A timely oversight into the dangers facing society in the coming years. Written in a clear and concise manner, this engaging book outlines the worrying developments in technology, particularly relevant in the wake of the recent Cambridge Analytica and other privacy scandals. But helpfully, rather than being left to despair, the author provides several steps that we can take, as individuals and collectively to change course. Highly recommended.

The People Vs Tech is a fascinating and accessible look at how digital technology is affecting modern politics and democracy. Bartlett focuses on certain pillars of democracy that he sees as under threat from technology and uses high-profile (Trump's election campaign, bitcoin) and lesser-known examples to illustrate this. Despite the tech focus, the book is not filled with jargon, and explains concepts whether they are technological, political, or otherwise.

This book is for people who want to explore beyond the odd long-read article on Cambridge Analytica, but also don't have the time or expertise to dive fully into the topic of technology, big data, and politics. Bartlett concludes with his suggestions for fighting back, which undercuts the doom of his vision of the technological future and gives the book a practical conclusion. The People Vs Tech is accessible enough for those worried by the news (or by Black Mirror) but without an in-depth knowledge of what the articles about algorithms and data might mean.
