I think this is a book I will be dipping into this book for many years. It literally is an A-Z of knitting, not a book you would read from cover to cover. I did think that the diagrams lacked a little, I couldn’t always work out what was meant and it would have been nice to have seen some photographs of some of the things, e.g. the ball winder.

I found the PDF version of this book far more helpful than the Kindle version. The Kindle version was six ways of messed up, but the PDF was glorious by comparison! This book is part knitters dictionary and part knitting encyclopedia. I learned so much! I found the section on reading charts extremely helpful as well as the section on Magic Loop (It's always been a mystery to me). There is a great section on gauge that every knitter should know, whether they choose to ignore it or not. Also useful is the section that explains the differences between English knitting and Continental, and so on and so on.
As I said, this book is jampacked with knowledge, and written by one of the smartest and most engaging knitters this side of Elizabeth Zimmerman herself. Buy this book for yourself if you're a knitter, or for a knitter you care about.

I plan on getting a dead-tree version of this book as soon as I can. I just know it will end up being the most consulted knitting book on my shelves!

I’m an avid knitter and I always keep an eye out for knitting books and videos so that I can recommend them to any friends who want to pick up knitting or are otherwise new to the craft. I also find it good to own some of these books myself for when I have a question or need to jog my memory on a stitch or something in that realm. One thing that I really like about this book is that it has information about what to look for in a yarn based on the type of project one is buying yarn for. It’s not something that I see often and it has some really good information on this topic, which is also extremely useful for people new to knitting.

The book has a nice layout that makes it easy to find what one may be looking for. It has a combination of written terms and graphs depending on the subject. It has a lot of useful information for new and old knitters alike. The only thing that I found it lacking was information on plant fibers and acrylic, especially since many people frequently use one or both. It’s not a problem for me, but it might be for someone who is interested in having that information all in one book. That said, I rather like this book and will definitely add it to the list of useful books that I recommend to others.

I really enjoy knitting...I’m just not that good at it!! I can knit a mean scarf but when it comes to actual patterns, all the confusing terminology puts me off.
This dictionary walks you through all that terminology, explaining what it means in simple terms. I think this dictionary is going to come in very handy when I’m attempting to use a pattern. There’s always a risk with a book like this, that the layout doesn’t work as an ebook. The layout is fine and I think this will be a really useful little book to have for any avid knitter! Four knitter stars for this book!

The Knitter's Dictionary by Kate Atherley will be a welcome addition to any knitter's reference shelf. The definitions are clear and concise. The illustrations are some of the best I've seen in a how-to book; When we knitters start a project it's usually because we have seen a garment or accessory that we want for ourselves, family, or friends. Unfortunately many of us start off without taking some very preliminary but important steps. Are we using the right yarn? The right needles? Have we adjusted the pattern for size? What happens if I want to use a different yarn? This book answers all of these questions and more. Because it is a dictionary, the book is small enough to slip into my knitting bag. Whenever I need her, Kate Atherley is right there giving me that advice and guidance I need for a finished project that is exactly what I wanted.

"The Knitter's Dictionary" by Kate Atherley is a thorough and easy to read compilation of the many different types of knitting terms and stitches and more that can sometimes confound a knitter. Knitters of any and all skill levels will find this book to be a useful reference. Descriptions and definitions are well written. The illustrations are clear. When terms may be called by different names, both are found in the dictionary. I look forward to picking up a copy of this dictionary to keep alongside my knitting stash.

I absolutely loved this reference book. Even though I have been knitting since I was a small child, I have found lots of points of clarity that explain clearly stitches and techniques that knitting patterns don't always. It is easy to understand with good illustrations and well cross referenced. and absolute boon to beginners and advanced alike.

This will be an invaluable resource for knitters as they read patterns and translate the abbreviations contained therein. It's well organized and terms are explained in easy to understand language.

It's hard to see what the formatting will look like in the copy of the document I received, but I'm confident that it will be user friendly.

I've had my hands on quite a few knitting dictionaries and reference books over the years. Some are definitely better than others and it can be difficult to stand out on a crowded shelf in a bookstore or online. I've had great results from using Interweave books in the past, so I expected something great here. The layout of this book is very usable. Information is easy to locate, entries are clearly explained. There are a number of illustrations as well for clarity - sometimes you just need a visual! There are nice illustrations of the various collar shapes as well as sweater body shapes. In addition, we get helpful tips throughout. For example, near the "circ, cir, circular needle" entry, we're offered tips on choosing the length of circular needles for our project.

