I wanted to love this, I really did, but I really had to force myself to even finish it because I didn't care for any of the characters, I felt like the story was way too repetitive and there wasn't really anything to root for. It took me weeks to finish and I couldn't really tell you everything that happened. I won't be continuing on with the series.

DNF. I tried 4 separate times to read this but each time I never get further than two chapters before I'm bored and looking for something else to read.

I would like to thank Relay Publishing and CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform and Netgalley for this partnership.

I loved the cover of this book, it shows three people walking on the ice and heading to a city.

We find Nathan, his pregnant wife Cindy and their asthmatic son going to a better place where the cold won't kill them. When a friend of Nathan's tells them that Detroit is a paradise there, they do not hesitate to go there despite the thugs they may find on their way.

I loved this first book, a moving, captivating story filled with suspense and twists and turns and engaging characters.

The author shows us here what could very well happen in the coming years with global warming. Can't wait for this series to be released in complete boxset.

I thought the premise for Freezing Point sounded really engaging: a dystopian novel set when the world starts freezing over and humanity must question how far they are prepared to go to survive and keep their loved ones safe. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver for me, and there were a couple of reasons for this.

The first was the characters. The entire thing follows Nate: a husband, father and mechanic. But Nate was a weak character. By which I mean he gives himself a pep talk more than once because he knows he is being weak and irrational, vows never to be that man again, and skip a few chapters and it all repeats.

Nate initially refuses to leave his home because of the ties to his father’s business – despite his sick son and pregnant wife (the love of his life as we are often reminded) being in danger staying there. He is initially reluctant to engage in violence – which is fine. But although that changes, it doesn’t feel like he’s had the emotional development to go with it, he just does it and then doesn’t dwell on the consequences. I spent most of the book wanting Nate to pull himself together.

There are several other characters that feel they have missed potential. Most notably are Syd, Donie and Dave. These could be really cool and complex characters, but Nate has such a negative and mistrusting attitude that you can’t connect to them. He’s constantly making ‘truces’ with Syd, and their relationship never moves forward. His wife, Cyndi, is the only person he truly sees in a positive light.

His ‘best friend’, Freeson, deals with a lot in this book. But perhaps most of all, he puts up with Nate, who doesn’t respect him, doesn’t value him and is quick to dismiss him unless their views are the same. Nate’s attitudes towards others makes him a hard character to like.

The structure of the book also didn’t make a lot of sense. For example: days of travelling leads to meeting Lucy and burning her limo. Days after that, they reach a diner. Days after that, they find the cabin in the wood, all while driving. Yet in one day, Nate (with a head wound and no food) walks back to the diner, somehow passing the limo on the way. No wonder they couldn’t get to Detroit: they appeared to be going in circles?

I couldn’t engage with this one: I couldn’t suspend disbelief to feel any of the tension. Apart from the very final part of the book, the characters have it too easy – they just conveniently have enough food, warmth, space for all of the strays they pick up. There was no sense of urgency, even when the action picks up, and I got bored with all the travelling and nothing else happening.

Unfortunately for me, this book didn’t work. I need to feel a connection with the characters and that didn’t happen. Maybe it will work for others…

WOW! Grace Hamilton has built a very believable world as the background of this series. The characters are real and could be your neighbors, if you had the bad fortune to live on the East Coast of the United States. I lived in Alaska for 30 years and cold affects everything you do, even when it's summer, you have to prepare for winter's coming. Being prepared is not an option. As this family decides to move to a more temperate climate, they must decide how to keep their family safe and whole. They add to their family as they move closer to their destination, but will it be everything that was promised. You'll only know if you READ THE BOOK!

This is set in a dystopian world with the whole world freezing. first up I just want to say that the main character has no common sense at all, when its cold you head south never head sideways or north. when he sees no one is moving the same direction as him he should have realised. This is so far fetched and he basically brought disaster to himself when he didnt choose to head south. ridiculous

This took me a while to get through. Main reason being..no letting the reader know what caused the climate change or the shift on the axis.
The story is a what if read. What if we stay, leave. How do we handle medical issues. Characters were ok, some one dimensional.
Would I read a sequel? Perhaps. Not right away though.
If apocalyptic books are your thing, then grab it and enjoy.

I so wanted to love this book, everything about is screams my name, from the ice-Age theme to the dystopian styling. However I found it hard to read, the pacing was a little off and the characters didn't seem to have much of a progression or arc.
Great writing style though.

