortition as he points out was a solution used in Ancient Greek city states, to solve problems of ancient Greek city states. All the technology and sensibilities of our society today does not bring that solution any more relevant to us. That a few unaccountable rich global magnates who have a strangle hold on the markets and industries of the planet could be afraid that the government it has under its thumb is now elected on an random basis is laughable.

If you wish to read a new way to fix an old problem this is not the book for you. If you want to hear someone offer an old political system as the solution to a contemporary problem then this book is worth a look.