One thing that I think did fall a bit short was in the yarn recommendation table. Atherley suggests animal fibers (wool, silk, other animal fibers) for the majority of the project types she lists. As someone who uses plant fibers almost exclusively these days, I can tell you that cotton and linen both can work quite well for lace and cables! Swatch and see if you like the results before skipping the plant fibers!

Even those of us who have been knitting for years (or decades!) need a good reference for those techniques and terminology we don't often see. I'd happily add this book to my own small shelf of knitting reference books!

I was very excited to review this book as I love knitting, though am not the most knowledgeable when it comes to terms and definitions. This book is packed full of everything you need to know about the terminology used in all patterns. If you are a beginner this is a must. If you are an expert knitter I’m sure there will still be things that you can learn. There’s nothing very fancy about the book, just the information you need laid out in a straightforward and easy to read format.

The book can be used for any level of knitting expertise. The book contains useful definitions and techniques in order to improve or to become a master of knitting. Kate illustrated some complex definitions with clear and useful illustrations and examples.

Book starts out with a table of contents: intro, getting started, a-z, references, acknowledgements and about the author and other works.
Intro talks about this book as a guide to help you understand the language and patterns phrases.
What I like about the getting started are the important parts of knitting: the patterns, size, gauge, tools, knitting fibers-love the yarn band where it shows all the info about the yarn that is highlighted by arrows.
Chart about the item you want to make and what important yarn features are best to use.
The dictionary itself is set up a chapter for each letter of the alphabet and all the phrases used in knitting=some have explanations of how to do the stitches.
Also various diagrams showing stitches on the needle and pointing out other information.
Charts throughout on general symbols used in charted patterns: chart and symbols on yarn bands about fibers and if they can be machine or hand washed-very helpful when deciding what type of fiber to use;
Different neck shapings provide you with instructions on how to do the inc/dec; Charts on needle size in US, UK and metric.
What a KEEPER! So much useful information.

This book is not a replacement for the huge knitting bibles, but it is an excellent quick reference. Information is presented very concisely. The definitions include all of the abbreviations commonly found in knitting instructions as well as definitions of other knitting terms and techniques. It also has instructions for some of the techniques, such as joining in the round, making various decreases and increases and swatching. There are clear, hand drawn illustrations throughout the book. Some information is presented in chart form, for example yarn attributes, fiber care instructions and blocking methods. There are a few handy knitting tips sprinkled in too.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. However, my PDF copy will be deleted in a few days, so I am going to have to buy a copy to keep.

This Knitter’s Dictionary has the new knitter covered! I wish I would have had it when I first picked up my needles. Like a regular dictionary, it goes in alphabetical order, giving explanations for just about every knitting term you can imagine. The expalanations are clear and concise, so you can easily find the answer to your question and get on with your pattern. There are good diagrams to supplement the entires, and charts to illustrate needle sizes, yarn weights and more. I would recommend this book to a newer knitter.

This is a very nice resource especially for the beginner and average knitter. It certainly helps to clarify any questions that one might have in relation to wool, techniques and abbreviations. This book has been extensively and thoroughly researched

Even as a well seasoned knitter, this helpful dictionary of terms is great when trying to read a pattern. There are plenty of times when a "simple Google search" is anything but simple, and this book helps during those times. There are illustrations for some definitions, too, to help ease any confusion that may still be left.

Super handy resource for patrons and a variety of skill levels. This was formatted well in an easy to use structure and for reference purposes.

I've been knitting since I was 12, so I am always interested in seeing new knitting books but don't often find they offer anything new. Still, it's always great to stumble upon a book that well explains the craft -- and this is definitely a book worth picking up for beginners and experts alike. There is a LOT of information packed into this book. Beginners will enjoy the in-depth but straightforward approach to all things knitting, while experts will appreciate the glossary like nature of this book that allows for a simple refresher when needed and a thorough definition of a few obscure techniques. I especially loved the illustrations and the simple design.
