I have to admit that I requested this book thinking it was the “new” Tim Weaver book due out in May. In fact it is the same book I purchased and read in June 2018. I have already posted this review on Amazon.
I have read all of the “David Raker” books in order and enjoyed them all immensely. This was superb. A shocking beginning, full of twists and turns and a satisfying ending. As well as being a compelling mystery it also gives background on David’s marriage to his late wife. I loved it and eagerly await the next.
I’d like to thank the author, netgalley and the publishers for approving me and providing me with this digital copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. I’m sorry that I had requested the book I had already read!

I've never read a book by Tim Weaver but was instantly drawn in by the plot of 'You Were Gone" and what a book it was. Although it felt like I had been reading the book for weeks, the author really drew out every single detail of the story and mystery to ensure no stone was left unturned. I loved the story and how the characters intertwined into each other's subplot. It was a delight and I would definitely recommend this for people who enjoy a good page turner in 2019!

Another author whose books I have never read before - this may be the first I have read but rest assured I am now going to seek out his previous books.

I didn’t realise when I started this book that it was part of a series but it can be read as a stand-alone. David Raker, a Missing Persons Investigator, is summoned to a local Police Station as a woman has turned up there claiming to be his wife. The only problem is his wife has been dead for more than eight years. The police don’t know what to make of it especially when the woman relays details of their life together etc. She claims that David has been ill and this is part of his illness that he ‘forgets’ what’s more an acclaimed Doctor backs up her claims. Is all as it seems? Is David losing it? Or is there something more sinister at work? The story follows David trying to determine what is happening and who this woman claiming to be his wife actually is.

This is an excellent, fast-paced story with lots of twists and turns and I was in total shock when the perpetrator was revealed - I didn’t see that coming.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

A really good read, what happens when your wife who you know has died comes back? A bit long winded but still an enjoyable read. Its one of those books that you are not sure where it's going. It is so well written you can feel the husband's confusion and disbelief

Another great crime thriller from Tim Weaver. Grabs you from beginning to end. A real psychological thriller, especially for David Raker. Great story.

Wow. What an absolutely twisted read. You Were Gone is the ninth David Raker story and sometimes an author can begin to waver a little when they have written about the same character for so long. Tim Weaver is not one of those authors. If only for the emotional response this story drew from me, You Were Gone might be Tim’s best book yet.

In not wanting to give away too much of the plot, I will say nothing other than that everything we know and understand about Raker from the past eight books has stemmed from the death of his beloved wife, Derryn. Had she not have passed, there wouldn’t be a Raker that felt compelled to find as many missing people as he could. There wouldn’t be a Raker that kept putting his own life in danger time and time again. How then would Raker react if he was told a woman had turned up at a police station claiming to be his dead wife Derryn? That is the basis for You Were Gone and all I will say about the plot is it is first class. Stunning. A real masterclass in how to write a truly thrilling and unforgettable mystery.

You Were Gone could be read as a stand-alone but I feel the interaction I had with it and how it affected me emotionally was because of how much I feel like I know Raker. His emotions throughout this story are palpable, from seeing his supposed dead wife in the police station to everything else that followed. Tim writes in a way that meant I was completely engrossed in this story, feeling everything that happened and standing alongside Raker as an invisible bystander. Raker’s confusion and pain is clear to see and as the story progresses I just had no idea how things would ultimately end and I couldn’t read quick enough to find out.

It’s sometimes hard to talk about a story when so much of what you enjoyed centres around the incredibly intricate and twisted plot, and that is the case here with You Were Gone. I was so invested in this story that by the end of it I felt like I’d been put through the wringer alongside Raker. The ending was nothing short of perfect and even almost made tears fall it was that good. This story had everything going for it and it isn’t one that I am going to be forgetting in a hurry. It’s a hugely chilling read with some powerful writing and storytelling that further cements my love for Tim Weaver’s books and means that once again I must now recommend them to anybody who will listen. Sometimes the best thing you can say in a review is READ IT. So go and get this book, read it and I guarantee that you too will be blown away by this unforgettable story.

Utterly baffling and brilliant.

Another fantastic crime author that has managed to slip by me and now I have the delightful opportunity to catch up!

Fast paced and full of intrigue a brilliant read.

This is the second I've read by Tim Weaver. Enjoyed the first, and I get the feeling that he's going to be one of those authors that grows on me a little more each time. David Raker is a great character, and Weaver has tapped into a great vein of stories with the kind of cases he takes on. Vivid storytelling, page turning and compelling for sure,

His wife died, didn’t she?

A few days after Christmas a woman, claiming to be David Raker’s dead wife, walks into a police station with no phone or ID.

