Difficult to review this book without giving spoilers. Suffice to say Eli is still suffering from morning sickness in later pregnancy and worrying about her ability to bond with her child. She has a very close relationship, perhaps too close, with her mother and when she starts to feel threatened by someone trying to warn her of Martin's infidelity she does not cope well. There is obviously an outside threat and things escalate. I found Eli quite irritating with her flight from her husband and friend and driving 90 minutes one way and then 90 minutes another was a little repetitive. It was nevertheless quite a page-turner.

I really enjoyed Claire Allan's last book and was excited to see this come up on Netgalley and oh what a book.

This was a book that really knocked me for six, it kept me guessing throughout and I loved how I didn't see what was going to happen next. It just kept wowing me with where the story was going and what was happening.

I liked the characters and reading about how they are incorporated as the story progressed. This was a book where I didn't see things coming and then the plot direction would just hit me. I found that as it went on I was keener to keep reading as I wanted to see what was happening next and found that I just couldn't put it down.

I loved this book, it had me hooked and I just had to keep reading - I look forward to seeing what Claire Allan releasing next as I really enjoyed this book.

I was introduced to Claire Allan last year with her debut thriller book, Her Name Was Rose. Even though I decided to no longer ask for Netgalley books until I was finally caught up on my backlog, when I saw the email for her most recent thriller, Apple of my Eye, I knew I needed to read it. I requested it, got it, then…February and March happened, so I wasn’t able to get in the correct mindset to dive right in. So while the book has been out for a couple of months now, I am still happy to give you my thoughts on it.

What I liked so much about Her Name Was Rose was Allan’s ability to take a good thriller storyline but not write it like a generic thriller. Allan’s other pieces of work tend to be more chick lit-like, a genre I don’t jive with. I think her work in that genre, though, has given her the ability to take a different spin on the thriller genre. I would not say her books are chick lit-meets-thriller, but there’s just a slightly different…feel to her version of a thriller novel.

Apple of My Eye sucked me in almost immediately. I was intrigued by these characters, wanted to know what was happening, wanted to know more about them. Having finished the book, however, I can say that I felt nothing for these characters. This book, for me, was purely plot-driven: I loved the storyline and was excited to see what developed. The characters never felt completely fleshed out, though I 100% say that was me not connecting to them for some reason or another, because I can think even know of many examples for Allan attempting to give these characters a breath of life.

Like Her Name Was Rose, this book is told from multiple perspectives. Allan does a great job with this and is able to switch perspectives in a way that isn’t jarring but that gives you a cliffhanger, gotta keep reading to see what’s going on feeling. The plot goes at a good pace, doesn’t feel rushed in any parts. The story progression makes sense, isn’t completely out of the left field. I wasn’t trying to figure it out but around the 50% mark, it really popped out at me what was happening and I had a good guess at the ending. Finishing the book and realizing I was mostly right did not take one bit of my enjoyment away. I don’t feel like guessing the ending meant the book was predictable in this instance. There were only so many possible ways it could have gone and the ending been so completely out of nowhere, it would have left me as a reader more frustrated and honestly let down.

I give it three stars. It’s not great. I definitely preferred Her Name Was Rose to this one, though I don’t really want to compare them. I think this one is a good read and definitely worth the time put into it. Claire Allan has become a Must Buy author for me and I look forward to her next book, Forget Me Not, coming out next month.

“Apple Of My Eye” is a compulsive and digressive thriller that has been beautifully put together, with motherhood at its core.

This is my second time of reading a book by this author and I was not disappointed! I have previously read the outstanding ‘Her Name was Rose’ which was a five-star read for me, so there was a lot for Claire Allan to live up to.

“Apple of My Eye” brings to life an incredible family account of mistrust, jealousy and suspicion. It is a book about motherhood and all that it means to all of womankind. In this novel, the reader is categorically and unequivocally made aware of how it affects the lives and relationships of different women. It is also a divulgence of desperation, loneliness and all the different layers of love.

