I requested this from NetGalley prior to release but as I hadn’t been accepted by the time it was released I bought the book. I loved it. Hilarious, real laugh out loud stuff that is absolutely relatable. I have now been accepted on NetGalley so thank you.

Ellen Russell’s moppets, Peter and Jane, are growing up, but life hasn’t changed much!

Oh dear. I really shouldn’t read Gill Sims in public places as I am in danger of getting myself arrested or sectioned. People tend to look askance when you’re literally crying with laughter and, just like Why Mummy Drinks, Why Mummy Swears reduced me to a giggling, snorting heap so that I couldn’t read on because of the tears of laughter in my eyes. Once again my own long suffering version of Simon had to wait patiently whilst I pulled myself together enough to read him the passage that had just had me sniggering like a lunatic. It doesn’t matter at all if a reader hasn’t previously encountered Ellen’s life in Why Mummy Drinks before reading Why Mummy Swears because the references to the first book are seamlessly woven into this story.

Gill Sims understands family, marriage and parenting dynamics completely and through Ellen’s comments is able to present what all of us might have felt or experienced at some point. The first person narrative made me wish I could meet Ellen and talk through some of her ideas, thoughts and opinions with her. At times I felt she had looked inside my mind and then articulated my thoughts far more eloquently than I could ever have managed. Although I don’t have children, I found Ellen’s honest descriptions of Peter and Jane and her relationship with them truly entertaining.

Why Mummy Swears has a sparkling wit and a fast pace through the different dated entries as a complete year in Ellen’s life passes. Very frequently Ellen uses dreadful language (the clue is in the title) but not once does it feel inappropriate because it is the basis of so much humour as well as the result of her frustration which makes her so very human and believable.

Whilst Why Mummy Swears can be enjoyed (and my goodness I enjoyed it) as a very funny entertaining read, Gill Sim’s consideration of the role of women in the home and work place is clever and thought provoking. She skilfully reveals the way sexist attitudes from both men and women perpetuate and I’d love to see both genders reading this book and pondering how they might respond in the different scenarios.

I loved Why Mummy Swears. Making me laugh aloud is no easy task and Gill Sims did it splendidly.

Without doubt, any parent would relate to the stories told in this book and will read it with a wry smile, mixed in with occasional belly laughs and memories of similar horrific incidents of their own. In my opinion, it is probably best read in short sessions as episodes can become too similar if all are read at the same time. Overall, this is a humorous read and we all need some light-hearted moments when taking care of children of any age.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a hilarious and entertaining story, detailing the ups and downs of being a mother in the current climate. It was light hearted and down to earth. Some of the repetitive use of exclamations and capitals were unnecessary but overall an enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book ...very realistic look at life, love , marriage , and work with all the swearing.
A relatable read and so funny because the situations she finds herself in are so recognisable to all moms out there.

Hilariously true to life book! Although I'm not quite a mother yet at 39 weeks pregnant the relationship between the couple is relatable! Very funny!
Will have to read the other books in the series as the years go on!

I could have written this book myself had I got a spare few hours per day or if I had eleventymilliom pounds so wouldn't have to work every day, could employ an au pair and a personal trainer to stop me getting a lardy bum !!!!!
I laughed so much at this book I cried and shouted out loud it is fabulous and exactly like me life. Gill captures a whole year of family life in this book, like the ever so important PTA Christmas Fayre /Fair? And all the family moments like where to go on Christmas Day ? Hating sibling until Dads new floozie appears then siblings join together against her and go to mums for Christmas Day, with all rest of family who fortunately you only see once a year
Then there was all the smaller little things picked up on like whose turn it is to cook dinner, getting dinner in ready made easy to cook bags. Meanwhile I slave making a week of meals and put in freezer and everyone eats whilst I am working late, not good
Absolutely delightful, funny, laugh out loud book recommend to any family with at least two children who have normal names!

As a parent to two young children, there is so much about Gill Sims books I can relate to. Why Mummy Swears had me smiling, laughing and looking forward to what the future has in store for me with nothing short of fear!!

If you think you would enjoy an open and honest look at motherhood and the reality of what that is REALLY like sometimes, I would really recommend this.

Why Mummy Drinks was hilarious and I couldn’t wait to read this. I’m so glad I did. I’m not a parent but I found so many things in this book made me laugh out loud. This book is great fun from start to finish. I was enchanted by it. I loved the part where the family have lunch in a self-catering café which is a hilarious nightmare because each person has their own menu quirk. This was a pleasure to read. I felt like I was reading a memoir at times because it all felt so real. I had the same reading experience with Why Mummy Swears. Ellen is such a real character I felt like I really knew her. The book is structured into months like a diary which made it easy to read. I loved how Ellen’s kids, Peter and Jane constantly open their mouth and make embarrassing observations. Hilarious. Why Mummy Swears is very entertaining.

A f**king accurate portrayal of life as a wife and mother. We disappear into the role assigned to us and reach for the Gin to self medicate- who can blame us. Ellen is all of us at some point- the swearing rants are to die for, as are the toe curling descriptions of home. I loved this book- it raised a smile at a difficult time for me.

Sometimes we can’t have it all, so we have a gin instead!!

An enjoyable easy read with many ‘relatable’ moments. A few LOL moments and even (at 1 point) a few tears. I took a while to read this as I wasn’t ‘gripped’ - can easily be picked up and put down

Very mixed feelings here. Bits I enjoyed bits I yawned over and bits I wondered why they were necessary. A bit overdone fro my liking, but maybe that was the mood I was in. Will reread at a later date

A mum, a dad and two kids. Dad's always away on fancy business trips, the son is permanently attached to his iPad and the daughter is determined to get an Instagram account and become an internet sensation. Meanwhile mum is trying to hold it all together and start a new job where she might have accidentally let people think she's a single party girl, rather than a married mother of two. How long can she keep up the facade? She has also taken on the PTA and the other parents are less than helpful.

Well, what to say about this book, other than the fact that I laughed all the way through from start to finish. This book was so wonderfully written and hilarious. All mothers should be made to read this book, in fact, I think all parents should be made to read this book.

I don't think I have a single bad thing to say about this book, amazingly written, with fantastic characters and a wonderfully humorous plot. I couldn't put it down. I cannot wait to read more by this author. In fact, I have Why Mummy Drinks on my TBR list.

Thank You to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Definitely the kind of book where you mumble "yup thats me" or "yup that's my life" a few times and just laugh out loud. Really liked it.

This book was so funny to read there were scenes that had me belly laughing loudly. The main character was quiet dramatic at times but that only made some of her rantings even more hilarious. One of my favourite scenes has to be the Christmas dinner at the mothers house (I don't want to give any spoilers away). If you want a book with plenty of laughs and a lot of swearing then you will definitely enjoy this book.
