I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

My first read from this author, and certainly won't be my last!
Putting the protagonist in a terrifying situation, this read definitely had my heart pounding. I think this is one of every woman's worst nightmares, waking up in a strange place, and not being able to remember what happened the night before. I've never been close to being in this situation, but I could only imagine what must of being going through her head!
And the mystery guy?!? Shocking!!!
With a main character I found myself rooting for, and a shocking reveal, I would definitely recommend this one. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

My 5* review for The Girl I Used To Be by Mary Torjussen.
"The morning after estate agent Gemma Brogan has dinner with a prospective client, she's furious at herself for drinking so much. But there will be more to regret than a nasty hangover.
Suddenly reminders of that night start arriving : A photo of a hallway kiss. A video of her complaining about her husband. And then a package. The problem is she doesn't remember any of it.

As the blackmailing and menace continue, Gemma fears for her marriage. The feeling that her life is spiralling out of her control takes her back to another night years ago that changed everything."

A great psychological thriller that had me gripped from beginning to end and the pace did not let up. I read late into the night because I was aware that what had happened to her at the hotel, was all entwined with something at a party from her past, and I was desperate to work it out/find out. It was easy to relate to Gemma and her family and understand her terror and paranoia at what was happening to her. The characters of David, Rachel and Gemma were well written and the combination of her trusting them, then doubting them made for a great triangle of characters and suspense.

The ending was superb in my opinion and I cannot wait to read more from this Author.

This books tells the story of Gemma. Gemma is looking for a break from her life

She takes her work up on the offer of a breakaway.

She meets someone on her first night, who she thinks is the perfect gentleman. However, when she wakes up, she remembers nothing.

Gemma is then faced with further difficulties and has to uncover secrets from her past to save her from the future.

The book was a great psychological thriller, packed full of twists and turns.

The book was full of tension and a real page turner.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

This was my first encounter with this writer and I am now eager to read more!

The synopsis of this story captured my attention and it drew me instantly. I could relate to Gemma's character and was swept away by the tale which unfolded after the night in question. Although the situation was like something out of a nightmare, the characters were believable and Gemma's reactions to the events were not questionable, as we find in many psychological thrillers.

This was a fantastic introduction to Mary Torjussen's work.

This was a good book from an author I haven't read before. I'll look forward to reading what she releases next.

Brilliant page turning book. Lots of mystery, lots of stupid decisions and a full baggage of past to get through. Look forward to more books.

2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
Rather disappointed with The Girl I Used to Be as I enjoyed Mary Torjussen's first book Gone Without A Trace. This one was almost a chore to read, with a tedious and repetitive plot, unremarkable characters, unrealistic dialogue and predictable story lines. It completely lacked the intrigue, substance and tension of the first book. A promising idea, but not very well executed. I won't rush to read another book by this s author.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Headline Publishing Group for the ARC.

Wow, absolutely loved this book! I felt so sorry for Gemma and the situation she found herself in. As the tension builds I couldn't wait to find out how it unfolded. The two main twists were really good. The first one really surprised me and in hindsight, while the second one was probably a bit more obvious I still didn't see it coming. Highly recommend this book. It kept me gripped and I kept finding excuses to sit down and read a bit more. I'll definitely be reading more from the author in the future!

This was a gripping psychological thriller. It was easy to read and I got through it in a couple of sittings. There were quite a few twists and turns that I certainly didn’t see coming. Very enjoyable book.

Gemma runs her own Estate Agency which involves working unsociable hours. Her husband Joe stays home and looks after their son Rory, which has become a bone of contention between them as Gemma would like to spend more time with her son!!

Gemma is away for the night on a business trip for the night and has dinner with prospective client David Sanderson. The next morning she wakes up hungover, not remembering much about the night before.

The problems begin when she starts getting messages and it seems like she is being blackmailed. But why and what did happen that night?

It is an easy book to read, you can’t help but feel the despair Gemma is going through and the sheer panic of trying to carry on a semblance of normal life, while everything is crashing around her ears.

If you are into psychological thrillers then this book is for you, the scenario could have happened to any woman and you can’t help but read this thinking what would I have done if I were in this situation?

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Mary Torjussen's debut novel 'Gone Without A Trace' released in November 2016, I was eager to read this follow-up psychological thriller. Needless to say, it didn't disappoint.

The book opens with our main protagonist, Gemma, and her friend attending an end -of-year school party having passed their exams with flying colours. Gemma drinks a substantial amount of alcohol and ends up falling asleep in one of the empty bedrooms. The narrative then jumps forward by fifteen years. Gemma is now happily married to Joe and has a young son, Rory. She owns her own estate agency but needs to work all hours god sends in order for it to be worthwhile and allow her family to live a comfortable life, whilst husband Joe is a stay-at-home dad. One day a new client, David, comes into her office, and she commits to showing him around a variety of different properties herself. Gemma then takes a work trip to London for an important conference and incredulously bumps into David (what are the chances?), and they decide to go for lunch together as friends. Gemma once again drinks too much and finds that she cannot remember some of the earlier evening, a whole part of the night is missing from her memory. Was David really interested in purchasing a property or was it a way to get close to her? Who exactly is he and what does he want with her?