As always, I am having a run of strong, inspiring thrillers and this is on the list, along with my other favourites. The plot for this book is awesome and incredibly thrilling. I’m always looking for something in a book in this genre that makes it more notable than the rest. This could be amazingly drawn characters, a super plot, great originality or something entirely different that I couldn’t even imagine.

This book has many of the components that make a really good story: from the mood and undercurrents to the very clever writing and the experience of family secrets, jealousy and incredibly tense relationships.

For myself, the one thing that made this a memorable read was Claire Allan’s ability to send me off course in nearly every chapter. Narrated from three different perspectives - that of Eli, her mother Angela and the mysterious Louise - I found that it was the chapters told from Louise’s angle that added a real sense of apprehension to the plot. Claire Allan managed to create so much suspicion and mistrust through her story-telling and there was an overpowering sense of menace that emanated from the pages of this addictive read which is chock full of mystery. I found that I had no idea who or what I could trust. The emotional, distressed and pregnant wife or the mother who wanted to protect her daughter from an adulterous husband, or the revealing anonymous notes? 

Another of my favourite aspects of this novel was the fluidity of the writing. The details and twists of the plot were brilliantly executed and every chapter left me with a compelling need to read on.

”Apple Of My Eye” is a supreme accomplishment, mixing women’s fiction with a chilling, sharp slice of thriller, culminating in an emotive and fulfilling ending. I absolutely adored every chapter of this pacey novel and I would certainly recommend it.

I’ve just finished “Apple Of My Eye” by Claire Allan and I absolutely LOVED it! It’s a psychological/domestic thriller, which really isn’t my normal genre but I found “Apple Of My Eye” addictive. It's also a standalone, which I don't normally enjoy either but this was tense and kept me hooked.

“Apple Of My Eye” is set in Ireland and surrounds a small cast of characters. Eli, our main character is pregnant and lives with her husband, Martin. Eli’s mother, Angela is the second most prominent character in the book, I’d say, as she looks after Eli throughout her pregnancy woes and struggles. Eli has a few friends as well but the main plot story centres around Eli having to deal with a stalker like character wanting to steal her baby...who is this person? You’ll have to read to find out...

I’d say that “Apple Of My Eye” should be read by +17 year olds because of the psychological aspects of the book.

In “Apple Of My Eye,” we see from 3 POV’s, throughout. Eli, who has the most chapters, Louise and Eli’s mother, Angela. The other characters are secondary characters, Martin, Eli’s husband for example. Like I said, there aren’t many of them, though. It’s still a very character driven story, as I think most psychological thrillers are. We want to see the internal monologues of the characters. We do see that for Eli, Louise and Angela...

“I deserved to be a mother. This woman, tired and worn out and miserable, didn’t. Not as much as I did, anyway.

This is from the prologue of “Apple Of My Eye.” This is from Louise’s perspective. Louise is the antagonist of the story. She’s trying to steal Eli’s baby. We don’t know who Louise is until near the end of the novel. I was able to work out who Louise was in regards to Eli at the end, although I was questioning who she was throughout the story. I think you’re meant to be able to work it out, though as you read the book. It’s a little like a game of Cluedo but instead of a murderer, you’re trying to work out who the potential baby stealer is.

Louise has lost many children before. All she wants is to be a mother. She’ll literally go to any length. We see this as the novel progresses towards its conclusion. I found myself reading this e-arc much quicker than I would a regular one. I think that was because the author was able to capture the right tone needed for a psychological thriller, especially towards the end.

“I’m not trying to be harsh, darling. But maybe you need to start accepting that he’s not the man you thought he was.”

This is Angela, trying to be nice and calm to a stressed Eli, when she discovers her husband might be cheating on her. Is he cheating? You’ll need to read to find out. Eli isn’t sure she wants to be a mum at the beginning of the story. She doesn’t feel connected to her baby.

“I stroke my stomach, whispering, ‘I love you,’ hoping if I say it enough I’ll start to really, really feel it.”

