This is a thoroughly thought-provoking read. Fortunately Raghuram Rajan has a very clear writing style and, as a result, can take lay readers as well as academics along with him as he presents his "Three pillars" arguments. The three pillars are State, the markets and community. He argues that all three finding the appropriate balance is essential for the world to continue to evolve peacefully, whilst maximising the wellbeing and happiness of its citizens. Rajan explains in this book how, over the last 500 years, each pillar has come under pressure yet none has crumbled. Currently it is "community" that is under threat as wealth becomes centralised in the hands of the few. Communities feel disconnected from the State and voters are losing faith in democracy. Rajan provides the reader with both arguments and perspective that the pillars will come back into balance and society will successfully evolve. How we can rebuild communities, re-educate people and businesses so they can live with technological revolution that surrounds them demands your concentration. But, stick with it. By the end of his book you may emerge, as Rajan does, optimistic that the world really will provide different, but perhaps more inclusive communities for our children.