This is a drama-filled, suspenseful and enthralling read. I particularly loved Torjussen's writing style which was beautifully readable and flowed well. The short chapters also appealed to me and helped in ensuring this was a quick read. Gemma is a character you really care about, and you cannot help but feel for her as she ends up in almost the same situation she was in fifteen years ago, albeit through her own doing. The pace is pretty darn perfect, and there is plenty happening throughout. Some of the twists were slightly predictable, hence the reason this is a four-star read rather than five-star. However, this was so well written that it didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the novel.

Many thanks to Headline for an ARC. I was not required to post a review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

The Girl I Used To Be is the first book I’ve read by Mary Torjussen and will definitely not be my last.
Gemma is the main character here and she is so believable it makes you think that you could be her and the things that happen to her could also happen to you and that is down to the fantastic writing as it is both descriptive and also very good at getting you into Gemma’s mindset.
This book moves along at a good steady pace and keeps you enthralled all the way through, it is a high suspense read and you are drip fed information throughout like most psychological thrillers do but that adds to the intrigue in this book.
I’m trying not to go into the storyline as you are definitely best coming in blind but it does cover sensitive issues but is done well and not graphically. This is a top ten read of 2018 for me down to the writing style, the believable characters and the suspense that is held all the way through.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Headline for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

This is a twisty psychological thriller that has two parts and is voiced mainly by our protagonist real estate agent Gemma Brogan. Gemma is married to Joe and they have a young son called Rory. When Rory was born Gemma and Joe agreed that Joe would be a stay at home dad while Gemma got her business up and running. But four years later, real estate sales are declining forcing Gemma to have to work more and more hours which means she hardly gets to see her son. Gemma loves her husband and would never do anything to put their marriage at risk but occasionally she can't help resenting all the time that Joe gets to spend with Rory and Joe's seeming reluctance to find a job. One night whilst away on a business trip Gemma agrees to have dinner with a client (David) what harm can a innocent meal and a few drinks do. Only the next morning Gemma wakes up in her hotel room with a raging hangover and no memory of what happened the previous night. Fighting her feelings of unease Gemma returns home and tries to move on with her life just like she had to after another fateful night fifteen years ago. But then she starts receiving mementos from her night at the hotel and as the campaign of terror intensifies she realises that she is being blackmailed.Desperate to find out the truth but also terrified of what she will discover she tries to find David but he seems to have mysteriously disappeared. Who is behind the campaign against Gamma and why?

I struggled to feel any sympathy for Gemma at times as this story unfolded, she spent a lot of time in the first part of the book whinging and whining about her life and everything Joe did and she made some seriously stupid decisions. I couldn't understand why she couldn't be honest with Joe when she realised how serious the campaign against her was. I would have liked some chapters that were voiced from.Joe's point of view because we only see him through Gemma`s eyes so we only get a biased view of his character. In the second part of the book the chapters alternate between Gemma and another female character and the truth begins to emerge, layer by layer eventually culminating in chilling stand off between Gemma and her twisted tormentor.

This is a gripping, twisty thriller that keeps the reader guessing, has some unpredictable twists and more layers than a onion. The characters were vivid and relatable, some likeable, some not so and some it was hard to decide either way. Gone Without A Trace was one of my favourite books of last year and although I didn't enjoy this one as much I never felt like not finishing it and I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

My first book by this author and it did not disappoint!!!
I absolutely loved this book I had no idea where it was going then when I did it went in a different direction. A really gripping read with plenty of twists and turns. Full of suspense and drama.
I have to say it was very, very cleverly written by keeping you guessing to the very end, that was one final plot twist I did not see coming.
I would definitely read more of this author's work.

4 Thrilling Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This was a quick compelling read... The true brilliance of this book is the fact that gemma the main character could be any of us.... she could be you... she could be me... so throughout this entire book all I could think is..... what would I do in this situation? And there are definitely no easy answers... and truth be told even after finishing this book I still have no idea what I would do!

Gemma has a pretty good life... a loving husband, a beautiful son, a successful business.... however Gemma is a bit stressed out and a little jealous of her husband Joe getting to stay home with their son... so one night while away at a conference she decides to cut a little loose and go out to dinner by herself... she wakes up the next morning with a killer hangover and no memory of the night before... last thing she remembers is having dinner with a male colleague.... this is where you ask yourself, what would I do in this situation? Would you tell your husband? Would he trust that you did not cheat on him? Do you trust that you did not cheat on him? To make a bad situation worse a month later Gamma starts receiving blackmail pictures and correspondence.... The more time gemma spends debating whether or not to confess to her husband what is going on, the larger hole she digs herself and the more lies she tells....

Reading about gemma navigating her self through this complex situation was so engrossing... she was so relatable and likable you really wanted her to figure things out... as the book progresses there are some definite reveals and twist that I did not see coming... so perfectly paced... I seriously finish this in a day, could not put it down! A fabulous thriller from start to satisfying ending...

Strongly recommend to all my psychological thriller loving friends and if you haven’t jumped on the psychological thriller bandwagon yet, what are you waiting for???

*** many thanks to Headline for my copy of this book ***