I think most first time mums in real life have doubts about whether they’ll be good enough for their child but Eli seems to be worse than most, even though she’s fictional. What with all the issues she goes through in “Apple Of My Eye,” though, it’s no wonder she feels that way. By the end of the story, can she connect? Eli finds out the sex of her baby behind the baby’s father, Martin’s back, because she wants to so badly connect and she feels that this will help. Does it or does it just create a bad situation between her and Martin? You’ll have to read to find out.

There are lots of questions put to us, the reader as we’re reading. I guess this is the formula of a good psychological thriller, though. You’re always supposed to be questioning the morals of every character and whether or not what they’re doing is right. Even Eli, our heroine or damsel in distress is to be questioned a couple of times throughout the book. She’s a nurse and accidentally drugs a patient to much causing them to die. Are her morals always right? Does she deserve to be a mother? These are two of the questions thrown up at us a few times throughout “Apple Of My Eye,” too.

I don’t want to spoil just who Louise is or the lengths that she goes to to steal Eli’s baby or if she actually manages to worm her way in and steal those that Eli holds most dear in “Apple Of My Eye,” as that would completely take away the excitement but the reveals are exciting and shocking, to say the least.

What did I like about “Apple Of My Eye?”

* I liked how we were always kept guessing as to the plot. Nothing was clear apart from a character, Louise wanting Eli’s baby, which we know from the blurb is the main plot point of the story.

* I liked how the character’s intentions were mysterious. Every character apart from maybe Eli we were questioning throughout.

* I liked how the setting was in Ireland and not in the US or UK, where most contemporary/thriller stories I’ve read are set.

I liked how creepy “Apple Of My Eye” got. It wasn’t scary as in horror but it was unsettling. This made it exciting, though, as I summarised above.

* I liked how quickly I was able to get through “Apple Of My Eye.” It became a book that I NEEDED to read instead of one I just wanted to read, which is what I want in a thriller of any kind.

* I liked how I was able to enjoy a standalone to its fullest, which I don't normally experience.

What didn’t I like about “Apple Of My Eye?”

I didn’t like how every perspective was from a woman. Yes, the writer is female but I thought it would have been good to have some male insight. But I do understand why it was only female, at the same time.

I finished “Apple Of My Eye” in a few days and I normally read around 50 pages a day, so for a 300 page book, it should have really taken me six or so days to read it. It felt like it didn’t take long at all! It went so quickly. I loved how the author kept my eyes glued to the page. I highly recommend this for fans of domestic/psychological thrillers. I’m therefore giving “Apple Of My Eye” 5 Stars because it was so gripping, exciting and well written

Okay, I liked this one.

It’s funny because I knew ‘who’ was behind everything very early in the book. I just didn’t care! I was so thoroughly entertained and I loved the characters. I just kept hoping that everything would work out okay.

It’s not too twisty – of course maybe that’s because I didn’t need the reveal – yet it’s still suspenseful and a very good read!

Being pregnant should be an enjoyable experience, a time to prepare for motherhood, unfortunately that’s not the case for Eliana, she spends her pregnancy crippled by self doubt. Adding to her anxiety is Eli’s distant relationship with her husband Martin. Matters aren’t helped when she receives a cryptic note suggesting that her husband is cheating on her. As jealousy, paranoia and tension build, an emotionally fragile Eli’s becomes suspicious of everyone around her. When her overbearing mother comes to stay, she convinces Eli to go back to Belfast with her, and it’s at this point the story takes a very disturbing turn.

