I've read quite a few C.L Taylor books now so I was delighted to hear I had been pre-approved to read Sleep. This is another brilliant book by C.L. Taylor. I love a whodunit and there's something about strangers stranded in a remote place, cut off from the world with a murderer among them that captivates me. Sleep was an enjoyable read, full of suspense and kept me guessing.

Thank you to Harper Collins and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

Enjoyed this book very much, loved the way the characters in the hotel were portrayed. A good ending too and some excellent' turn pagers' throughout the book.

Sleep by C.L. Taylor was an answer to my prayers as I’ve been trying to find and read more locked-in type novels with a promise of lots and lots of possible suspects. If this isn’t one that fits the description then I don’t know what is! I’m such a fan of these settings where there’s no escape and the person forming a threat is right there.. it gives me a thrill to try and work out who it is.

I don’t know why but at first I thought that sleep itself might be a dangerous thing for Anna but, luckily for me, the novel doesn’t take this disturbing route but even if it’s not spooky scary, the novel can still keep you up and give you a sleepless night in the end ;-).

Anna’s reasons for finding it hard to get to sleep are quite different from mine though. She was involved in an accident where some people lost their lives and she feels terribly guilty even though it wasn’t her fault. Unfortunately, someone else feels she is exactly the one to blame. The motive was quite straightforward but the one with ill feelings was not easy to spot. This mysterious person starts taunting her, asking her how she can sleep. In an effort to leave it all behind her she takes a job in the only hotel on the Scottish island called Rum but it will soon turn out that the taunts haven’t stopped and even increase in intensity. Someone’s followed her and is looking to make her pay.

I very much enjoyed trying to figure out who was behind all of it. The author managed to surprise me halfway through the novel with a great twist and threw in some red herrings towards the end as well so that nobody escapes from being a suspect. At a certain time I thought I’d picked up on a tiny clue and I was getting more excited when there was a reference later again but alas, she still managed to wrongfoot me. It was only right at the end that I was certain I had put my money (figuratively!) on the right person. Yay me!

The novel is similar to An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena so I can recommend this novel if you enjoyed reading the former and can’t get enough of it! Sleep.. or don’t sleep if it’s as gripping to you as it was to me!

Another claustrophobic thriller from the writer of The Fear. Following a devastating accident resulting in the death of two of her colleagues and life changing injuries for a third, Anna is riddled with guilt. It's affecting everything from her job to her relationship and especially her sleep. She decides to remove herself far from the dreaded memories and start a new life on the isolated island of Rum. However, within just a few days of starting work at the Bay View Hotel, another person is dead, suspicion is everywhere and with a storm raging outside, Anna's paranoia reaches new levels. This really put me in mind of a modern day Agatha Christie. The suspects are all holed up together, unable to leave or contact the outside world. In the meantime, one person is dead, others are injured and our protagonist appears to be in mortal danger - but from which guest? Each one has a past that makes them a potential suspect and it's touch and go as to whether Anna and the other guests can outlast both the storm and the killer. A recommend thriller with a clever twist.

An enjoyable read which kept you guessing to the end. Not exactly a brilliant recommendation for travelling to Rum! The characters were well drawn and made you feel involved in the story.

I have read a few C.L. Taylor books in the past and enjoy her storytelling and building of suspense. 'Sleep' was no different. The novel opens with a letter written by Anna the narrator, stating that if you are reading this, she is dead. This immediately hooks the reader, posing unanswered questions that urge them to find out why. The novel that flashes back to three months ago, where Anna was in a tragic car accident with 3 of her work colleagues. Blaming herself, she struggles to put the event behind her and develops insomnia. She then starts to receive unusual messages relating to sleep and believes someone is following her. Unable to cope with the anxiety plus the claustrophobic pressures of her London life, she applies for a job in the remote Scottish isle of Rum in the hope of escaping the nightmares and having a fresh start
2 weeks into her new job working at The Bay Hotel, a group of guests are greeted by a raging storm which shows no signs of leaving. Forced together in the tiny hotel, tensions soon rise and Anna begins to realise that someone is not who they say they are. Someone knows what happened to Anna. Someone wants her to sleep. Permanently.

