Martha Gellhorn and Ernest Hemingway - to me are two of the best writers of the twentieth century. They wrote with verve and passion and used language to really convey more than a good story - a story to live alongside. Paula Mclain's book Love and Ruin is the story of those two writers finding each other, loving each other and ending in ruining that great love. She has written in Martha's voice and I had often to remind myself that this book wasn't actually written by her - I found her style and her use of language equally engaging and almost too intense. There were times when I wanted to weep for Spain and for their love. A really good read - I may have to start again.

I loved The Paris Wife so was very excited when I saw that this one is about to come out and to receive an ARC.

I enjoyed this book very much. The historical facts interwoven with some fiction made, again, for a really interesting read. Once more we get a glimpse into Hemingway's life- this time with Martha Gellhorn. I can't say it endeared me to him as a person (same as in The Paris Wife) but I was certainly fascinated with Martha Gellhorn.

McLain does a fantastic job not only of describing and shaping the two main characters but also of setting the scene of what was going on in the world around them at the time of their tumultuous relationship.

Even though fiction, it felt like reading a memoir and upon finishing the book I wanted to know more about Martha- always a good sign for a historical book in my opinion.

Great book- read it!