Narrated from the POV of Eli, her mother Angela and the mysterious Louise, it’s the chapters told from Louise POV that add a sense of dread to the plot. Claire Allan creates suspicion and mistrust through her storytelling, you find yourself wary of those closest to Eli, looking for clues to the “who” is causing so much trouble for Eli. Halfway through reading this book I had a theory to the culprit and their motives and unfortunately I was correct, so the element of surprise I was expecting never materialised, but never the less I felt a frisson of excitement as the author finally revealed all. Apple Of My Eye is a psychological thriller with a dark heart, it’s a book that begs to be read in one hugely satisfying sitting. Highly recommended

Once again Claire allan has writtena struly astounding story that grips the reader from the first page, twisting and turning their emotions along with the storyline. If you think you know what will happen guess again, and again, then again for good measure!

I read, reviewed and loved Claire’s debut psychological thriller called ‘Her Name Was Rose’ when it was released on 28th June 2018. Since then I have been (im)patiently waiting for her next psychological thriller. Her second book ‘Apple Of My Eye’ was released on 24th January 2019. I thought her first book was good but in my opinion ‘Apple Of My Eye’ is even better. I absolutely flipping well loved it, but more about that in a bit.
When I first ‘met’ Eliana Hughes, I really felt for her. She is a nurse, who works in a local hospice providing palliative care. Eliana is also heavily pregnant with a baby and Eliana is confused about how she feels. Eliana is unsurprisingly feeling under pressure. She doesn’t think of her job as being particularly stressful. Eliana is not having an easy pregnancy as she feels sick most of the time and she can’t keep much down. This isn’t helped by the fact that her husband works away and he has been absent for a fair bit of the pregnancy. Eliana is feeling emotional enough as it is but her emotions run riot when she finds a note that indicates that her husband isn’t ‘working away’ but he is up to no good elsewhere if you get my drift. In Eliana’s mind this adds up because he has become increasingly distant of late. Eliana becomes even more paranoid and suspicious and it is this increased paranoia that leads her to make a mistake that could have far reaching consequences all round. At the same time, Eliana is being watched by somebody who is so desperate for a child that she will do practically anything to get the child that she so desires. What is the truth? Is Eliana is danger? Is Martin, Eliana’s husband, playing away? What happened to the child? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out because I am not going to tell you.
Oh my word, ‘Apple Of My Eye’ was one seriously deliciously creepy read that had me gripped from start to finish. I picked up the book only intending to read a couple of chapters but I was still sat there half a dozen chapters later. I became entranced by the story and I found it simply impossible to put the book down. The book wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it came everywhere with me. If I did have to put the book down then I would count down the time until I could pick it up again. To say ‘Apple Of My Eye’ is addictive reading is a vast understatement. I felt as though I was that addicted to the book that I was always in need of my next fix. The more of the book that I read, the further I got into the story and the more I wanted to read. The pages turned with increasing speed and it didn’t take me long at all to get through the story. Usually I have the attention span of a gnat and I am easily distracted but that certainly wasn’t the case with ‘Apple Of My Eye’. I was so focussed on the story that the world could have ended and I wouldn’t have known anything about it.
‘Apple Of My Eye’ is brilliantly written. The author entices the reader in from the first word onwards and her writing is so good that you just have to keep reading. What I also love about ‘Apple Of My Eye’ is that the author has created such realistic characters that they seem to come to life and jump off the page as it were. Some pretty tough subjects are discussed in the book but the author writes about them realistically, sympathetically and with great sensitivity and compassion.
Reading this book was like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns that you would find in a bag of fusilli pasta. I thought that I had fathomed out who was who etc only to realise that I was wrong and I was sent down another path entirely.
In short, ‘Apple Of My Eye’ is one fantastic book and I would urge you to read this book and the author’s previous book ‘Her Name Was Rose’. I thought that ‘Her Name Was Rose’ was good but ‘Apple Of My Eye’ blows it out of the water. I can’t wait to read what Claire Allan comes up with next. Fortunately I don’t have too long to wait because the next book called ‘Forget Me Not’ is due for release on 30th May 2019. I cannot wait. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

Grab a chair and prepare for a marathon reading session!!! Excellent psychological thriller that will keep you reading until the small hours!

At times I felt the book was a little slow, particularly near the beginning and at times I did skim read however overall I enjoyed the book.
Whilst I did have the villain figured out fairly early on I did still like it and found the conclusion satisfying.

