Unreliable narrator, a mystery that needs solving by memories being put back together. Extremely vivid depictions of domestic violence which I didn’t expect to be so horrific!! Very readable and addictive but also predictable in several ways.

Lexi herself isn’t that likeable and Jules was such a horrid bully! There were lots of uncomfortable things about this book but that’s mainly because it covers several difficult topics.

Such a good read that kept me on my toes from beginning to end. Skillfully plotted and weaving in themes of coercive control, domestic abuse, peer pressure, bullying and more. A great and believable (if you get my drift) unreliable narrator.
I loved the way the narrative unfolded with flashbacks to significant past events in the distant past and in the near past. It served to build the intrigue and made me turn the pages faster. Read in one sitting.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.

After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.

I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.

I really liked the writing style of the book however I didn't like the plot, the characters and found that the element of magic in the book was weird and didn't fit in with the book.

This book reminded me of Try Not to Breath by Holly Seddon. It's an okay thriller, I liked this book but I didn't love it.

Hmmm... this was a bit of an up and down read for me. Lexi wakes up in a hospital, unsure how she got there. We discover that she and her mother are victims of domestic abuse, and have escaped to America for a new life. Through flashbacks, we learn of the horrific life they endured, whilst Lexi also remembers the new life she has built in order to make sense of her current situation. What happened to her? Where is her mother? The domestic abuse scenes were incredibly realistic and well written, but the narrative didn't flow for me, and I found it hard to sympathise with any of the characters. I never really got into the book so I found it a real struggle to read.

*I received a ebook copy of this novel for free through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Rating: 3/5.

Lexi has been involved in an accident, only she can’t remember what happened, but she knows she’s not out of danger yet. As her memories begin to come back, can Lexi truly trust them?

I struggled to get into this novel, the plot was complex which I liked, it was a hard read at times with domestic violence being a key theme, one which I felt was thoughtfully covered. Something just didn’t click for me, it was well laid out, had an interesting plot and characters but some parts felt unrealistic to me. One feud in particular felt too unbelievable to me, however this novel definitely shows potential.

Although right from the start I felt empathetic towards her, it took a while for Lexi to grow on me. She frustrated me a lot, some of the things she did felt to naïve to me, however her emotions felt real, her constant sense of fear was heartbreaking. I have read a lot of novels recently that have had challenging topics but I think those topics are so important, I do think this novel has the power to help raise awareness of domestic abuse.

Overall this was an OK novel, I liked the concept but I feel it could have been better developed. I would recommend this for fans of young adult, thriller/mystery novels.

This was completely enthralling from the first page. The secrets, the loss of memory, the things that Lexi won't write because she's so worried about being found by Charlie? All of these added up to a great mystery.

As the story unfolded, it grew darker. The pressure on her to go along with the bullying because she's so scared of Charlie finding them and hurting her and her mum. It makes it different from the typical bullying story, because if Lexi doesn't do what Finn's girlfriend says then a video of her will be posted on the internet and Charlie will know where to find her.

I did have to wonder about some of the things Lexi did though. I mean she stood outside the school completely naked? And no teachers came out to tell her off? It seems pretty unlikely that no teachers saw her or at least heard the buzz from the other students and came out to find out what was going on.

Still, it was a really great plot and I loved the ending.

I enjoyed the writing and pace in this book. It was a difficult subject matter. It was realistic mostly, but I cannot say it was perfectly executed. There were some unbelievable parts. The end was a twist. But, it just is missing that wow factor.
Thanks a lot to NetGalley and the publsiher for granting this complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

I normally feel like books with accidents surrounding memory loss are either hit or miss. This one was a hit for me. I genuinely could not see what was going to happen and there were elements of this that weren't clear if it was in Lexi's head or if it was actually happening. The combining of the plot surrounding the bullying and Lexi's stepfather was done very well. One element I did find confusing was when Lexi started referring to her mum as mom and it was only in the next page the reason why became clear. It's an interesting read that delivered a good twist that i did not see coming.

Our first encounter with Lexi seems to be a memory of her experiencing domestic abuse at the hands of her stepfather. There seems to be no doubt that something very unpleasant is going on. Then we learn Lexi is in hospital.
We don’t know what’s happening, but Lexi is visited by her aunt Gillian and her friend Crystal. Each is urging her to remember, but she can’t tell what they want her to remember.
All Lexi can think of is her mother and Finn. Neither visits her, and she doesn’t understand why.
Through a mix of memories we learn more about Lexi, some of the events that have happened to her and - eventually - how she came to be where she is.
This was a quick read, and it could certainly raise awareness of a number of issues, but so much of it seemed unbelievable and I find it hard to believe someone of Lexi’s age wouldn’t have more of an awareness of these issues before acting.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for my review.

Challenging & disturbing themes are skilfully woven through this twisty thriller that makes the reader feel as disorientated as the protagonist at times. Suspension of disbelief is occasionally required but overall it's a gripping read with great teen appeal.

Completely compelling reading. Alexia and her mum flee their abusive husband and father for a new life, changing their identity. However, on her first day at school, Alexia meets Finn, whose girlfriend, Jules, is vengeful and downright psychotic, planning to humiliate them both. Unwittingly, she lets Charlie know where they are, and later tries to kill them both. The story is told through Alexia's fragmented memory, as she recovers in hospital.
As a domestic violence survivir myself, I could feel the panic and fear in both Alexia and her mum throughout. There is, through the writing, a palpable atmosphere of fear, dread, and anticipation that he will find them. Alexia's fear that Jules will post photos to the internet, and she will be found, feels like a real possibility. A terrifying read.

Lexi wakes up in a hospital bed after a trauma she cannot recall. A friend and her aunt start to visit to help her. But Lexi wants her boyfriend and her Mum. Yet no one will tell her what is happening. Lexi starts to piece together her memories, first from quite some time ago, moving slowly forwards to trying to grasp what had happened to put her into this state.
Julie brings in memory pills to help Lexi recall events which soon inform the reader of a domestic violence situation and an escape from Charlie - her Mum's boyfriend.
Much of this book is well written and well paced, with the fear in the household realistically built up. The escape was well planned and Lexi's new life began. The appearance of Finn and the instant attraction of the pair, coupled with making an instant enemy of Finn's current girlfriend should have been a believable scenario, but was a bit clumsy. The big reveal was fast paced, but again slightly bizarre. However the ending was well resolved and the detail unexpected. Some good issues tackled, but it missed a striking impact.

You Can't Hide is a bit of a mish mash, utterly readable, fast paced and twisted.

The central theme is that of domestic violence- the kind that is seemingly inescapable. With a hidden plan, pulled off, one girl and her mother escape- but have to stay hidden. However an unsettling series of events leads to tragedy...

The story is told from the point of view of Lexi, from her hospital bed, where her memory is fractured and her ability to recognise people is erratic. Also told in flashback as memories return, there are lots of twists and turns.

I thought the domestic violence theme was really well done - the terror both during and after, the harsh truth that getting out doesn't necessarily mean safety, the author captures that perfectly.

However I found Lexi to be most terribly irritating which did take away from some of the drama unfolding for this reader.

Her actions were not terribly believable when it came to her insta love and her school life - however that was interspersed with more realistic issues she had on trust and anxiety.

Like I say a bit of a mish mash, overall very good with a few annoyances that subjectively speaking brought it down a notch.

Recommended if you adore a good unreliable narrator.
