London based, this new series by Oswald is a hell of a ride! Well written, great characters and gripping.

Took me 2 days to read this book, it’s a real page turner from begin to end!

Just would wish the cover was a bit more appealing, sadly this genre has a safe style of covers and this book is no different.

Brilliantly written with good twists and turns to the plot. Having lived in Edinburgh it especially resonates with me.

Oh I do love getting in at the beginning of a new series. Gripping opening that sets the scene for a rollercoaster ride. A pretty brutal tale sets the scene for a what I’m sure will be cracking new series

A fantastic read, gripping from the very beginning . Lady Constance (Con) is such a lovable character that one can easily relate to, from talking to the ghost of her ex boss and chasing across the U.K. to hunt for answers. Great read and I look forward to reading more escapades of Con.

I've never read any of Oswald's books before but had heard great things therefore I was really excited to learn of a new series starting. I was right to be.

No Time To Cry throws you right into the action as Constance receives a text from her boss but arrives too late. From there the story moved at a great pace. I loved Con as a character and thought she was a great mix of hard and soft and I cannot wait to see what comes next for her.

This is the first book in a new police thriller series. And it is a very promising start.
It involves a female CID officer who works in a team investigating organised crime in London. She finds herself a target and has to run from the bad guys.
The main character, Constance (Con) is a likeable woman. She is a committed cop who has a real knack for the role but is pushed to her limits when her personal life and job collide.
I enjoyed it and will definitely read the next one in the series.
Thank you #NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review #NoTimeToCry

Gripping, complex, and interesting (and featuring a brilliant new detective), this looks like the start of what's set to be a brilliant new series by James Oswald. I haven't read his Inspector McLean series but have heard great things, so I'm glad this lived up to that as such an enjoyable read.

Main character Constance (DC Fairchild) is brilliant - fiesty, inependent but with a sensitive side too, she's a brilliant character to follow and, though she can be spiky and angry at times (and who could blame her), Constance is likable and smart. She made the novel for me.

The plot is interesting and offered up a great mix of characters (some far less likable than others!), and the setting is great - I always enjoy books set in London and, although there weren't any references to concrete locations, the London in No Time To Cry still felt very real. The slightly supernatural element (I won't give anything else away) was, luckily, very 'slight' so I had no problem with it. I'm not usually a fan of mixing crime with any sort-of-supernatural elements but, as this was only a very small part and the story was so well crafted, I didn't mind it at all.

I raced through this novel in no time and am looking forward to future releases!

DC Constance "Con" Fairchild gets a cryptic text from her DI, Pete Copperthwaite, who is working undercover. When she reaches him, he has been tortured and killed execution-style with one shot to the head. Things go from bad to worse when Con is accused of being involved in his murder. On leave and under investigation, Con looks into the disappearance of an old acquaintance's sister and finds things hit closer to home than she would like.

I really enjoyed reading this first book in a new series by an established author. The pacing was good, no real sign of flagging in the middle, and the plot had enough twists and turns to keep things interesting. I am definitely interested in reading more about Con and I'm hoping that Cat (an actual cat) makes the odd appearance in future books.

TW: some violence and discussion of sexual abuse.

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Headline, for the opportunity to review an ARC.

I loved this. The pace was kept up throughout and you were hurled into the action from the very beginning. There was no dipping in the plot and I was gripped throughout. I haven’t actually read any of Oswalds other series but found this most enjoyable. Loved Constance and can’t wait to see what comes next for her - very believable engaging character. My only problem was Petes ghost it just felt like a cheap plot assist to get Con working things out. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and Wildfire for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

A good start to a new series for James Oswald, having to follow the DI McLean book he had a lot to live up to. while this book does have some similarity, like the strong police characters and slight supernatural undertones, it is a new series and hopefully a strong one.
The main character DC Fairchild is mixed up in her bosses murder at no fault of her own. She set about proving her innocents while also helping on old school friend find her missing sister. This is plot that run smoothly and give the reader time to understand the main character. very well written and engaging. It took me a few chapters to warm to DC Con Fairchild, after I did I really liked her tough, no nonsense hard shell. I look forward to the next book.

Oswald provides us with, not only a detective thriller to keep us guessing, but also a tale full of twisted deception and betrayal.
The main character should have a straightforward case of solving a mystery but finds herself entangled in a confusing case in which her own life is repeatedly put in danger - although sometimes a little too much for this to be entirely realistic for me.
Told in the first person, from the main character's viewpoint, we are kept busy as Oswald throws clue after clue at us.
My main misgiving is that, even upon re-reading, I still find the part about the sanctuary in Scotland a bit unnecessarily drawn out, although I appreciate it provides a safe haven for one of the main characters.
A rapidly moving detective read with plenty of guesses to be made along the way.