Well written, with many twists and turns. A good read, hard to put down and a very good, satisfactory ending, often hard to get. The characters were so realistic and an amazing plot.

Last year, Claire Allan’s debut thriller Her Name Was Rose was one of my favourite books of 2018, so my expectations for her second chiller, Apple of My Eye, were exceedingly high, but after devouring the book in two days, I can safely say that she has not only outdone herself yet again, but also cemented her status as one of the most talented and ingenious writers of domestic noir writing today.

Eliana Hughes leads a life most women would give their right arm for. With a gorgeous husband, a beautiful house and a baby on the way, Eli’s life is as close to perfect as it is possible to get. Although her job as a hospice nurse can get quite stressful, her husband Martin is spending more and more time working out of town and her morning sickness seems to be a 24 hour thing, Eli doesn’t think she has anything to worry about – until an anonymous note is delivered to her workplace that shockingly informs her that Martin is playing away. Eli has never had any cause to doubt her husband’s fidelity and initially dismisses the poison pen note as someone’s idea of a sick joke. Yet, she begins to be assailed by doubts about Martin; doubts which show no sign of abating – especially as Martin has just announced that he needs to go to London again to oversee the project that has been taking up most of his time…

Is Martin as faithful and loyal as she had always thought him to be? Her pregnancy has been anything but easy on the pair of them, but surely Martin would never cheat on her? As her paranoia increases with each passing day, Eli wonders whether it is just her imagination or whether Martin is becoming more secretive and distant. Does he have another life in London? Is it just work that is constantly necessitating his trips to the city? Or is there something far more sinister afoot?

However, little does Eli realise that Martin’s possible infidelity is not the only thing she has to worry about because a stranger is watching her every move and they are single-minded in their objective to become a mother and stay a mother. This stranger will not rest until they get their hands on a baby – and they’ve found the perfect baby to suit their purposes: Eli’s unborn child…

A mind-blowingly brilliant thriller that I simply couldn’t bear to put down, Apple of My Eye is packed with shocking twists that will make your jaw drop, nail-biting tension that will make your heart pound and suspense so chilling you will be hiding behind the sofa. A brilliantly written and terrifically plotted thriller that will hold you in thrall and keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, Apple of My Eye is a superb tale of secrets and deceptions that will leave you breathless.

Claire Allan writes compulsively readable thrillers that are absolutely impossible to forget and with Apple of My Eye she has once again penned a chilling and shocking tale aficionados of the genre will not want to miss.

I loved the way this story unfolded and the way it was told from three different angles. I really enjoyed it and I have read other books by this author. Highly recommended.

Despite buying a copy of her previous psychological thriller Her Name was Rose which I've not had a chance to read yet, Apple of My Eye is my first experience of Claire Allan as a thriller writer having previously read and enjoyed all her previous romantic comedy and contemporary books. And having recently finished reading this book I can honestly stay that for me it's her best to date, it was a menacing, tension filled read that had me rapidly turning the pages waiting for, but at the same time not wanting, everything to play out as I was reading.

The story is narrated from the viewpoints of three main characters; Eliana (Eli) who is seven months pregnant with her first child, Louise - a young woman who is struggling to cope with the loss of her baby, and Angela - Eli's mum. This multi narrator format worked really well to give us an overall picture as we get to see how their different experiences of pregnancy and motherhood affects/has affected, them and everyone close to them.

Expecting your first much-loved child should be an enjoyable experience for a woman, and in the latter stages a time for nesting to prepare for the baby's arrival, but sadly this is not the case for Eli who has been sick as a dog throughout her pregnancy. So when strange things start happening casting doubts on her husband Martin's fidelity, it's no wonder that the stress and anxiety are making her even sicker. I really felt for Eli and could totally understand her paranoia as to who she could and could not trust and my heart really went out to her when her mental and physical state started to cause problems for her at work with dire consequences, it's a situation that no-one would ever want to be in and was Eli's living nightmare.