Freezing Point is a moving story of survival, family, and friendship.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the earth's axis has tilted and most parts of the world are submerged in snow. Business and shops are closed, and people are running out of food. Scavengers are on the hunt and people are seeking shelter and safety elsewhere. Nathan, a mechanic whose business has been affected by the tectonic shifts has to find a safe place from the unforgiving cold if he and his family have to survive.

His friend invites him to Detroit, with promises that it would be much better than New York, where Nathan lives. We follow him on his journey with his wife, his son, and his friend, Freeson. With enough food to survive and supplies to stay warm, he navigates the cold and harsh terrain, avoiding scavengers on the way. Enroute, he meets some interesting and quirky characters who are stranded and they all join him.
After a harrowing journey in subzero conditions, he arrives in Detroit, but Detroit is not what he thought it would be.

Freezing Point is an engaging dystopian book that gripped me from start to finish. The descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt as though I were living the scenes with the characters.
This book would make an excellent miniseries, and with realistic and believable characters and a cliffhanger, this would keep you entertained for hours. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Climate change and and a never ending winter! such amazing concept! The family's struggle for survival and trying to find a safe place was heart touching.I really loved both Nathan and Cyndi. The story really makes you wonder what would you do if something like that happens in the near future.Ending left me with a curiosity to know what's going to happen next. Looking forward to the next book.

I gave it 2.5 stars

I REALLY wanted to love FREEZING POINT and I started off enjoying it, but there were a few things that threw the story off or me.

What I liked:
- I really enjoyed the concept of the book. The world going through an ice age type weather event could happen someday and it was easy to understand.
- There was a lot of action. There was a fight/danger at every turn.

What I didn't like:
- Nathan was way too trusting and naive. It seemed like every turn brought bad decisions on his part that put his family in more danger.
- I really despised the fact that practically every male the group came in contact with wanted to use the wife as a broodmare. This theme wasn't the only repetitive thing that happened in FREEZING POINT.
- A majority of the characters annoyed me in one way or another.

I most likely won't read more, but I didn't totally hate reading FREEZING POINT.

Review of FREEZING POINT by Grace Hamilton
(After the Shift Book 1)

I've read post-apocalyptic books about nuclear winter, EMP's, pandemics, dystopias, global warming. I think this is the first time I've read one with this particular premise:
an inexplicable shift of the North Pole, plus volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, has caused seemingly unending winter througout the Eastern U.S., Africa, and the UK.
Seems like a nice change of pace from melting Antarctica and terrible hurricanes and unbearably hot summers, doesn't it?
I suppose not if you're living it inescapably, as our characters do, residing in Upstate New York State and trying to figure out how to move west, to Detroit, where it might be warmer, possibly, and supposedly, the municipality has planned for survival and improvement.

This is also the first novel I've read by Grace Hamilton, who is a prolific author of the Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Genres. She writes well, and includes a lot of descriptive settings presented in very imaginative ways. Her characters are also rather deeply delineated, so it doesn't take long for a reader to decide with whom our empathy lies and whom to cheer on. I'm off to read the second in the series now, KILLING FROST.
Winter rules!
(in this series, literally!)

A post apocalyptic world where snow is everywhere! This is the setting in which the reader is put with Freeson and his family. The earths axis has titled significantly and caused a new ice age. Through wild gangs, trying to stay warm, and having enough food to survive, Freezing Point will keep you on edge.

Freezing Point by Grace Hamilton. Good start to what appears to be an interesting post apocalyptic series. Ended with a cliffhanger that hopefully will be resolved in the next book. Until then....try to keep warm.

Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

This is an ARC from Netgalley.
It is a story of survival after a massive climate change. The Tolley family and friends are heading to Detroit, the perfect place to escape, but the journey is not safe and Detroit it is not what they thought it would be.

Interesting end of the world tale with some good characters. A never ending winter sounds horrific and this was well written in portraying that. Nathan is a good guy and does come into his own as the story goes along but Cyndi is awesome out of the box. Freeson and Nathan’s friendship and joking added a bit of humor. Tony and his health conditions upped the drama. They set out to their new destination and gather an interesting gang along the way. The descriptions of the setting and and struggle felt so real. These type of stories always fascinate me and this one didn’t disappoint! I will go continue with the series

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and Relay Publishing for a copy in exchange for a review.

This was one of those books I sat discussing with my husband as I was reading...Could this work? What would we do in this situation? That situation?

Freezing Point is a compelling that twists here and there, a mishmash of characters that don't really belong together but fit just right.

I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series...because the ending is a little bit of a cliffhanger - their ride is definitely not over ;)