Hi Karen,
My Next review is:-

“No Time To Cry(New Series James Oswald))”, written by James Oswald and published in paperbackr by Wildfire on 1 Nov. 2018. 336 pages ISBN-13: 978-1472249890

Lady Constance Fairchild never expected things to go so spectacularly wrong but as a new Detective Constable in the metropolitan police on a special assignment deep undercover she had gone to the house that she and her boss were based at and was absolutely shocked to discover his dead body. The dead body of Detective Inspector Peter Copperthwaite, covered in blood and with a hole in the centre of his forehead from apparently a bullet.

Within a few minutes other detectives have arrived at the scene and “Con” as she prefers to be known as, is relieved and is very surprised to be told off by DCI Bain, Pete’s boss and eventually suspended. “Con” believes the more senior detectives think that she somehow revealed to criminals the extent of their enquiries and that they the criminals tortured and killed “Pete”.

James Oswald was a writer of Fantasy books before he was persuaded by fellow Scottish author Stuart MacBride that crime fiction was a better and more popular genre and so he launched the very successful Inspector McLean series of books which whilst they were police procedurals as is the Constance Fairchild series have an element of fantasy in them.

I was impressed with the new character and I look forward to reading both the Inspector McLean and the Con Fairchild series in the future. Recommended.

Best wishes,

Terry

A cracking start to a great new series! James Oswald never disappoints and this book is no exception. It took me a while to warm to Con but I think I like her gutsy nature.I look forward to the next book in the series and would recommend this to fans of the author who is fast becoming one of my favourites. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy. reviews on Goodreads, Amazon and Facebook.

Loved it, loved it, loved it!

What a fantastic first book in a new series - murder, suspense, action, intrigue, twists and turns aplenty and with the fantastic characters, perfect pace and gripping story line, this makes for one excellent book.

Highly recommended and I can't wait for the next one to see how Con develops and what she gets up to next.

Did I say I loved it?!?

Many thanks to the publisher, Wildfire (a part of the Headline Division of Hachette UK) via NetGalley for my copy in return for an unbiased review.

My first James Oswald book, and I really enjoyed it.
Con is part of the Organised Crime team in the London Met, then her boss and good friend is murdered. How does she become implicated in this? The story really branches out from here and ends up involving family and friends along the way.
A crime story with a difference, I loved the conversations with Pete throughout the book too, a sweet but sad touch

I have never read James Oswald before so I didn't know what to expect. The story centres on DC Con Fairchild discovering her boss's body in a botched undercover operation. Then starts her fight to find out what went so drastically wrong. Meanwhile an old childhood friend gets in touch to report her Sister missing.

The story plods along nicely based mainly in London but the Midlands and highlands of Scotland feature too.

Con seems a likable character and as this is the first in a new series I will be interested in reading more of her adventures in future.

No Time to Cry is the first in a new series, featuring DC Constance (Con) Fairchild, by James Oswald, the author of the DI McLean books. Being a huge fan of Tony McLean, I was not sure what to expect – could anything possibly be as good? I need not have worried. We are thrown in at the deep end when Con discovers the body of her boss who has been brutally murdered while working undercover. She finds herself under suspicion, suspended and fearing for her life. Not allowed to take part in the investigation, she goes in search of her childhood friend’s missing younger sister, Izzy, never dreaming that the two cases could be connected. Resourceful, dogged and good at thinking on her feet, Con eventually manages to break through the conspiracy and find out who is responsible for the death of DI Pete Copperthwaite.
Although set in London, this reads more like a road trip, and has a cinematic quality that would make a great film or TV series. The first person narrative lends immediacy to the story and helps introduce us to the world that Con inhabits; we are given just enough detail about her past throughout the book to keep us intrigued. James Oswald is to be commended for having written a thoroughly believable young female character, and not focussing too much on her appearance. I particularly like the inclusion of Rose, the cat with no name and the familiar hint of the supernatural – nods to the McLean series. The dark subject matter is dealt with in a sensitive way, although it is still deeply disturbing. No Time to Cry is a well-written, fast-paced and gripping story, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

No time to cry is a very well written book with two different crimes that are linked through the main character Con. I enjoyed the read but wasn’t too convinced with Con and her wealthy father but I won’t do a spoiler here.
I’ve not read this author before and he is certainly one I would try again.

This is a great start to a new series.
The book begins with the discovery of a Detective’s body and Constance, or Con, is under suspicion as she was the one to find the body and worked closely with him.
Con is confused by everyone’s attitude towards her and when she is suspended, she is speechless.
Someone then tries to kill Con and she realises there’s more to Pete’s death than meets the eye.
Con is then approached by an old school friend who asks for her help to find her sister, who seems to have disappeared.
As her investigations get under way, her life is in danger yet again and she discovers information about her ex colleagues that she really didn’t want to know.
Family secrets are also revealed and soon Con is facing a race against time to stay alive.
This is a great read and I can’t wait to read the next book.
Thanks to Wildfire and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
