This is a well written family saga. It tells the story of a wealthy English family, the Valentines, who spend their summers in a chalet overlooking the Alpine village of Hext. They are a source of employment for the villagers, but their impact is much more than this.
It's a multi perspective narrative, which I enjoyed. This way, we could get into the heads of our characters, and got to know them better. At first, it was a bit difficult to figure out who is who, but afterwards, it becomes clearer.

I think this is more of a character driven family saga. The secrets are there, but I think they are not the center of the book. The writing is beautiful and atmospheric. It's a beautiful escape to the mountains.
I really loved it, so would definitely recommend.

I loved this book! Packed with a throng of interesting characters, and set in the enchanting scenery of the French Alps, The Valentine House is intriguing, exciting and delightful.
George, one of the younger generations of the Valentines, arrives at Arête, the house created the previous century by Sir Anthony Valentine and his wife Lady Charlotte. George arrives with his own tragic story, but also then explores the stories of those around him - the other Valentines including the mysterious Margaret; Mathilde, a servant of the Valentines (chosen as one of the village 'uglies' to work there), her son and grandson; and Costa, sometime friend of Mathilde.
The stories of every character are developed in detail, and pieces of jigsaw gradually fit together as more and more is revealed to the reader. I couldn't put this down - highly recommended.
