Olivia is a professor, a TV celebrity and now a fiction author. She is on the cusp of launching a novel about a female scientist who broke the mould and championed the female cause, Annabel. She has based the book on a diary she found and has had help from Vivian, a strange lady who lives in Annabels family home and is the carer of Annabels cousin. Vivian is a weird person, very intent on doing everything by the book and develops a bit of an obsession with Olivia. She lives alone in the old house with her dog, surrounded by history and ghosts, one of which torments her at night, hence the title The Night Visitor. Olivia is living on a knife edge, she is just about to launch the book, her marriage is not going well and she is convinced she has a stalker.
This book is filled with tension as there is a lot going on behind the scenes. I enjoyed the feeling of waiting for the cards to fall. However the two women are not very likable, Claire is selfish and vain and Vivian is just strange. A lot happens in the last couple of chapters where it all comes together but at times earlier in the book it is a bit drawn out
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and Lucy Atkins for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review

This was a well-written, engrossing read, and I just loved where the tension was lurking just under the surface... you never knew when it might blow up!
Recommended.

Thankyou to NetGalley, Quercus Books and Lucy Atkins for the opportunity to read a copy of The Night Visitor .
I found the book to be a good read. There were a few twists and turns in the storyline to keep the reader engrossed.
A perfect read for a rainy day afternoon with a good glass of wine.

Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. Olivia has the perfect life and Vivian is jealous, lonely and not very nice. I loved this book.

Such a good book. A tale of lies and obsession. Creepy in places and totally gripping. Secrets have a way of coming to the surface. Really recommend this book

A well written book that twists and turns. Unfortunately, I struggled to really connect with the story, but I think that is a 'me' problem, because the writing style was very good. I think people will love this book, but not me I'm afraid.

A fantastic read. The first Lucy Atkins book that I’ve read, but it definitely won’t be the last. Great character development of both Olivia and Vivian throughout. A number of twists and turns which mean that the reader is guessing right to the end.

The Night Visitor by Lucy Atkins was such a good book. It is the first by the author that I have read and I will definitely be looking out for her again.

Professor Olivia Sweetman has the perfect life - she has 3 kids and wonderful husband. She is a TV presenter and a well respected historian. Now she is launching her best selling book based on the Victorian diary of Annabel Burley. Her secrets and deceits are threatening to be exposed - just how far will she go to protect her reputation?

Thanks to Quercus Books and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest opnions.

Really enjoyed this ,I do enjoy the themes of intrigue and obsession and this has it .
Can take awhile to build but I don’t mind thatand something generally happens as u reach each chapter
The ending I enjoyed and was fast paced and u anticipate something happening but to which one ?
Vivienne was well drawn and thought out and the plot had clearly been given time by the author
Only question I had was why attempt to diss the thing u discover that someone else has said is theirs and not fight for it to be seen as yours ,though clearly as a woman it’s hard in those times to be heard but it wd have been hard anyway trying to disprove something as well as to prove something
Though clearly aided to the plot so not overly bothered
Good read clever women leads and you feel for them both compleatly as well as feel uncomfortable by their actions ,they are both flawed and actually similar despite the Air diffirent game back grounds and so Viviana prove differently her point in a way ,we can, when threatened or in a right spot do anything to try and reclaim our lives at a moral cost to our principles
Tanks so much to netgalley and publishers 😀

Would read another of this authors

This is another book I was attracted to because of the pretty and unusual cover (hardback version: scarab beetle). The other thing that caught my attention was the mention of a Victorian diary - I'm a sucker for stories with old diary entries. Although, as it turned out, there were no historical flashbacks in this one!

The Night Visitor is about Olivia, a TV historian, who is finding it impossible to juggle family commitments with her high-flying career. When she comes across the Victorian diary of one of the first female doctors she knows it will make a brilliant book, but she can't spare the time to do the research. So she hires Vivian to do the work for her. Vivian takes care of the dilapidated gothic house where the diary was found and was apparently once a university professor - the perfect research assistant. Except Vivian sees herself more as Olivia's co-writer and friend, and she has ideas for lots more books that they can write together. Oh, and she believes that every night she's visited by a 'ghost' who wants to kill her...

The Night Visitor is particularly clever in that I felt sympathy for the character whose viewpoint I was reading, but as soon as the viewpoint changed so did my allegiance! I don't think I would have liked to have been friends with either of these women in real life but they were incredibly compelling to read about. Creepy and deliciously twisty, I couldn't put this one down. Some of the twists I guessed, some took me completely by surprise. And although I never thought I'd say this, I found all the stuff about the beetles completely fascinating! Particularly clever is the way the author links the different types of beetles and their traits to the behaviour of the humans.

Brilliant stuff, and thoroughly recommended for anyone who loves psychological suspense and character-driven mysteries. Another of my favourite reads this year.

Thank you to Lucy Atkins, Quercus, and NetGalley for my copy of this book, which I received in exchange for an honest review.
