Another amazing story by Claire North after reading a few of her books she is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.

This was a dark and interesting book with great writing, however I did have a few issue with it. Firstly I found it to be quite repetitive and the changes in timelines made it a little tricky to become invested in the story. The pacing was also a little uneven at times and I kind of felt that there wasn't enough plot to justify the length of this book. Basically it dragged a bit for me and I had to push myself to finish. I can tell that North is a talented writer but something just didn't quite work for me with this one.

The plot (in a spoiler-free nutshell): In a future where you can get away with any crime as long as you can pay the ‘indemnity’, Theo Miller, who works for the Criminal Audit Office putting a price on crimes and often the victims’ lives, investigates a murder that doesn’t quite add up.

The author: Claire North, otherwise known as Catherine Webb and who also writes as Kate Griffin.

It’s a bit like…a poetic Atwood-esque novel.

You should read it if…you enjoy reading novels without knowing what the fuck is going on, and you think punctuation is overrated.

You shouldn’t read it if…immersive mind fuckery is not your thing and just reading about life on a barge gives you travel sickness.

The worst bit: Being an almost 30 something and doing an 84k-style audit of your own life in your head and realising that the TY Beanie Babie collection you own is your only asset.

Rating 4.84/5

Final thoughts: The poetic style that the novel is written in is disorientating but dazzling, heightening the terrifying prospect of capitalism spinning out of control and the current political landscape spreading like invasive weeds. An original and thoroughly good take on the dystopian thriller novel. Time is…

84K was published on 24th May 2018 by Orbit. Thank you to Claire North, Orbit and NetGalley for the ARC

I have attempted to read this book more than once and just cannot get into it.
Its a shame as I loved the sound of the blurb, it sounded like it would be a fascinating read. However the pace of the book was too slow for me and it jumped about a lot. It basically left me feeling like it wasn't going anywhere fast.
On a positive note I love the cover image, it's simplistic yet very intriguing at the same time. I would certainly pick this book up from a book store shelf to read the blurb. The strange thing is that from the blurb I would most likely purchase this book to read. Sadly I didn't get very far into this book until I felt I had to DNF it and move on to another book.
I'm afraid its a one star and a Did Not Finish from me.
I will be adding these details to Goodreads etc.
