It's such a treat to reread this series. In this installment, Daine has grown in confidence and power. When a request for help comes from the Longlake wolf pack who once saved Daine's life, she and her teacher Numair set off. But the wolves have unwittedly covered a far more darstardly plot - one that threatens the Tortallan throne. It'll take every bit of Daine's hard won skil to save the day.

Sheer brilliance. Daine's character arc is very satisfying and Numair is wonderful as always.

This was a great sequel to Wild Magic and i once again found myself wishing i had had them when i was a young girl.
Daine is older now and her magic is a lot more instinctive so there is less explanation of the magic system than in the first book.
The characters again are wonderful and it was a joy to read about their adventures and the development of their friends ship. I tend to have a soft spot for books about young friends learning magic together and this book did not disappoint.

The second book in the Immortals Quartet has a less introspective feel than the first, as Daine has learned enough about her powers to start to act more instinctively. It's a wonderful, charming tale of friendship and magic, with the kind of utterly compelling characters that only Pierce can create. I fell in love with these books nearly 20 years ago, and I'm thrilled to see them being reissued so new readers can find them. I hope many, many 8 year old girls fall in love with them as hard as I did.
