Due to a passing in the family a few years ago and my subsequent health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for years after the bereavement. Thank you for the opportunity.

A collection of essays intended for the reader not familiar with Shamanism. Not a how-to by any means, but more from a philosophical approach.
Interesting enough.

*I received this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

This collection of short essays from various Shamans create a great Beginner’s Guide for the novice reader. Each contributor delves into one of the many various aspects of shamanism - ranging from cultural appropriation and indigenous practices to soul work and spiritual healing. While this book does introduce important concepts related to shamanism, it does not give specific methods to practice is. By doing this, the reader can focus more so on the philosophical aspect surrounding shamanism to give them a better understanding and respect for this ancient practice before they just delve into practicing such a sacred art.

I enjoyed this book very much. It is a broad based view of Shamanism from many differing opinions. I found it informative,, helpful and interesting. A definite plus for anyone interested in the subject and seeking opinions from the many experts included in the book. Very well done.

I knew nothing about shamanism before reading this book, which was interesting because of how different it is from everything else I previously knew. It might be good for a comparative religion class.

Trevor Greenfield has edited an anthology of essays that address many broad ideas in Shamanism. In many ways, his contributors are successful in answering the title question. The contributors touch on many ideas within the umbrella of shamanism - indigenous practices, spiritual healing, animism, animals, soul work, and cultural appropriation.
I liked the wide view that was presented. I learned a lot about what shamanism is. I did not learn specifics for practicing. I am very okay with that - I got exactly what I wanted from the book. I do think a reader looking for specific techniques could be disappointed.
I would definitely recommend Shaman Pathways - What is Shamanism? to anyone who is interested in learning basic information about an ancient set of practices.

An excellent book that draws together a variety of information from well established experts in the form of short essays. The author has chosen a wide range of subjects in the area of shamanism and it is a brilliant starting point. It is also good for anyone who already has some knowledge on the subject as it helps them to define which area they want to explore next. I thought it was interesting that exploring shamanism in your own area and culture was highlighted. A great book that made me want to start exploring this area again. Well balanced and well edited. I also liked all the information about the individual authors at the end. Thank you

A remarkable outlook on Shamanism. Although I'm not a practitioner and never thought to go search for a shaman I was fascinated by the traditional shamanism since my early age.Now I finally found a book that easily explains what is shamanism and their rituals. I like how the book explains both the traditional shamanism and the modern shamanism.

Enjoyable information on modern day Shamanism. Told from multiple view points, which was one of it's highlights. Got lots of usable tools, and found some new references that will be helpful.

I read Mirce Eliade's book about shamanism but I wanted to look at other sources and have a better understandment of what currently shamanism is.
This book is perfect if you are beginner and want to have an overview.
Recommended!
Many thanks to John Hunt Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC

I really did enjoy the series of essays that make up this book as it gave me insights into a subject that, previously, I had thought was "just one size fits all". Turns out that Shamans are not "all the same" but, in may ways, very different from each other although, in my simplistic view, they seek the same truths. Can't say that I understood all that the authors offered but I do know quite a bit more than I did before. Thank you all.

What is Shamanism? is the product of a collaboration between eleven leading Shaman authors and practitioners each tasked with the discussion of a particular central aspect or theme.

I had no idea what Shamanism was going into this book, the description caught my attention and I read through it.
The book provided an introduction to anyone wanting to learn and I felt might even provide an engaging read to those that understand Shamanism.

This isn't a book I'd choose for myself ... the publisher offered it to me ... but I enjoyed reading it. I was expecting a sort of recipe for shamanism; do this action to get this result, but that's not what it is at all. It's a history of shamanism in different cultures, how different people have experienced and used it in different cultures. It's a very interesting read and one I'll probably come back to in the future to reread.

Receiving an ARC did not affect my review in any way.