Raker is stunned as she looks just like his wife; she knows all about their married life and even private conversations.

Is this his wife and has he been living a lie for eight years or is it something far more sinister?

Another well written book by this author. I like David Raker, he is a ‘real’ character and easy to relate to, even with his numerous flaws.

Mr Weaver has a knack of making his characters come alive and evoke sympathy and empathy or hatred and disgust. A brilliant author.

However, this is not his best book. The plot is very far fetched and unbelievable, and in my opinion, very unlikely to really happen. It all got a bit rushed at the end, but by this time my attention was waning because of the storyline.

Tim Weaver’s books are always worth a read including this one. I recommend you read it and make your own judgements on it.

I have read all of Tim Weavers David Raker books and this latest one does not disappoint. From the surprise at the very beginning to the very end I was gripped. Unique idea for a plot. Thoroughly recommended.

I'm fairly new to the David Raker series, only having read one so far (the rest are loaded to listen to as soon as) but it's fair to say I was hooked from the very first page of I Am Missing. This book was no less gripping. In this novel, David is stunned to find out a woman claiming to be his wife has turned up in a London police station. The thing is his wife died 8 years ago. The woman certainly looks like Deryn Raker and knows things that only she and David could. But he saw her dead, buried her after a long and painful illness. THen she claims that he's said this before and a breakdown led to him believing she was dead. Nothing adds up and soon David is doubting his own sanity.

I really did like this book. Raker is a great character - a wee but brooding and often slightly amoral but still likeable and easy to root for. The author does a good job at putting doubt not just in his characters minds but also in the readers. I genuinely for a short time wondered if there was something to the woman's story. However, despite being enjoyable there was a bit of me that felt the ending went from thrilling to head-scratchingly daft. I can suspend my disbelief but the solution to this mystery would have made a Scooby Doo reveal look realistic. I don't want a true crime novel but I do want to not shake my head at what I'm reading. Which is a shame as until that climax I would have been giving this a glowing review, as it is I can only say it's an OK read.

I have read some of Tim Weaver’s books in the past so was eager to read his latest. To say it messed with my head is an understatement and I enjoyed the first part of the book immensely, trying to work out what was going on and who was the deluded one. I really liked the use of the italicised chapters where we get to see the inside of a very disturbed mind. The plot got a little far fetched with everyone conveniently having a property owned by a relative and the police taking such an interest in what initially was an unknown woman who had an arm injury and then disappeared. I’m sure real life policing has far more pressing matters to deal with than putting 2 detectives on what begins as a no crime case..

This is my first experience of David Raker and I am now going to read all the previous 8 (Yes 8!! How have I missed these books) Recommended.

I'll be honest, I really struggled with this book and didn't particularly look forward reading it until about halfway through the story. I think this was mostly because there was a hell of a lot of build up and a lot of receptive incidents where David was confused and it was easy to get frustrated, especially as you've idea what the truth is. That said, I do think this was a deliberate tactic to build up suspense – I am simply a bit impatient and wanted a faster pacing plot. The book definitely left you wondering who was telling the truth and I did enjoy this element of the story.

Really enjoyed this. Is his wife back from the dead and he’s the one who is ill? Of us it an elaborate and bizarre plot? It’ll keep you changing your mind over and over- now going to buy for my daughter.

I really enjoyed this book, the first time I’ve read anything by this author and I will certainly be seeking out other titles.

Wow talk about crazy! I loved this book I had no idea there were 8 before it in the series as this could have been a stand alone book, what a seriously good book of which I enjoyed immensely. I couldn’t figure it out, a guy thinks his wife died 8yr ago but then she appears at his work very alive, looks like his wife, but was Raker going mad, she says he is, the Drs say he did, was she his wife? You’ll have to read it and find out!!!!!

This book messed with my head! Dark and disturbing. A real psycho story in the true sense. As each chapter unfurled, the plot became deeper and darker and the deceit spinning around the main character dragged him deeper into its web. A web I couldn’t see him unfurling. The story is written so well there’s no way I could see what was coming. A real page turner. I loved the very end however. It was beautiful and made me feel poignant, sad and happy at the same time. A truly excellent book.

Latest David Raker mystery starts with a phone call from the police to tell him his missing wife has turned up but his wife died 8 years ago. I usually enjoy Raker stories, but this one not quite as much. Improbable storyline especially in this day and age when it’s possible to prove/disprove things quite easily. Also not mad keen on books when no one believes a word the main character says - “there’s a body, no there isn’t” type of thing for example. Plus it was way too long on this occasion and could have been cut by a third without spoiling the story. Loved the way it was written apart from the fact it was over long and there was plenty of intrigue, enough to keep turning the pages to find out who and why. Look forward to the next David Raker tale!
