Wow, Wow, Wow! I really don’t know how to describe what I have just read except to say Wow. Once again M R Carey has asked us to suspend our cautious belief that we know and understand how the world works and once again has pulled off a brilliant piece of work. The storyline is superb and I just had to keep pinching myself to acknowledge that this was a fictitious story, albeit credible in so many ways. Great writing and beautifully plotted. I didn’t think The Girl with All the Gifts could be bettered - but I was wrong. I think this book is even better.

This is a twisty-turny mad thriller of a book that I think fans of Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Frank Herbert would enjoy.
It focuses on two central characters, Liz -a mother of two, who is fighting and trying to control a vicious side of her that has been apparently awakened by domestic abuse, and Fran - who had a life-changing traumatic event happen in her youth when she was kidnapped.
When Liz & Fran's paths cross at a psychiatrists office, all sorts of strange things start to happen.
I don't want to give too much away, but if you've read any M.R. Carey books before you know the moral ambiguity that is often involved and he often focuses on the grey areas between good and bad. This is what makes them so interesting. He asks questions as to what makes people good, bad or even monsters, rather than just labelling them.
It is in the horror genre and while I don't think it's "true" horror, (it's not The Shining or Rosemary's Baby) it's disturbing and slightly unnerving. If you were a thriller fan thinking about taking a dive into horror, this would be a good gateway book.
All in all, good enjoyable read that I think will be as popular as "The Girl with all the Gifts".

If you've read any of M.R. Carey's previous books then I think you know what to expect - if you haven't read any - then prepare to have your mind blown!
This is another difficult book to review without giving away any spoilers so I need to be careful of what I say here. Liz Kendall is a devoted mother of 2 with a violent ex-husband who treated her like a human punchbag throughout their marriage. One night when returning their children he attacks her but she fights back - harder with an inner strength she didn't know she had - except this inner strength also has a name and wants revenge.
The other main character in this story is Fran (Francine) a young teenage girl who was involved in a horrific abduction 10 years ago and still bears the scars mentally. When Fran's path crosses with Liz's eldest son their lives become entwined and connected in ways no-one could see coming.
A very clever and twisty tale which kept me glued to each page - devouring every chapter, rooting for Liz and Fran and loving the entire book.
