This latest book from the Author featuring William Monk is one of her best ……..fast paced , enthralling , complex … just a few words to described a great story .

Harry Exeter's wife Kate has been kidnapped and a large ransom demanded .
The River Police are tasked by Sir Oliver Rathbone with escorting Exeter to the ransom site , which is in a dangerous slum slowly sinking into the mud on Jacob's Island , in order to ensure his safety and the secure return of Kate .
All goes wrong , they are ambushed ……………..the money lost , his men injured and Kate found brutally murdered .
Someone must have betrayed them …………..only Monk , Exeter and his men knew of the exact path they would take to the ransom site ………………. But who ? and why ?
Monk must try to solve Kate's murder …………. but who amongst his men can he trust ?----- when to just survive on the river they must all have confidence in each other . Moral is at an all time low , each looking to the other , suspicion abounds .
As he looks into the backgrounds of his men he realises that his second in command , Hooper - a man who he would have always thought had his back - has a secret ………….does it impact on the case , can he still trust him ?
The investigation soon centres on the money...…..the Bank manager and employees are now suspect …….. that is until a bank clerk is murdered on her way to meet Monk with vital new evidence .
Having nearly losing his life trying to rescue the clerk from the river he allows the local police to take over her murder investigation , thus allowing himself more time to look into who the betrayer is .

All is not as it seems and Monk's past , the recent kidnapping of his wife Hester and the secrets of others all appear to have been used to manipulate events that will allow a vicious murderer to escape justice .

This book is brilliant in the way it looks at relationships , secrets and how people can use others to hide their own misdeeds .

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Hi Karen,

My Next review is:-

“Dark Tide Rising:William Monk Mystery Book 24”, written by Anne Perry and published in paperback by Headline on (20 Sept. 2018). 352 pages. ISBN-13: 978-1472234209

Despite having already written 23 previous books in this current series and a whole lot more besides there is an singular originality in Anne Perry’s writing that never fails to intrigue me and makes her books truly exceptional and I’m always totally gripped until the final page. Her plotting and in depth research makes her books really stand out as historical mysteries.

In Dark Tide Rising, Commander William Monk of The River Police is enlisted to accompany a man who has to pay a ransom to the kidnappers of his wife Kate Exeter. The rendezvous point that the kidnappers have selected is the dark slums of Jacobs Island in Bermondsey, London. Unfortunately, Monk and his most trusted men are betrayed and attacked and a lot of violence happens and a killing occurs which could not be foreseen.

What went wrong? How could Monk have avoided the situation. The rest of this incredibly interesting and atmospheric book delves into the intriguing circumstances that occurred and which culminate in a truly exciting trial in The Central Criminal Court at The Old Bailey.

I have read a number of Anne Perry’s books and I look forward to reading many more. She is very adept in providing incredibly intriguing and imaginative plots that twist and turn until the final page. The characters that she peoples her books with are all very richly drawn and spring off the page. The general descriptions and meticulously historically accurate level of detail made this one of the most atmospheric stories that I have read in years. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Best wishes,

Terry

Book 24 in the William Monk Mysteries. Monk is the Commander of the Thames River Police. He is called out to help pay a ransom for Harry Exeter’s wife on Jacobs Island a warren of waterways and slums.
You can feel the tension of the police wanting to avoid this notorious area. You are soon drawn into the past following in Monk’s footsteps as kidnapping becomes murder. The most awful thought of all is one of Monk’s river police was involved. You really feel the hopelessness of Monk’s situation with all the twists and turns. It’s a story for history buffs and fans of enthralling mysteries alike. This book is waiting to become your next must read. I would recommend you go and discover the previous William Monk Series.
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