But it was the accounts from the mysterious Louise's perspective that really ramped up the tension and created a real sense of paranoia as we discover what has driven her to this point in her life, she was clearly a desperate woman in pain but at the same time her actions were totally despicable. And then there is Angela who offers her daughter support albeit in an overbearing and somewhat suffocating manner. She was not a character that I ever really warmed to and the more I read, the more I began to understand why I was feeling the way I did about her.

As the story unfolded I flew through the final third of this book as I wanted to see if my suspicions were correct, and even though I had guessed correctly, the way it all played out in the final chapters was truly shocking. Claire Allan has definitely found her writing niche and fortunately we don't have too long to wait for another book from her in this genre as Forget Me Not is published at the end of May.

this story was told from three different points of views so let me introduce you to each character.
First off we have Eliana (Eli) who is seven months pregnant with her first child and is a nurse. She is battling morning sickness throughout her entire pregnancy and feeling a real connection to her baby.
Louise is a young women who has miscarried multiple babies including a son who she almost carried to full term but had to deliver early since he didn't make it. She is divorced and really would like a child of her own.
The third perspective is Angela who is Eli's mother. She is a little overprotective and is unmarried. She never married and raised Eli on her own always hoping Eli would be there with her.

Eli is just going through the motions of life with her husband Martin who is an architect and out of town often working on a big project. She never suspects him of foul play although their marriage has seemed strained recently. She does begin to suspect him however when she begins getting notes accusing him of cheating. The notes seem to know where he is and things someone close would only know. Eli asks her mother to stay over when Martin has to leave out of town again since she is feeling unsettled and stressed over the notes.

Louise wants a child of her own and she believes that child to be the one Eli is carrying and begins to spy on her and her husband. You quickly learn she is obviously unhinged and not well in the head.

Angela secretly wants her daughter and the baby to stay with her because she is lonely and does not want to be alone. She loves Eli so much and wants to be helpful and needed in her life. But a mothers love can sometimes be suffocating.

The twist ending in this story killed it and was amazing. I sort of did pick up on it and had my guess but not until the end. I gave this story four stars because the beginning and ending were amazing but I found the middle being a little dragged out for my taste. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

When a mysterious note arrives for seven months pregnant nurse Eliana Hughes, she begins to doubt every aspect of her life – from her mixed feelings about motherhood to her marriage to Martin, who has become distant in recent months. As the person behind the note escalates their campaign to out Eli’s husband as a cheat, she finds herself unable to trust even her own instincts, and as pressure builds, she makes a mistake that jeopardises her entire future. Elsewhere, someone is watching. Someone who desperately wants a baby to call their own and will go to any lengths to become a mother – and stay a mother.

I seem to be having a run of strong, exhilarating thrillers and this is up there with being one of my favourite recent thrillers. We start following Eli, learning about her life with Martin and the struggle with her pregnancy. Then the notes appear and we see Eli slowly question everything in her life, as the book progresses Eli's struggle increases as the mysterious person's desperation for a baby grows. The plot for this book is breathtaking, stomach churning and incredibly thrilling. I was so absorbed in this book, I am not going to lie, at times this is very uncomfortable to read, but I was gripped by the sheer horror that was unfolding and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what Eli would have to face next. 

Allan has written an incredibly exciting, intense read and I loved the plot. About halfway through it became clear to me where the plot was going, usually when this happens I am wishing the author would throw in a twist to throw me off the scent. However with this read I was not wishing for that, instead the direction I could see Allan going was so shocking and so intoxicating that I was happy to see the horrors unveil as Eli faces the truth about her situation.

For me, a plot is only as good as the characters telling it so it is lucky that I adored Allan's creations. They are not perfect but that is fine because they are human and it is human characters I can get on board with more. Eli is a fascinating character, I was incredibly irritated by her but as the book progressed I grew to like her and took her into my heart.