I have to say, I raced through this thriller. I was kept on my toes the whole way and was caught off guard when the 'stalker' was revealed. There were a lot of cleverly placed red herrings and that kept the mystery alive. I particularly enjoyed the setting - a remote island cut off from the outside world with no wi-fi or phone signal due to stormy weather. I imagine that is not unusual for Scotland, even in the summer. Each character had an interesting arch and a background that suggested they could be the stalker. It was well researched and put together,

My main critique is the writing style. I thought the plot was great and the characters were well-integrated into the story with sideline stories to avert the readers attention away from the main story. However, I just wasn't a huge fan of the language in parts, the way people spoke to each other (the use of the term 'mate' with Steve and Mo got on my nerves for example because I felt it wouldn't be used in real life). Some parts I just thought could have been edited slightly to reflect people's ages. Other than that small criticism, I enjoyed the book and would recommend.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a brilliant book and an oxymoron of a title because I couldn’t sleep during the reading of this book. Cally’s writing is so brilliant that I ended up not trusting anyone – even wondering if it was me wot dun it! The ending as well, means the story has not necessarily ended, even though it does draw to a close. Highly recommended.

This book was certainly a page turner. It was really intense. It made me try to guess the story the whole time.
Taylor is an expert keeping the tension high, that's why I liked reading this a lot. It delivered a true thriller.

If you like really dark, psychological thrillers that will keep you at the edge of your seat, this is for you.
Thank you to Netgalley, and publisher for this ARC in return for an honest review.

"All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty…

To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare.

Each of the guests have a secret but one of them is lying – about who they are and why they’re on the island. There’s a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they’ve set their sights on Anna.

Seven strangers. Seven secrets. One deadly lie.

Someone’s going to sleep and never wake up…"

As always C.L Taylor does it again with another incredibly cleverly written plot. The characters are well developed and completely believable, to the point you have no idea of any of there intentions. There is a plot twist and oh my what a twist! i had absolutely no idea and i was kept guessing the whole way through!! I read this book in two sittings as i just couldn't put it down (only when it was time to do a night feed!)

I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who loves crime, mystery or thrillers. Worthy 5 star review!

A quick, easy read with enough suspense to keep me interested until the end but if I’m honest I wasn’t blown away. At times, the book was reminiscent of an Agatha Christie type whodunnit. A group of strangers marooned by a storm. A young woman seemingly being stalked, strange happenings, a natural death - or was it?
It’s a decent read but nothing special for me.
My thanks to Netgalley for this copy.

This is a psychological thriller by one of my favourite authors. I love her writing style and I was fairly confident I was going to like it and I was not disappointed. The story is about Anna, she goes on a work team building weekend and there is an accident that changes her life forever. Convinced that she is being stalked she finishes her relationship with her boyfriend and packs up to take up a job in the remote Scottish island of Rum. She soon discovers that she doesn’t feel safe there.

This really put me in mind of an Agatha Christie novel. You know that the villain is there but as each person has their own secrets you are never quite sure who to trust. I would highly recommend this book.

What would deprive you of sleep? In Anna’s case it was guilt. Her involvement in a car accident in which two co-workers were killed and one paralysed, even though it wasn’t her fault, leaves her afraid of sleeping. When she does, she has night terrors and wakes screaming. She feels someone is stalking her and continues to feel like then after she moves to a remote Scottish island.

The author has always, to my mind, been good at creating tension, paranoia and fear. I have my eye on a suspect time and again only to be proved wrong. I really enjoyed this book and the snapshot of the lives of those staying on the island with Anna.

A very well written psychological thriller which keeps you hooked till the very end. I loved the way it explored the dark side of guilt - it certainly makes you think. The characters have a genuine feel to them and you can empathise with their experiences and how they shape who they are. The secluded setting and mix of characters, all who have their own issues, sets up a great who-done-it feel to the story. Is there a stalker, is someone trying to frighten you, or are they trying to kill you...!?! Why do they want you sleep...!?!

Absolutely enthralling! Made me gasp out load in places and to me, this is sign of a good book.
A terrible turn of events plagues an already vulnerable lead character and leads to a journey with more than a few bumps in the road. A few red herrings from the author makes the reader continually wonder about what is coming next. Will your predictions come true or have you taken the wrong fork in the road? On more than a few occasions, something came out of left field and urged me to read on.
I would definitely recommend this book, if you like twists and turns and whodunnits....

This is one that starts sort of slow, but when it picks up, it doesn't let up until the end. It's intense, chilling, and very twisted head. I highly recommend to those who love a good thrill and chill. Will be using in a daily challenge as well as highly recommeing in Chapter Chatter Pub.

I found this a quick read that although written with a distinct lack of humour was almost comical in the escalating catastrophes.
At its core are the morals that everyone is damaged and snap judgments are usually exactly that however the very last page was unnecessarily cruel.

Guilt ridden Anna escapes to the Isle of Rum for some solitude following an accident. She gets a job working in a remote hotel. As the weather turns and she, along with her guests, becomes cut off from the rest of the island, she realises one of the guests wants her dead... but which one? A great whodunnit and a real page turner, it keeps you guessing all the way through. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC.
